You know, as autistic as it sounds, I've always liked the idea of a species revolution of sorts. I think I can blame Half life 2 on this, but the idea of a species (preferably human) using their wits and smarts to overcome, or at least escape, their dominant captors. Yeah adding on this point. Leather involes, you know killing the animal to get it. Most animals weren't bred just to be killed if they could get other resources from them. In the case of cows, dairy products. You would have to be very wealthy to have a whole herd just to kill for their hides.

Then you have to consider that
A. Leather does have lots of needed uses like boots.
B. Isn't great armor anyway. You would either use plate, mail or Gambeson. Particularly Gambeson which is a padded armor stuffed with linen or wool. It is cheaper, easy to repair, just put some more stuffing in instead of stiching it up and offers decent protection.


On the subject of the story. Bats and nobles. How does that work. Nobles were a class of Super heavy cavalrymen. Horses of course might not exist (but considering the carriage may in this one), but it would still be a elite heavily armoured warrior. Which bats wouldn't really work with. They are light and have big wings that would hinder armor. Of course I will wait and see how that is addressed, but it might be better for her to be a part of a merchant family, not landed nobility.

Ah, I suppose that does make sense! I'll admit I'm hardly a historical buff, and most of this stuff I'm learning as I go, so thank you for the input on this as well! I'll take that into consideration for the future. I suppose my setting is somewhat fantastical in nature, due to it not being a perfect reflection of Medieval times, but I want to try and keep it close to realistic at the very least!

This is a bit of a longer answer, but I hope you'll find it satisfactory! I originally went with Bats as it seemed to be a favorite in the thread due in part to their scarcity, and the more I thought about it, the more I found myself liking them. There's a certain underdog quality to them in a setting in which they might be forced to fight bears and wolves and the like. On top of that, due to their natures, it also gives them a sort of supernatural aspect as well, which can be fun to play with. I didn't want to just stick anon with the king or queen of the land as I worried that might lead to a somewhat stagnant story, as well as being rather similar to others, at least in terms of owners and some themes.

Basically, Bats seemed to be well-liked, and they made a fun underdog from which a lot of potential scenarios and interactions can happen.

When it comes to nobility, from what I've seen and read, while quite often Knights were Nobles and Nobles were Knights, it wasn't 100%. While yes, it's unlikely, you don't have to be a noble to be a knight, and vice versa. This also plays somewhat into the underdog stature, of beings that aren't properly suited to the roles they're forced to play. I'm actually planning on having some parts later on in the story that address the fact that they're not really suited for the same combat others are in this world.

As somebody who actually works with leather, as in, the real stuff IRL, it comes in many forms and many formats. Gambesons are only good if you can produce a fuckload of linen or in certain cases wool, (lmao hope you don't live in a warm or wet climate) which is why that style of armor never caught on outside of certain locations historically. Cotton is just too fucking crazy to produce using medieval technology, don't even bother.

However, if you have access to a metric fuckton of animals (protip: not all leather comes from cows) you can easily have semi-flexible, tough leather armor for a lot of people that does everything a gambeson does and more. (in that you won't die from heat stroke using it)

Leather is very versatile stuff, in some cases it's better than metal in performance.

Also knights were pretty much universally considered minor nobility, even as far back as the Roman Republic. What we think of as the quintessential knight in armor on horseback begins in earnest in the 12th century, and by that time it was a social as well as military rank and was, without a doubt, minor nobility. You're thinking of men-at-arms, which were non-nobles and served the same functions on the battlefield. Again, a distinction that arose in the 12th century.

Here's another tip regarding the armor before I head off to sleep:

Armor, weapons, and other soldiering equipment are all products of the tactics, environment, and, in your case, the biology of the user. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, this is a constant that has dominated warfare from the copper age to now and will continue on into the future. New technologies demand new doctrine which shapes further development, it is always going to circle back home to doctrine being the driving force.

That said if your bat people somehow fly they're probably not going to be doing it armored.

That's true, though I do also like the idea of them being somewhat forced into an unfavorable position when it comes to warfare. I imagine it has something to do with the core tenets of the kingdom they're a part of, tenets that typically work for most species, but leave others at a disadvantage. Mostly, I think it makes for a more interesting setting, giving the people anon's with far more to struggle and strive against, which in turns allows them to grow further.

As for flight, I think I might keep it as a rarity that happens, but yeah, no full-plate flyers will be happening any time soon. Even for fantasy furry land, that seems more than a little over-the-top.
