Kaz has another trouble to be concerned about. Homestuck is a 100% original concept, created from scratch and crafted into a huge success. Prequel is mooching off of Elder Scrolls, and even as a parody can only get so big. Kaz can never truly make Prequel into a Homestuck sized hit because he's always one step away from a C&D from Bethesda. In fact, he's made quite a bit of money off of someone else's IP, which is another matter all together...

Well that's the thing, either you try to make your own OC and it can be good but not have any readers, or you piggyback off of an established franchise but then at that point you can only go so far. Using Elder Scrolls gave he a good platform to jump from. It's well known so he can more easily get recognition by being a parody. Huh. There are a lot of people in this thread confusing trademark and copyright.

Copyright law protects specific portrayals. Like, if Beltaine wanted to raise a huff about me using a clip from their An Astrailhad cover in the first imp flash, they would do so under copyright law. It doesn't matter that it is an existing and very old song: the cover is still something THEY made. Copyright happens automatically the moment they make it - they just have to prove they made it, and I'd have to remove the song and pay them all the money I made off their cover ($0).

Trademark law protects a company's identity. Like, you can't make a burger chain called "McDonalds", because then you're benefiting from all their advertising and image. If I remember right, trademark law actually originated as a solution to the problem of counterfeit bread, where shitty bakers were sticking a good baker's logo on their bread to make it sell better. Unlike copyright law, trademarks actually have to be registered, and the registration requires you to put the business type (meaning you COULD make a garage door repair company called "McDonald's garage repair", as long as you didn't sell hamburgers).

I'm probably not at any huge risk from writing fanfiction, since I'm not selling any actual Beth content like models and writing (or even using that content in the comic), I'm not making things that compete with them, and I'm not even really using any trademarks other than the word "Redguard". Little things like having Dodger never use the word "Argonian" or refraining from calling the stuff I sell "Prequel merchandise" is honestly just overkill for fun. And if Bethesda ever tried to start some conflict, I have things set up so it would take me about one hour to turn this into Original Fantasy (tm).

It's less that it distracted me from writing so much as it just wasn't very good.

I think most of us start out with worldbuilding. We see people who make some sprawling setting, we go "I want one of those!", and we make one. Then we look back on it a few years later and realize we were basically just making random design decisions (let's give the characters tentacles instead of heads!") and throwing a standard-issue plotline over it.

I view it as something of a natural progression to slowly go from caring about setting to caring about stories. Amateur writers usually want to "have a setting" without thinking much about what it will be used for, and they "make the setting" through a series of arbitrary decisions of where locations are, who lives there, et cetera. People who have been writing longer come at it less from a desire for ownership and more from a desire to explore some element of a setting or genre that hasn't been touched by others.

Outside of legal constraints, the choice between making something fanfiction or original fiction is just arbitrary at that point (or leaning toward fanfiction, if you want to just directly bond with people who like the settings you do). And the legal constraints really aren't THAT bad.

There's no pleasure derived from being able to call the setting mine, and I don't really feel like I'm operating beneath someone's shadow. It's fun being able to poke at the games and their nuances, too, and that's something I'd lose in original fiction.

Look at more of this super cringeworthy old stuff though. Like, who was that text on it even written for? I think I was operating under the assumption that comic artists had to draw sheets depicting a character in several poses and summarizing their most unimportant attributes, not quite understanding that that sort of thing was so multiple artists could stay on-model while collaborating.

It's a little cringy but we all started somewhere. I just hope you find your spark again, that's why I thought some kind of change was in order to stop the almost 2 year hiatus. I like to watch don bluth movies and some old anime to get ideas to spur in my head. But you can't force creativity so if you're not feeling it, then you're just not. I don't know if there's a job or school in the way but that would be understandable too. Speaking for myself, I never really get to draw anymore since I'm in grad school all the time.

There wasn't really anything that came up besides my own bad collaboration decisions. Like, I should've been way more insistent that collborators show me progress as they work on some things, rather than just believing them when they said they'd be done in three months. There were some backgrounds that I had someone string me along for six months on before saying "turns out I can't do it", only for their replacement to string me along for six months before bailing too. Eventually I just paid a real professional to do it in like a week.

I don't want to be too hard on the freelancers themselves because they overestimated their abilities. If anyone is responsible, it's just me for not micromanaging them more to ensure things were getting done. If someone says "this is so easy I could do it in a weekend", then you should push to get it /that weekend/, not at the end of a longer deadline you've given them.

It's not even a particularly big or complicated update, I just decided to try outsourcing more to people I didn't know as well.

First, I would suggest using a felt tip pen, usually Faber Castell in 0.5 size would be good, you can usually pick them up for about $1.50 to $2.00 or so. For drawing a basic I personally use either an H, HB or 2H. Starting off in pen though forces you to not erase, use tactful, well planned and meaningful line placement (basically accuracy and to a lesser extent speed in drawing skill), it also forces you to see your mistakes and think critically as well, notably when approaching a subject before the pen/pencil even hits the paper to try to tackle it as quickly as possible mentally, as well as helping improve and slowly tweaking and calibrating your hand/eye coordination, interpreting what your eyes see to your hand and from your hand to the paper.

After maybe going for 2 to 3 sessions of figure drawing switch to pencil again, but switch on and off with each session with the two, it really gets the mental to physical interpretation accuracy on the paper much faster over time, than basic pencil drawing grinding.

For your 2 minute drawings, focus on gesture drawing, which is really just basic bare bones drawing, it both acts as a warm up and a way to feel the figure, movement and weight in the figure, look up some basic figure drawing examples on Google to get a good idea of this. Most times gestures look like shit, and that is partially their purpose.

Kaz here again. As far as I know, Rick doesn't come from money or spend much more than an ordinary person does on their hobbies. His hobby is just commissioning artists he likes. I know he budgets his expenses for things like cons and has limits to what he'll spend in a given stretch of time. He's only spent around $200 on commissions from me, so it's not like he's Secretly Funding Me. Some of of you guys have spent more than that.

I don't think it comes across online, but Rick is really self-aware about how weird his tastes are.
