It's less about how good/bad the art may be and more based on how much of a cunt the artist is. Hearlesssoul is pretty stagnant stylistically but is mellow so people generally give him a pass. Tojyo is one of the best but throws a bitchfit if anyone offers critque, so he gets shit on.

This may not actually help at all, but what the hell: The best thing to do if you're trying to avoid your work looking too on-model/"official" when drawing characters from a series is to pick out the character's most important design elements and personality traits, and then apply those to your own style of drawing.

For example, Amy is a pink hedgehog who wears a red dress and boots. She also has big, round eyes and acts like the typical "enthusiastic girl" trope that Japan loves so much. Keep that stuff in mind while you draw her and she'll probably look like Amy. Like, you don't have to draw "Sonic-style" eyes, just round and open ones.

If I'm not explaining this very well, just.. look for things that you think are really important to Amy's silhouette. The things that stick out the most to you are probably important enough to adapt into your version of her.

My two cents is more universal. All art, is based off of real life. Art mimics real life. The better you are at drawing real world objects and fundamental features, the better your cartoons and characters will end up looking. It marks the difference of drawing what you "think" is there and drawing what's "actually" there.

To connect this to your question, your style of drawing Sonic characters will develop organically if you focus on how the body works in real life. Once you understand the complexity of the bodies movement drawn on paper, you then can begin to manipulate certain features to make your preferred Sonic Style. This is how you make your unique style.

Not that guy, but I'm the guy that drew it. It's cool. Literally the second pic I've drawn, so I'm still working on stuff my own self.

Based on the Book version, they should be around four foot or a little taller. Boom Eggman is 6'1, and the characters are a little over half as tall as him. Some taller (knuckles) some shorter (tails). I think it's safd to assume Amy is around 4'4"ish. My story Anon is a 5'6" manlet, so he's got a little over a foot on her.

My logic could be completely wrong, I dunno. But it's what I'm going by for now lol.
