Anon, that's been me since the very start of these threads. I've got so many ideas that I've just been sitting on because reading other people's work is easier. I finally found a concept that I just had to work on. Savage might have more Judy to him than Nick; a Nick-flavoured Judy perhaps. Whereas she's pretty competent in the technicals and abstract of her craft, her small social know-how and practicality are undercut by her massive inexperience, naivety and ideals that she tries so hard to live up to (to varying success).

I can see that the Jame Bond image of a hypercompetent international superspy is something Savage had in his mind when going into espionage, but found it's not nearly as glamorous and exciting as he thought it would be. Still, he tries to act the part despite not being too charming or suave; he's still earnest about the job itself and utterly enamoured with the platonic ideal of the superspy, but his overachieving ethic in this regard far outstrips his experience and skill level: a job to wiretap some camelid oil sheikh spirals into a firefight through the sultan's palace, rescuing damsels out of the harem after he unearths a conspiracy to start a resource war. He's a less cowardly, less cynical spy-version of Ciaphas Cain who's not incompetent but extreme dumb luck ends up tipping the scales in situations that he should by his current level he should fail in.

I've never quite like Savage, because just about all suggested incarnations of him came across to me as a threat to Nick's unique partnership and bond with Judy. A scenario where the apparent hostility slowly crumbles to a sense of mutual respect however, is something much more palatable. They see a little bit of themselves in each other, perhaps.

Or perhaps, Savage does turn out to be an inversion of his superspy trope, as suggested. The cock of the walk when he's first introduced, all suave and impressive enough to draw in Judy's interest, and as a result, Nick's jealousy... But alongside that jealous, suspicion. Where most people around Savage are buying into his charming personality that demands respect, an experienced conman like Nick is picking up on subtle clues that this bunny's hiding something. He can't quite put his finger on it, and he certainly can't convince anyone else to give his suspicions any credit. Hell, maybe it goes on for long enough, that Nick eventually begins to question himself; Is Savage really as weak and vulnerable as he believes the bunny to be, or has he led himself to believe so, because of his envy over how Judy seems to be falling for this guy?

Nevertheless, circumstances do eventually lead to a reveal, where Savage admits to Nick about his insecurities, and Nick in turn, must own up that he's been viewing and treating the bunny unfairly, even if his suspicions had merit. In a sense, it mirrors how he and Judy eventually came to terms with each other.
