Honestly, a lot of us "called it" when it first happened. Shane was Monty's guy, and was known for just throwing shit into the animation last minute without telling the writing staff. I and other people said he was probably let go because he pushed for more of Monty's old fast-and-loose style.

Which is great when you have a Monty Oum around to spearhead that shit and make miracles, but without one I can easily see RT trying to put things in very manageable styles.

Also, I get the feeling that him and Monty's idea of foreshadowing is "have people do fighting before it has a chance to come up in the narrative otherwise".

Is RT trying to gloss this over with 'deals' and 'sales'?

I've gotten a few emails since yesterday about everything over 50$ is free shipping, New RWBY gear and some info on the card game and RVB.

Agreed. The fact that shane even admits that they would do fights on the fly on their own without consulting others is just kind of ludicrous. I mean, ok RWBY is Monty's baby and vision, but doing something like actively hinders the work of the 30+ staffers you have working to make your dream a reality.

Honestly looking at this setup, if Monty hadn't passed away I could easily see Monty, Shane, and Sheena breaking away from RT and forming their own studio or something due to a creative breakdown and the show would probably have stalled at volume 3 or gotten delayed significantly while the RT team worked around rebuilding their system.

I mean, I think RT respected Monty enough, and knew well enough that he could pull his stuff off. They would have kept going and done some amazing things. And it still would have been "Monty Oum's thing", with ALL the positives and negatives that entails. And hell, if Monty had another idea or he wasn't able to work on RWBY the way he wanted, after another couple of years he probably would have been working with people in RT long enough to pass it on and keep it to his "vision" as much as now.

Without Monty, well, it's hard to blame RT for trying to shoulder a heavy burden by taking firm control of an IP. Of course they didn't bring in Sheena, she wasn't credited or paid by RT, some of Monty's team didn't even know they were married IIRC. Not to mention they already drew flak from the community for being insular with their VAs. Shane was Monty's right-hand guy, but he was all animation. He didn't have any credits and as far as I know any experience writing or directing.

I have plenty of sympathy for Shane and the rest about basically being cut out, but I can't really fault RT - they lost a major creative talent in an irreversible way and had a lot of pressure to continue one of their major IPs. You can't blame them for trying to fix that shit.

Pretty much nailed it. The whole death came out of left field for a lot of folks. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of mental/emotional chaos that caused both on RT and Shane in particular. You can tell the guy idolized Monty as a quasi-messiah brother. Losing him and on top of everything else....
