Step 1: Don't use Paint, the aliasing will kill you. Use Paint.net at a minimum and turn off the Aliasing, which is this symbol. It's a free program and has many tricks.

Paint.net supports transparency. This means the default is not white, but nothing at all. You'd need to brush over it in white to get the equivalent of Paint's eraser. Or you can just put an extra layer beneath everything and flood-fill it with white. The program has many little tricks if you experiment.
