Well, I had Ariannis's picture on hand because she's also a character for an RP of mine. That version of Ariannis is much more /ss/ inclined than FF's (also has a different name that I can't recall at the moment), but she was always a underworld-connections-don't-ask-questions kind of character.

For my characters both RP and writing, I take a look at the art as inspiration. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, but I believe that if you try, you can get 10k out of a picture. So I saw the scars, the eye patch, the cigar, and thought "Yeah, this is a person who runs a militia or cartel out of South America, but has definitely enjoys the benefits of first world society enough to behave when people are looking." That, along with a bunch of other details, like how Ariannis is always teasing and/or indirectly threatening while talking to people; talking 'straight' is simply not what she does if she can help it, because messing with people is funny to her. All of this just came from looking over her art.

The actual plot of FF (Anon's landlord needs a date, Anon is in the perfect position to be blackmailed) is just a variation on the hook of the RP profile original-Ariannis came from. I've been playing it off the cuff and flying by the seat of my pants for FF's direction past the first meeting. Same with Pactbearer; I have no idea where I'll take that.

So, after seeing it hyped up in this thread, I took a look at Beating the Heat.

Gotta say, I'm impressed. The author's got a good prose style, and while there's some pretty significant time compression at points, the plot's developed enough for the purpose it's driving towards. Definitely looking forward to more.
