Jasper doesn't even need to die to make that scene work so that none of them are taken away for 9 months and 2 seasons.

None of the homeworld gems are actually brimming with much personalty, Peridot and Lapis aren't really set character pieces, they're constantly shifting from Smart and cold to smart and autistic for Peridot, or moody to just plain weird for Lazuli
Jasper was mostly set up as a cliche saturday morning shredder from TMNT, but was then given his lore drop... unfortunately for Jasper's case, it was at the last second and it doesn't redeem what she's done at all.

With the kinda slight exception of Peridot on most cases, none of the homeworld gems even accept the CGs yet and they were all introduced 4 seasons ago.

She didn't canonly 'dindu nuffin', she canonly hurt a bunch of people out of selfishness and faced no consequences for it, then later felt guilty about it while Steven tried to make her not feel bad.

Characters are supposed to fuck up and then learn from it, if they're going to fuck up by doing something morally wrong that hurts someone else they're supposed to receive some sort of comeuppance to remain likable, but in SU that rarely happens with any characters except the ones that are being forced as the current antagonist; ie: sometimes with Peridot when she was a villain, Jasper, Kevin. This makes the writing feel inconsistent and like some characters deserve less/more punishment than what they actually received. Lapis is shit and comes across as a worse person than she is because nobody confronts her on how she tried to kill Steven and Connie and Greg or fusion raped Jasper, even though the show has set up all those things to be wrong, and they probably won't confront her about how much of a bitch she is for running away from helping Steven with her op powers either. They even made jokes about how she tried to kill Connie.

Anyone who isn't retarded knows that Lapis is not the victim of Malachite, nor was she treated as one by the other characters, she just was never villafied like Jasper. Rebecca said Lapis was supposed to be like a past abuse victim who wanted control of her life when it came to her reason for forming Malachite, and if they wanted to they could have made her a much more interesting character by teaching how abuse victims hurting others because of their own trauma doesn't make it okay. Completely woobifying a character who does bad things just because they have fucking depression is tumblr tier writing and deserves to be criticized
