That was a plot point from D.N.'s prototype. The eraser that came with the Death Note was able to revive a person within a limited amount of time if their name was written in it, and was erased with the special eraser.

Proto-Light found the Notebook and accidentally used it on someone, freaked out and tried to get rid of it, then another person found it and basically became Kira.

Proto-Light confronted Proto-Kira, and got the Notebook back, and managed to use the Eraser to revive the victims.
