Now, I like me some anime here and there. This isn't an anime hate thread. I enjoy anime in moderation. It can be good sometimes. Thank god RWBY isn't technically an anime, because if it was actually made in Japan then it would be a disgrace to the country. That stupid, god-forsaken "show" is the most horrible thing to ever exist, and it's the reason that some things should just be left to the people who know what they're doing. It's animated poorly, the voice acting is terrible, they use EVERY cliche in the book and it's just shoddily done. Basically it's a fanfiction for something that previously did not exist. Picture a group of non-Japanese, western high schoolers who had heard about what anime is, never watched it themselves, and then made what they thought was one. That's RWBY. Or they've only seen one anime and think that everything must be like that. I don't even know. How can anyone think this half-assed "show" is even remotely acceptable? There are a metric fuckton of well-written, properly voiced and actually real anime out there available to watch for free, yet people subject themselves to this bullshit...? It baffles me. Like, the only way I can describe RWBY is "stop being a fucking weeb and watch a real anime." It actually makes sense in some weird, twisted way. I needed to vent. I normally don't vent here, but dammit, I needed to. RWBY is horrible.

I feel like this would apply to volume 1&2 in volume 3 the voice acting has come along in strides, it's not amazing but feel like its mediocre at worst and good at best.

The animation in volume 3 is pretty good but I feel that is because vol 3 focuses a lot more on fights which is where Rwby shines the most.


The lighting and camera work is a plus only because it was nonexistent in volumes 1&2.

As for writing it does in fact need work but for a show that only costs my time I find the enjoyment from rwby is how it evolves as a project, to see RT learns from its missteps and improves or if they wallow in its own mediocrity

See, I don't like the comparison with like, the visuals, because especially knowing the way the show is made, the fact that they use the exact same animations which are framed the same doesn't seem like a great deep and mysterious "pottery". Qrow trained Ruby, so naturally how they look when they fight should be similar, which in this case using the Tao of Monty, would be to reuse the animations.

I think the comparison is intentional too, though it looks super similar because of their methodology. The question is if this is a show that's got a message like "blood isn't everything" buried in it somewhere, which it easily could. Alternatively, how much did Monty, Miles, Kerry and now Gray like Metal Gear Solid? Meme, Gene, Scene. Are similarities between characters all genetic, or could they simply be informatic? Or are they a product of the same time and environment?

Yeah, according to Jeff Williams, Monty didn't even plan on it being Ruby's mother's grave when he made the Red Trailer, Jeff had to give him the idea. Then there's the whole Jaune's crush on Weiss was ad libbed thing, giving us the dance arc because Monty wanted dance scenes. First season was supposed to be two Volumes that were only a few weeks apart, with the Volume 3 stuff we got supposed to be the Volume 2 ending.

It genuinely feels like they don't now what they are doing and have to extend things, cram stuff in, drop things, and push stuff back because they simply can't make it work with the production ability they have. And that's just for the plot points, God only knows how badly that messes up attempts at thematic elements.

Like for the blood isn't everything thing runs into half of the main team of characters being trained to fight like their direct family, Yang like Taiyang by Taiyang and Weiss like every other Schnee. Possibly as much as three if you count Qrow for Ruby, biological or not. Blake only manages to escape that by not having any family at all.

All we seem to have going for a theme at the moment is "muh creativity and muh individuality" thing with the color names and all the heroes being special snowflakes while the Grimm, White Fang thugs, and the ineffectual Atlas soldiers and robots being all very similar and anonymous.

I just can't see any reason for Tai and Qrow to just raise Ruby and Yang based on a lie. Qrow was clearly around enough that if he was her real dad he shouldn't have to lie about it, and Summer cheated on Taiyang when it's said they were pretty much a married couple.
There just doesn't seem to be any reasoning for it that's not convoluted as fuck.

The latter isn't really a retcon so much as presenting it differently later on than how it looked at the time. Which I guess you could reasonably call that a retcon, but it's not that much.

That's pretty much given. They never intended for the show to blow up so much, as it was just an excuse for Monty to make anime grills fight.
Now that the scope has inflated so much and we've arrived to a clear junction, I hope that things get smoother. The writers aren't constrained by the shortcomings of the previous volumes, have some experience about how things will play out and have a chance to plan things out better.
