As someone who self-taught via a similar method, I can give you some hints on the next step: take that art you're copying and start looking at it as a series of shapes. Instead of focusing on the final lines as the artist left them, think about how you might break down the art into a series of simple shapes.

Say you're looking at a piece whose focus is... the anatomy. Draw the spine as a simple line, draw the torso as a simple wedge shape, add the pelvis. Use simple circles to designate limb joints, and a sphere for the head. Now you've got a basic anatomical figure; do this enough time, and with enough references, and you'll start to get a habit of how to construct the human form. From there, it's just a matter of adding more definition to... certain areas.

When drawing, I recommend sketching out the figure in basic shapes first, THEN look up any references you need. Doing this should help you get an idea of how to illustrate your character without your image looking like it was a complete copy of the reference. It'll help you get an idea of what to fill in the blanks from whatever angle you drew your character.

Or, if a specific pose is too hard for you to draw, you could try tracing a different reference picture by breaking it down into shapes and lines. Then attempt to construct your character in a similar fashion. The picture might not be the best example though.

You could always check out /ic/'s sticky for better information/tutorials, good stuff in there.
