I wouldn't say most people have. If you're going by the poll that was taken, the irc was most popular. Also I would say neither the irc nor the chatstep are neutral, there are a few who feel strongly on both sides from what I can tell. If it were up to me I'd just say to move to the discord and fully abandon the other two, but as I said it can't be discussed due to people being afraid of it starting shit (which, to be fair, it definitely can.)

from what I've seen, the chatstep might have higher peaks but the irc has more people consistently in it and at more times of day. there are times I've seen the chatstep fully abandoned, whereas I've only seen the irc come close to that once or twice.
that being said, my point was less about which of those two to to use and more that what you said was somewhat inaccurate, and also that as I said it's near-impossible to have a discussion about it. I just think it's silly to have multiple chats, hence why I mentioned the discord as a neutral alternative that would keep people from getting upset over it.

the thing is is that both are comfy and drama-free 99% of the time. the only time anything really gets heated is whenever this discussion happens, because as i said there are a small number of people on both sides who are very attached to one or the other for whatever reason. the way i see it is that most already frequent both and it's just those few who insist on one or the other, so the only way to compromise on them and have everybody in one rather than arbitrarily split up for no good reason would be to use neither, completely eliminating the biases involved in the situation.
