Let's see, You described the main character as "lower" than everyone else but I never got a good feel for how tall he, or the Hamster's he lives with are. Not a huge deal just something that I kinda wondered about afterwords.

Since you don't just want unassuming, but something that could be either, then I'd go with something medium sized. Which means foxes, smaller wolves, medium/small cats, larger mustelids, and possibly a panda that isn't a fat fucker.

Outside of obvious ones like tigers, lions, and larger wolves, most of what you're looking for would more depend on the character rather than the species. How they dress, how they act, how they carry themselves.

You could have a cute, tiny ferret. But if they walk and talk like the tiger chick, that'll kinda dispel that illusion rather quickly.

Just having a softer expression or gentle personality in looser/more practical/conservative clothes could easily fill that.

It might trigger some autists who insist that everything make sense, but novellas on pastebin who's primary audience are the denizens of 4chan's trash can don't exactly require waterproof world building. Save that effort and energy for serious projects, not niche fetish literotica or hobby writing that'll never see neither the eyes or desk of an editor.

A cacophony from the main room of the Inn drew the owner out from the back of the small building, her hurried movements kicking out small puffs of dust from the hard packed dirt floor.

“Miss Kitty!”, one of the serving girls yelled as she rounded the corner, yelping as the pair nearly collided. “Oh! Heh... sorry.”

She was lithe cat, garbed in a simple faded green dress, trimmed in white.

“What’s all the commotion about this time?” ‘Kitty’ asked with a huff, hands on her hips.

“It’s the Watch.” She whispered, “They’re here, lots of em.”

This part of town, the ‘Alienage’, was entirely populated by non-humans; therefore they normally had thought of little reason to come unless called directly. For the most part, they used to treat the population of the Alienage with a distant gruffness she’d came to associate with most of mankind.

She tensed, turning back the way she came, “Red!”

But that was before the ‘Burning’. A human noble and his family had been kidnapped and taken into the sequestered part of the city by a band of cutthroats who’d found a way out of the Alienage. After an unsuccessful negotiation, a brawl broke out between the gang and group of watchmen, leading to a number of injuries and deaths, including the nobleman’s son. A few days later, in the middle of the night, the gates opened and the Watch cut a bloody path from one of the Alienage to the other, little more than revenge with all manner of wanton debauchery and violence in their wake.

The fox came running at the call.He wore little more than a pair of pants, the air was heavy this time of year in the inn’s storehouse. His fur dirty and matted.

“With the showing you gave them the last time you were here, you lot should be glad they haven’t ripped you apart the moment you stepped in here.” A different voice said, low toned. “Go on and try the next one.”

Against her better judgement, screaming at herself to stop, she lifted the bar and opened the door.

She found herself looking at her own reflection, her distorted face looking back at her from the polished breastplate of the titanic human standing in her door. She was rooted to the spot, she could hear her heart hammering in her chest, letting out little more than a gasp.

The human was massive, taller than her by a head and garbed in armor the likes of which she’d never seen. From head to toe she couldn’t see a spot that wasn’t covered by some type of metal. The helm was the most striking, two plates of metal coming to a wedged point with small cross shaped holes to see from, so small she doubted she could even get one of her claws through. The piece of metal over his right shoulder had a admittedly breathtaking inlay of curling and intertwining lines and patterns etched into it, his left was painted in checkered pattern of blue and white. Across his chest was a short chain running from shoulder to shoulder on which a large pendant hung from the left side, a emblem of a pair of pole-axes crossed above a human skull. From the waist hung a pair of skirt like piece of armor, one for the outside of each leg, a piece of cloth hung from the waste as well; split down the middle and at the sides to allow movement she assumed. The cloth was colored the same as his right shoulder, checkered blue and white and reached down to just past the knees. His lower legs wanted not for protection either, covered in as much metal as the rest of the man. Under all that was a coat of ring mail, coving whatever the metal couldn’t. Never had she seen a more intricate suit of armor, even the individual joints of the fingers each had a small piece of metal covering them.

