How many weapon modes are too many? I was looking at some original weapons and they all have like, seventeen modes which are mostly just gun versions. How many modes would your oc rwby weapon have you faggots?

Honestly at most two. The old standby of the more complicated a device is, the more potential it can break when you need it most. For me it'd be a range mode and a melee mode and that's it. If I need to mix things up, I'd just switch out dust rounds.

Prolly for me would be a combo VEPR-12 with an underslung "dust thrower" for up close and personal killing. Freeze, fire dust would be obvious standbys, but I'm sure I would be able to figure out a dust concoction to spray acid or something.

I don't know, like 5? Being an effective dust caster can change a lot and it's also heavily dictated by your physique and semblance. There's also the factor of the typical environment they wish to choose jobs for. Rubes or Nora are gonna have a harder time going door to door to clean out small nests of those turkey sized grimm birds compared to Jaune or Yang.

In general everyone needs some form of melee option, projectile option and wildly benefit from any additional functions that shield, bind, grant mobility, long range, area of effect, supplemental firepower during primary reload from an underbarrel, synergize with your semblance. Other weapon factors are hard to make a call on cause it's not like everything is statted out for material hardness, how much encumbrance hunters pack, grimm durability and health nor are we aware of all the grimm types so it's not like someone would have a collapsible crowbill/nodachi made of of orihalcum for large and heavily armored shit without as much stamina drain on weaker shit or encumbrance in tight quarters. There's also issues like caliber size, cost, effectiveness and a bunch of other shit. Then there's just issues with your type of weapon like how nora's grenades help compensate for the drawbacks of fighting with a hammer. And hell, it's not like we see jams or misfires.

It's a lot to pack into a weapon but Monty's clearly decided that they aren't gonna get gadget happy.
