To begin with that's some huge bull crap. Let me tell you a fun fact, as someone who "left" when /sanc/ was leaked, it wasn't because of /sanc/ being a thing.
The day /sanc/ was leaked made me realize how people truly felt about the current situation of these threads and how worse it was than I thought.
If /sanc/ didn't happen, I wouldn't have get this wake up call, and even though I would have finished them one day, the leak of /sanc/ motivated me even more to work on Rigginsmania for two reasons:
- Give something to people to look forward to and proves that these games matter.
- Never let anyone take these games back to an aidschan board ever again.
It really isn't that complicated: Games are the fuel of these threads, the day everyone stop hosting is the day HG loses its identity, and it's a process that's currently happening because of how HG is evolving over time.
Which is when you think about it a travesty because of how fucking easy it is to host nowadays compared to one year ago and yet very few people are giving it a shot.

HG is a hit or miss thing.
It can be the greatest thing just like it can be the worst thing, and this all varies depending into your definition of "fun".
Because the truth is that there's not a written way on how you "should" have fun in HG.
And because of that, it makes for these arguments that goes from "my fun > yours" to "that kind of people are toxic they should leave".
And that's something that people should rather accept other than trying to turn HG into what they want it to be.
People are frustrated with these threads because "they aren't what they used to be" and instead of trying to make the best of what we have they whine about the past.
If you take HG for what it is, it can be the most fun thing you'll find if you man up instead of letting random anonposts annoy you.
And these anonposts, while we're at it, are the result of the atmosphere these threads are.
People find the way to vent by shitposting, and they do that because the games aren't here to give them an alternate choice. It's a vicious cycle.
The games are basically what keeps people from turning into rabid animals.

Actually, I do share that same fascination. I just want to say though that I really think HG may seem different from the past than now is not because of the games, but because of the people.

People have gotten recognized, and are their own person. People do have their likes and dislikes. I think you're missing a little bit of the point, as people do here have set personalities of course, but it's hard to make them "stand-out" in a way.
I can't speak for too much of the oldfags, but a couple of people that stand out to make themselves unique from the crowd would be Adachi, Seth, Kamina, and Hoshi. They're popular for all different kind of reasons, can really hype people up over the most random of shit (Seth randomly coming back after we all thought he was gone for various reasons, Kamina cucking himself, and Adachi hosting over people).
Nobody in their right mind would do that, right? But they do it anyways, just because of their entertainment value.

I completely understand your point, and as a Smash guy too I can tell you the only times I get interested in the competitive scene is because of Leffen and his bantz. I saw the documentary about the 7 players of Smash very long ago, and it's with guys like them that the Smash community gained in importance, because of their personalities and their genuine passion.
The thing I try to do with my games is have events that can build the characters that get them, scenarios that are both entertaining and expand their personalities while being able to interpret them freely with their avatars.
One of the thing is that practically happen with every things ever, is that since people get to know each others better, well as paradoxical as it sounds it may also be one of the reasons why people "get shy" and don't dare to post as freely as they used to do when they debuted.
Because really, when you're a newfag you got nothing to lose. You make some posts here and there but at the end of the day you don't go with the mindset "Fuck I might not post that one it could make it lose my rep / make others lose respect in me".
And I think socialization aspect, while creating some of the best friendships there is, was also double-edged and now people are a bit more afraid to completely let themselves out.