The only weapon that she could see he in his possession was a poleaxe taller than he was, the haft wrapped in old looking leather and topped with a wicked point.

She heard the armor shift and rattle as the human shifted his weight from one leg to the other, resting the poleaxe in the crook between his shoulder and neck as he did. He brushed his hands on each other, the steel clacking.

“Are you the owner of this establishment?” He asked, voice even and measured, his head nodding at the small iron sign that simply read ‘Inn’.

“Yes.” She said after a pause to compose herself, crossing her arms across her chest.

“I’d like to talk with you,” He said, leaning on his poleaxe to bring himself down to more of a face-to-face level with her. “May I come in?”

“Are you with him?” She said, glaring at the Watchman peering at her from behind the armored giant.

In comparison the Watchman looked to be just a child, shorter than even her. His armor a pitiful mirror of the other’s. Little more than a gambeson and a helmet with a little bit of mail hanging from the helm to protect the neck from slashes. A sword was at his hip, a shield on one arm.

The giant turned back to glance at the other human before turning back to her.

“Yes and no.” He shrugged, the metal pauldrons bouncing as he did. “If you are asking if I’m a man of the City Watch, then no, I'm not. We, meaning myself and those of my order, have been hired by his regent in a counselling role and to conduct an independent investigation. So, in a way; yes, we are working together.”

“An investigation? Into what, the Burning?” She asked incredulously. “The Watch came in slaughtered us!” She barked.

“After you killed Lord Harron’s son!” The Watchman called from behind, causing the other Watchmen in the square to turn towards the Inn.

“Quiet Michal.” The man turned and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Go on help Brother Aston, I believe I can handle this on my own.” He pointed to another human, armored in a similar fashion to himself, though the colors that adorned his armor were different.

“What do you want to know about it?” She asked, watching the smaller man walk away muttering curses.

“What you saw, what you heard.” He said. “Whatever you remember. You’re the first to talk to any of us.”

“That’s unsurprising.” She scoffed. “What if I don’t want to talk?”

He looked around with a shrug, “Always another door to try.”

She moved her hands to her hips, “If I do, what happens after that?”

He rapped the poleaxe on the ground, “Justice.”

She eyed the man best she could through his visor before stepping back.

The human took the unspoken offer and made to enter before she placed a hand on his breastplate, shuttering at the surprising warmth of the sun baked steel.

“Your axe stays outside.” She said curtly.

If she had to guess she’d say he was looking at her with a the same kind of face he’d have if she’d asked him to cut of the arm holding it as well. He glanced at the weapon before relenting with a sigh, and placed it beside the door on the outside of the inn.

He had to duck slightly to prevent him from knocking his head on the door-frame.

“Have a seat, this’ll take some time.” She said, absently gesturing to the long bench that took up the majority of the room. “Would you like something to drink?” Already moving to grab herself a tankard.

“Water if you have it.” Though she wasn’t looking at him she could tell from the sounds alone he was in the process of taking off his helm, bookended by a thunk of metal on wood. “Light ale or beer if not.”

“I don’t want to be the catalyst for an inquisition.”

“Does this feel like one?” He asked, arms motioning around the room.

“Not yet.” She answered.

“We are bound by an unbreakable oath, avowed to shield the weak from the wicked. Where order has fallen to the wayside, where cruelty and lawlessness rule, we come and deliver swift and uncompromising justice to restore the rule of law. We go wherever we are needed or called. “A noble pursuit.” Kajortoq nodded. “But the Watch isn’t bound by your rules, once you leave what’s stopping them from coming by every home and business you and yours stopped by and having themselves another bonfire?”

He sat up, “We have ways to maintain the peace.”

“What of the human that ordered the Burning?” She asked, “Whatever happened here he, she, they; whoever, ordered that raid and hundreds died for it.”

