Today 'Alsie' (as she is somewhat disrespectfully known) is an older, jaded, tired dragon with basically no horde, no power, no tribute, and no influence. She subsists in a small cave hidden among the mountains, picking off grazing sheep for sustenance. The rumor is she can't even breathe fire anymore, but that's only among the rare few peasants who even seem to acknowledge her existence.

After all, a past-her-prime dragon doesn't seem to warrant much attention anymore.

Start using the eraser, alot.
Until you are confident in your lines you are going to be doing almost as much erasing as drawing.
Sometimes I'm literally "carving out" the desired lines from a mess of chicken scratch.
& when it's looks halfway decent get a fresh piece of paper & start fresh copying the good "lines".

I use a mechanical pencil, 0.5mm 2B. I prefer a metal or solid plastic grip because I draw so much that a rubber grip actually melts.

I also use a kneadable/putty eraser because you allows you to fade out your construction without damaging the paper.

My recommendation is the opposite though, that you should avoid the eraser. Fudging lines into place isn't going to make you any better at getting them right from the start, for that you'll need to find a process that allows you to make mistakes and constantly try to improve by taking what you learnt into your next drawing.

Avoid going over any line twice, that doesn't mean getting it perfect but rather that each line you put down states something new. Beginners have a real tendency to pet their lines, where they keep going over the same line making minute adjustments until it looks right. That doesn't help you find the right one, that just makes the existing line more vague and slows the entire process to a crawl. A lot of things are easier to fix once they have context and once you know where the lines should be, you can always use your kneadable eraser to knock it back or pop another piece of paper over it and clean it up.

If you're a complete beginner then drawing shapes, lines and doing life drawing is a good way to build up the basic motor skills you need.

don't get dollar store pencils, all I've got are brittle & off center & I spend more time sharpening them them drawing.

At the dollar store are sketchbooks that average 9x12 inches with 30 sheets for a buck, spiralbound>gluebound(sheets start falling out after a while).

Oh and to clarify, the reason why you want to avoid fixing lines unnecessarily is because the vast majority of the time it's not the line that's the problem, When you draw a line you are taking your knowledge of the proportions, the structure, the shape and indicating it. When you get it wrong, it's usually because that knowledge is lacking and fixing the line doesn't change that. You have to grab reference, do studies and try to understand the thing you got wrong. That's really what will help you draw it properly next time...

Oh and there's nothing wrong with doing a shitty drawing and leaving it that way. The time you would've spent polishing it up is usually better spent doing those studies you need and those studies are a hell of a lot more fun when you're not spending 90% of your time trying to fix it in spite of the fact that you lack the knowledge to do it correctly anyway. In a single hour I can burn through hundreds of shitty drawings and I'll usually learn tons from doing so.

I'm not a complete beginner, but I'm pretty untrained, so I may do something right and something wrong and not know why or how it happened...

I'll try to do more real life stuff, though. I realized I got into a niche early on when I'd practice doodling and end up only doing monsters or angry faces, but even those were just me re-drawing existing images to try and get used to drawing on a page...

Here's something I did, like, 2 years ago... I moved out of a roach infested home, so the entire notebook this came out of couldn't be saved. Thank god the only worthwhile picture didn't get too fucked up... I like this one, even though it's not great.

It only takes hours to draw something if you're either doing a complex scene, petting your lines or making excessive corrections. Make each line state something new and if you have some part that keeps looking wrong in all your attempts, get some reference and do some studies because you aren't magically going to get it right without actively figuring it out. Usually you have to be able to draw it well from reference before you can draw it well from imagination.

Oh and in regards to studying, you want to gather what ever reference would be most helpful, whether that's real-life, photos, books, artworks, videos etc.

Now that you're settling down to draw it, you want to focus on understanding the structure of it. Most of the studies I do take ten minutes each and are attempts at drawing what's in the reference, but approaching it in much the same way I would like to construct it from memory. That means you're not copying it perfectly, but rather analyzing it and trying to apply that to your own method of construction. Figure out the proportions first, break it down in a way you can easily remember then figure out the shapes that best represent the structure of it. Keep drawing them quickly and keep refining your approach, mix it with ones done without reference just to see if it works.

Well as a beginner you have to understand that your drawings are always going to be a bit fucked and that nothing about your process or situation is going to be even remotely ideal.

You only have three options, ignore the mistake and try not to draw too much attention to it, if it's minor you can just grab some reference and fill in the detail you missed, but if it's major then studies need to be done and there's no avoiding it.

If you could do perfect artwork by getting the right reference and just spending hours fixing mistakes then there would be no need to learn the craft and everyone would be shitting out masterworks. The reality of it is that to execute a good drawing of something you need to understand the structure of it and prior to you gaining that knowledge it's always going to look a bit shit.

Stop trying to prop up your ego by polishing the turd, you'll make a lot more progress if you embrace where you are with your work instead of trying to hide it. You can still finish an artwork with the mistakes intact and the sooner you move on from that piece, the sooner you can address those problems with studies and apply what you learnt to your next attempt.

How do you do a study right then? Probably doesn't help me much if I "study" something for an hour or two but nothing changed afterwards or things get even worse than before, which is a thing which happens to me rather often.

I put a variety of native animals from Yorkshire since they all signed up together, it was common to have entire villages of young men in a unit.

Thanks. It's a combination of using a mechanical pencil and a gum eraser. Mechanical pencils make very thin, easy to erase lines which are easy to clean up with a nice gum eraser, since they tend not to smear graphite everywhere like erasers attached to pencils. I find you can afford to mess up a bit more when you use these for sketches.

Thanks, I made portrait & gave him a backstory last night.
He's actually a blue Budgie(parakeet) so I guess that makes him an Australian.
He's part of the signal corp in charge of the messenger dragonflys.
In my anthro world it's the insects who are the beasts.
Giant beetles are draybeasts, I haven't quite decided on a good cavalry insect though.

I thought of suggesting hercules beetles, but they are more like walking tanks/siege weapons than cavalry.

That was what came to my mind first as well, ants are remarkably fleet and strong for their size & if the rider has something like a queens scent they would be easy to tame,

But I'm not completely sure if they would have the mass for a cavalry charge.

I get this idea that getting run through with a lance from a rider on a horse sized ant, though it will hurt, would have about as much force as if you were on a 10speed bike.

forgot the drawing, looking more into it ants would be perfect mount replacement for horses.
A sleek black ant for riding in town or pulling a hansom cab.
Rugged harvester ants for farm work. Burrowing for ditches and bunkers and with the proper gear I suppose a rider can climb near vertically or upside down.

Now I want to see that ant man movie.
