The author read a non-fiction book about the life of wild rabbits in England. How they live. How they interact. How they defend from prey. How they form dens and have a sort of society.

He wrote a fictionalized story about a den of rabbits coming under threat, so they have to go out into unknown territory and find a new place for a den. Something rabbits actually do. It's very high risk, lots of prey, lots of competition.

He made them just a bit anthropomorphic. In that he gave them names and vaguely human thoughts and a sort of rabbit mythology. Beyond that it's very much rabbit biology and rabbit behavior.

It's an amazing bit of literature. Avoid the cartoon, it's an abortion that gets everything wrong.
