I think people sometimes rely on the ship to carry the story, and lose a lot of the chemistry between them. I'm not saying it ruins a story, but they can get pretty bland at times when all that happens is they play does he does she until the very end where they kiss.
The movie managed to make everybody love them together without holding a romance subplot just out of reach.

What I hate more is the "does he does she" subplot constantly interfering with the main plot, and rarely are the two well balanced. Plenty of fics have these murder mysteries or theft crimes only to shove in our face "WILL THEY WON'T THEY" (along with annoying buck OC in the mix) constantly. Run was a good example of mixing the two well, focusing on Judy's election and the slow burn between them while adding a bit of drama to them that didn't focus on sole the romance aspect of their relationship... at least until the latest chapter, because fuck Ande883.
