If a professional fursuit is $2500 and you can prototype one with craft foam for $200 and build one fully for $800 to $1000, that means you'll be able to create at least seven prototypes before having things become more expensive than just buying one, with the biggest advantage in doing this being experience you'll gain along the way.
If you practice a craft, you'll only get better, and if you're thinking long term and might eventually want more than one fursuit, learning to do it yourself is probably the way to go.

All this being said though, I can't really speak from experience, I'm just generally a DIY advocate for situations where it's reasonable to do something yourself.

I made one w/o chest piece, feetsies and tail with <$50 total using high quality fur, foam and fence reinforcement and still got tons of materials leftover. Notably there was little padding except for the mask.
Zero previous experience. It's super lame tho and I can't fit inside anymore, but all parts except mask (which I fucked up due to haste) is of passable quality. Nothing fancy tho.
No pics cuz too ashamed of it.

Best advice I can give is: for the love of God - *do* start with the mask, then make everything else to match. Otherwise it'll flop 90% unless you're a professional tailor.

PS: I still use the glove part in the winter.

Where did you get your fur? I've looked at a lot of reviews for sites that sell fur and the ones that are recommended sell their shag at $20-30/yd.

Well I didn't browse much.
Just went to the closest fur store and made the purchase so no idea really how good of a deal it was.
It was before the age of widespread online shopping, some ~10 years ago.
Maybe it was leftovers that didn't sell, dunno. It just happened to be what I was looking for.

Alternatively quality is shit and I just have no way to tell because I've never actually had a real-life comparison.
As far as looks go it looks just like the fur ITT. But maybe it's crap to the touch, hell if I can tell.

But yeah, it was still the most costly material, alone making roughly 80% of the price total.

Also keep in mind the pieces were large enough only for limbs+hands+mask, I'd probably have to go with 3 times that if I wanted a full suit, perhaps more.

It was a fun experiment nevertheless.
I'd consider doing it again if not for the cost.

-The few makers that make fucksuits/murrsuits make them with SPHs. No, they aren't a myth. It's just they're only common on the already uncommon murrsuit. Some use zippers I think but I can't tell you how, I'm only knowledgeable about fursuits in general

-If you want to use a suit for sexual reasons, it's just best to commission someone who makes them, or have two bodysuits like a lot of murrsuiters do. If you alter a suit, know you're voiding a warrenty and your suit maker won't help out.

-i'm sure you could make a hidden zipper or snap button system if you really wanna just have one body. Most murrsuiters just cover their suit's crotch with underwear, shorts, a skirt, or pants as I assume they just have a small slit for their genitalia to come out of

I think it'd be pretty easy to do with some special stuff.
Hard smooth soles and soft squishy leather maybe on the contact parts of the feet.
Naturally that'd vary from person to person, so you'd need to do your own foot, or send in a scan...
but this is all just my speculation.
