except, you know, you WANT to aim for 1 to 2 years at the most. the longer you take the more your interest wavers and more often than not projects get dropped because they take too fucking long. breeding season was a pretty big drop and i figured people would have learned from that. if you take longer than 2 years then you've got a huge issue with time management and productivity. Imagine a bar of 0 to 100% with 100% being the absolute best. If you can get to 100% and release it within a year, two at the most, then you've done the best you can on the project. If you take 3+ years to release the same product then it can still be just as good as the one that took 2 years or less but since it took so long it adds an opinion of "this really shouldn't have taken as long as it did" and kind of devalues it.

I mean, look at kyrieru for gods sake. He still does great sprite work and sprite animations but he took way too fucking long to make his noaika game and its still not done. He explicitly stated when he released his last game "if i can make x amount of money i can easily pump out another game within a year and sell that and continue the process." Lo and behold he wasted his year of productivity and ran out of money and now hes strapped for both cash and time and suddenly a game that was supposed to take a year is still being developed like 3 years later. It's probably gonna be great but it also has been in development for almost 3 years now and still going because the guy failed to work on it in a timely manner and got constantly side tracked with doing practices that would have literally no effect on the game and opening a patreon to do animations of other things and work on other projects. When you take too long to do one project you just waste time doing other shit that hardly matters and ultimately doom yourself from ever finishing.

I think time management is the factor. I've seen good artist make quality artwork within an hour but they don't manage to put it in day after day.

I think alot of these games with devs that go over a year are lazy or managing extremely poorly. They are either milking them patreon dollars or just can't put in a sincere effort. Although project planning is a point as well, although I would count that as part of effort.

Another thing is loss of interest. I think if you exceed a year on a project then you're going to get bored or frustrated, mostly because you're a lazy shit. At that point I think devs just crawl to finish or just slapping a done sticker on it.

Yeah, a project like a VN like this needs to be done around a year.

Well, what do you need? You need art, programming, and audio. At least at the most basic effort it's those things.

I suppose it's about skill levels. If you're doing something very technical, like making 3d movies, then doing something in a training wheels IDE is no sweat. If you only turn out things in Photoshop for commission money then that is a step up in difficulty.

Of course this whole discussion leaves people open to the "why don't you do it" argument.

To be fair, something like a VN doesn't require programming skills and most audio can be put together from CC sources

In general, if you can do the art, you can make an indie game, because the amount of time you have to spend on familiarizing yourself with some kind of engine like Game Maker or RenPy is negligible in comparison to the time you have to spend on doing backgrounds, portraits, etc.

About a year. Since the movie he's been tinkering with Cycles which he's been trying to get the matte cell shaded look. Overall it's been a step up in render time.
