I'm thinking about drawing a comic mini series about Garnet pursuing a relationship with Jamie against Ruby and Sapphire's wishes. I think it'd be an interesting dynamic to have Garnet start to think of herself as her own being, not Ruby and Sapphire. The problem is, I don't really know how to go about that (I'm no writer)

Meaning all the drama in the show just doesn't seem to be genuine. This may be my whole take on this, but everything the characters go through, everything they fight for, nothing ever pays off. It's like the teenage weeb aping anime without understanding the nuance. He copies something he sees and doesn't know why, he just though it was cool. This show's got 4 seasons under it's belt and nothing to show for it. Sugar doesn't seem to really have a plan. I doubt she's even got an ending in mind. And the drama is, while effective at first, loses all meaning when you stop and think about it. That, coupled with the fact that the show loves to repeat itself takes me out of it. It's like something she doodled in college and got to make a show off. I know Sugar can do better than this, she's just not, and letting all her storyboarders have a say in the plot wasn't helping matters. I don't think Pearls' song should've won because it felt insincere and it was too long in the making just for Steven to tell Pearl to cut the wangst.

TL;DR great promise, no direction. And I feel even Rebecca's kind of getting sick of it.

Rose was fighting for the beauty of having no actual purpose in life like humans. There's a reason why there were gems who disagreed with her and a war broke out. Many like their jobs, like Peridot and Aqua, and feel that having assigned purposes make their lives more meaningful and gives their race more control and order

Jasper is fucked up because, like most gems, she doesn't realize that she is capable of living a life outside of her job. Her's was being PD's perfect soldier. After she lost PD, she lost everything and became purposeless, which lead her to become desperate to make up for it and eventually feel so worthless that she decided she deserved to be corrupted. Then there are gems like the Off Colors and Famethyst who are less obsessed with having worth and a purpose because they were given the chance to find happiness and satisfaction in activities outside of their assigned roles by being shunned. Topaz found the emotional fulfillment that came with fusion/a deep relationship that most gems probably don't get the chance to know about and therefore don't get sad about not having like she does

While we should realize that perfection is unattainable and not what humans or gems need to live fulfilling lives, there are always pros and cons to both sides. It is an overdone dilemma brought up in a lot of dystopian settings because as humans we are always striving for the kind of perfection that societies like HW always seem to have on paper

One example of a pro is how HW's collectivist and eugenic practices make sure that nobody will ever be an outcast. Being born into a purpose assures that you will never be a loser because it means that as long as you are willing to do the job you are made for you will have as much worth as any other person doing the job they were made for. Losers who don't want to take responsibility for their lives or appreciate the freedom they have to do whatever the fuck they want would probably find that idea appealing

I've always understood the complaints about the show trying to balance light hearted stuff and the lore, but I think they handle it a lot better than people give it credit for. The only real example of it being...flippant, I guess, for me was in Rocknaldo. Granted there's no reason for Steven to think they're in any immediate danger, but that wasn't really a good episode to follow up the Space arc.

I'm just glad we're moving into Season 5. Lots of plot, lots of lore. Animation seems a bit better from what we've seen too. Maybe that's the new art director doing the business.

jasper is my favorite because her character is very interesting and she is always doing something when she is on screen because she always has strong goals and desires.
i like how easy she is to sympathize with once you find out her motivations and how the writers focus on making her her own character instead of trying too hard to make her relatable and force everyone to feel bad for her as she does bad things, because that is something that tends to happen a lot in su and i am not fond of it.
i also appreciate that they didn't trash her character by shoving her in the barn for comedy relief or to make her into a tool used for shipping thus far and am looking forward to seeing more of her intriguing backstory, her getting healed and dealing with the after effects of her corruption, and finding out the truth behind pink diamond.