Well, first things first, know the scale of your work. That way you don't try to shove the explanation of a political system, a religion, and four cultures into something less than 10k words in length. If you have to ask how to write a story, then you sure as hell don't need to be shooting for novel length. Get some short stories under your belt before you even dream of approaching an editor, let alone a goddamn publisher.

Keep it succinct; my two long pieces (Tough to Love and Lightning in a Bottle) were purposely aimed to finish at 11kish words, which is one of Wikipedia's word count requirements to be considered novellas. That way I have a goal to shoot for when I do something substantial instead of just churn out an update (Femme Fatal, by the way, has passed some 21k total words according to WPS Writer), but it helps me approach it seriously while also keeping myself grounded in my capabilities. Fun fact: I'm not writing expert beyond my experience as a college tutor and having RPed for years; /hmofa/ has seen literally all of my written material because it's the only thing I've done. I have a 'serious' non-smut story that's a couple pages in, but writing /hmofa/ stuff is usually more fun.

Right, so you have sanded your expectations down and reminded yourself you're not the next Stephen King or J.K. Rowling. Short stories are perfectly fine to go for, but force you to realize that you can't just spew words upon words like a torrent of information; raw info dumps are a cardinal sin in writing. So if you want to world build and bring the reader into the know about the goings on of the setting, you have to do so in passing as the story progresses.

The thing that will make sure you actually write your story is having the story already planned out, at least a little. You remember the outlines you made for highschool and college assignments? Yeah, you could use the same method if it helps.

Have the entire concept of the story you want to tell already written out. And then, add a beginning, middle, and end. Or, and end, beginning, and middle. You can mix and match these; Lightning in the Bottle was basically written backwards from how I wanted it to end (dude handcuffed to a bed at the mercy of an enthusiastic rat) and then figuring out how things got that way.

So you know how things are going to go ahead of time when you start writing; point A, B, and C are marked, and you just have to hustle between them. This removes the "so, hmmm, where do I go next from here?" because you already know what should come next, AND since it's a short story you don't time to dilly dally about it. Now you can settle in and get to writing.

Eventually you bang out your story, and you get to the true final boss of writing; review, editing, and rewriting. Repeat after me, because if you ignore this you'll regret it: No first draft is the final draft. You hit that finally punctuation mark take a well deserved break, but you have to come back and put in some time with a hatchet and a polish rag.

Is there a part that feels a bit bland and could survive an injection of a paragraph or three? Did you go overboard on another part and realize things are getting dry? Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. Check your word usage, make sure you're keeping in the same tense. The story has been written, but the elbow grease comes out while you're editing. You may want to employ a friend or two to read over what you have, just in case they see problems that you're glossing over.

When you finally can't get anymore shine out of your piece (or you cannot be fucked to go another round of editing), go ahead and let it out into the wild.

Hey guys, I'm the anon writing up that quickie about the panda milf. Taking the advice I'm extending it so it's not such a rush job and adding a lot of extra bits to it, but it's taking longer than I thought.

And since I hit a wall writing it, I took a break to write a shorter story. One more fantasy-oriented, tell me what you think.

It was conquered and re purposed into vast farmlands to feed the growing colony. The deerfolk were captured en masse and taken back to Rome in chains to serve as the first slaves of this new empire.

Finally got around to reading it.

I like Angela's 80's outfit. I'm not sure what inspired it, but I find it pretty funny. The hyena girls were good. My only problem with the story itself was Angelia's Terminator sprint, and maybe two hyena's somehow climbing up to a second story completely silent.

I'm far too tired at the moment to do a full grammatical assessment of it all, but I will say that you have to ease off on the comma use. You used commas in places where they were either unnecessary, or you would have been better served using a period, semi-colon, or even a colon proper.

I am a fan the idea that the Family is just populated by mostly waifurs (and husbears, I guess) that are insecure in one way or another and are finding solace in non-criminal, only partially consenting anons.
