I don't think so, since there are characters that do seem to have styled "hair" on their heads. Freddy, Bonworth, Nisha, Fran, and the Chicas all seem to have longer fur/feather's on top of their head to approximate human hair-dos.

I do wonder if most of them can even grow their fur out much past what we see. If not they'd probably find the fact that Mike can let his hair get really long if he doesn't regularly cut it even though much of the hair on his body remains rather short like a normal person.

I thought Mike being discovered as a human would be a major plot point. They kept foreshadowing it with Mike's constant slip of the tongue every fucking chapter. I liked the way it was handled with faz telling Mike that 'nobody must know' then burning the photos... But don't tease us like that if you're going to end it like that.

Going from babyraging about his teeny weeny to non-stop jumping of metaphorical grenades is kind of a huge amount of character progression.

He grew, just not that much or in any spectacular way. Mike's arc was about him no longer being an outsider. He starts off as a literal one in both the world and in the apartments. A lot of the early narrative has mike deriding his roommates in secret, and seeing himself as something better than them. In spite of being literally homeless he had gotten it in his head that he was here, at least in part, to help these people. That's why bonnibel's "Broken like the rest of us" and Bonworth's routine grated on him so much. It also explains why he went out of his way to help out as much. Basically he needed to realize that he's no different than anyone else. In fact after going through The Wreck he starts to realize that he could have it much worse than he does; he doesn't have cancer or crippling injury; he's just an asshole from another dimension.

In fact he starts to realize it in the moment where he leaves The Wreck that he's got some issues of his own to deal with. Chichi calling it a "down day" (similar to how he once regarded Bonnibel as a time-bomb) was pretty on-the-nose and a nice little hint at the later revelation that mike's as messed up as the rest of them.

He goes through The Standard, gets traumatized (again) at Jeremy Human's, and goes down the downward spiral that leads to his breakdown. Ironically it's the one the most beat-up ones that help him. April helps mike work out his grief and finally release his emotions, letting him move on. That's why he made a point to apologize to bonnibel later.

When he discovers the photos, he finds that he wasn't AS crazy as he thought, but it also presents the chance at clinging to some former identity. Mike could have taken the photos and tried to pursue his past, or discard them and accept who he is now. He accepts his new home, and gives up the past the the past Mike in favor of it.

Or something. This is a jumbled mess of thoughts pretending to be coherent.

I felt that for a while. As I got over it I would try to imagine where the story could go after chapter 51, and even after the melancholy passed, I found myself still fascinated with the premise I came up with; a story following a newly introduced human who ended up in the Roommates setting through similarly vague circumstances who dropped what little life he was able to make for himself to investigate the "hairless ape" mentioned in an online news article covering the Jeremy's Incident. He rolls with the initial assumption made by the various tenants that he's a relative of Mike's, and when he lets slip that he has nowhere to go, they insist on having him stay a while while he "gets back on his feet".
I feel like I could generate some interesting conflict with such a premise, by having the new human protag act as a foil to Mike, being noticeably less awkward than our old protagonist (maybe have an arc where Mike and Rackham start scheming together, sharing a growing jealousy of new guy's popularity with the ladies?) while being less earnest with the tenants than Mike, landing him in different emotional conflicts with the other tenants than Mike ever would, allowing different aspects of the characters to be explored.

Also make the new guy named something like "Mark" to poke fun at all the near-duplicate characters living together.

Aside from the fact that I'd be writing a fanfiction of a fanfiction, I'm uncertain if I can actually execute it in a non-cringy way that captivates readers even half as well as the original did.

Introducing a new interpretation of him follows the pattern, in addition to generating jealousy as his once-unique role is seemingly encroached upon.

Introducing the new human as a Jeremy analogue could work for sure, but it would alter the nature of the new protagonist in a drastic way. It would weaken the "Mike's Jealousy" arc by putting such a big barrier between him and the tenants in the beginning. I would like for the new protagonist to foil Mike's rocky start by making the new guy have a great first impression, which also would allow him to flirt with the ladies casually, spurring the complacent romantic in Mike back into action.

In short, it would have to be an almost entirely different narrative than what I have in mind.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily true, but I will admit that you make a solid point. I did want to try to avoid Mary Sue territory by modeling him after the kinda guy who seems pretty cool at first but slowly becomes a chore to deal with as you get to know him better, but you've certainly shaken my faith in the idea's integrity.

Unfortunately, this does mean scrapping or re purposing a majority of the themes and ideas I had. Still, if it's a bad idea, best that I find out now rather than after I had gone and written a shitty draft and gotten invested in the ideas.
