The IRC is alright, there's some nice folks there. There is a lot of RP thread influence in there, so you may not like it as much if you aren't a huge rp-er. The chatstep room is usually quieter, but has more general chats about fats and the sort. Even the discord room is also good if you're looking for some chats.
When it comes down to it, it's mostly just personal preference as to which chat you use the most. Though I guess nothing is stopping you from using all three, if you really want to.

From myself being fat, no. Also I guess I'm like a little under 400 pounds, high 300s. I wouldn't call that massively obese in retrospect, I don't need a mobility scooter or anything, but it affects me noticeably for the worse.

If I could get a genie or some shit to give me the ideal body, I'd be like to 200-300 pounds and bearmode. Big enough to have some presence without it affecting my health drastically. But, y'know, I don't like exercise, I like the internet, and I REALLY like food, so I've sort of given up and resigned myself at this point, though I'd like to avoid getting any bigger.
