Poorly written or tacked-on companions (which unfortunately is most of them) are a massive waste of space and aren't worth bothering with, but I'm a lot more likely to look at a CYOA with companions than one without, I just want them to have some genuine life and personality to them or for them to fulfill a function, like in battlemage. Using battlemage as an example, the companions are there primarily to allow a greater diversity of player builds by giving options to cover weaknesses so that a player doesn't have to become a master of everything and breaking the game's tone. It also gives support-types something to do by giving them someone to support. The companions enhance the game by giving another layer of depth to the choices in a players build, which is the primary draw of the game, in my opinion

Really the main issue is that companions have to feel like they fit the tone/what the cyoa is working towards and most of them don't unless the whole CYOA is built around the companions themselves and in those cases, the companions need to be strong enough to carry the whole CYOA themselves, which is a case of YMMV.

How you can deal with this depends on the approach you take with the CYOA. If you're doing a...static age regression CYOA, where you're put to a certain age and that's that, then please build in mechanics for the future, like something about how we're hit by puberty. If you're doing more of a storybook CYOA, where we start at a young age and the CYOA walks us up through years, then that changes things.

Look, this is bogging down the thread so I'm not going to keep going now that I've said my piece. But there's a ton more to the genre than the two extremes you've laid out (raw power ignoring lewd vs f-cup badonkadonk babies). Parental conditioning, environment you're reared in, the way you age up, adjusting to a dramatically different identity, punishment, powerlessness, relationship with peers, school life, getting hit by puberty again. Unless I'm missing something, the CYOA hasn't been released yet and could contain any (or none) of these.

Age regression can mean a lot of different things and touch on a lot of fetishes. It just contains one major anti-fetish that a number of other people have touched on with previous CYOAs. I don't know how many of us there are (we could be the majority for all I know), but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that it's pretty easily fixed if the authors know and care to just throw us a bone. The author was soliciting advice and it seemed prudent to toss this in. There we go, all done.
