Steven Universe is a flawed show by flawed people about flawed people. While certain fans overrate it, others overhate it. In spite of all its failings it still tells a compelling story with enjoyable characters, great music and well direct emotional moments. What it really lacks are well choreographed and weighted fight scenes, a consistent schedule and balanced episode ratios so plot and townie scenarios intertwine properly.

First off, /co/ was spreading misinformation.
Zamii was attacked NOT by a specific SU community, tumblr was harassing her for multiple things, /co/ blew it out of proportion and blamed it all on SU.

I've often felt like the flaws were present yet someone not as major as people make them out to be. A case of "nowhere to go but up" instead of "constantly at the bottom". Fight scenes could be better, pacing could be better etc. It really does seem like Sugar's learning as she goes on, which makes sense for her first show. Hopefully S5 on shows what did work and what didn't.

My issues with SU tend to be minor in the long run. things with particular characters, etc. My MAIN issue with the show itself is that there's no real consistency and a major lack of urgency. There's no real antagonist, there's no real threat, it's just monster of the week shit. The end of S4 is when the plot finally decides to pick up. The videa made a good point about the cluster arc. SU drops the bomb that there's an eldritch horror in the center of the planet that could kill everyone at any moment and a majority of the arc is spent fucking around doing nothing. I KNOW it was meant for Peri's redemption but could that not have happened at the same time as the plane destroying monster? And they hyped the shit out of Yellow Diamond and she has yet to really do anything. She's not a threat, she doesn't seem to give two shits about earth and everything seems fine otherwise so what's the point of her again?

I think Rebecca and Crew need to just come together, get a coherent narrative going and work from there. This branching story, townie, random slice of life bullshit is really fucking up the tone when we're supposed to be taking these threats seriously. The end of S4 showed a lot of promise. Let's hope they don't fuck it up like they always do.

I'm cool with emotional urgency. Everybody hurts sometimes. The problem is, none of the characters emotional issues never get solved. They're addressed but that's about it. Amethyst seems to be the only one who dealt with her inferiority complex and even that's questionable. I'm all for having a show about love and meeting conflict, that's the reason I started watching. But if you're going to have an overarching plot, doesn't it help to stick with that plot? That irritates me to no end. We've gone 4 seasons, the show's carried it's setting into space and the gem homeworld but we having moved a freaking inch. Sugar may as well have made an episodic series and that would've been fine. She could've made a slice of life and that would've been fine. She could've made an emotional character written drama, a space adventure, an action show, lore driven plot. That ALL would've been fine, but Sucrose is trying to fit all of that into a show and it's become a mess. What the show truly lacks, is focus.

Fair points and I can't disagree. I feel like Garnet's the kind of character people refer to when they talk about character's degrading (even though it's more like stagnating).
