I'd be pretty tempted to trade up if there were significant benefits, like health and athletics and sexiness, but the downsides of being the only one are probably even bigger. The chimera is not going to be a lab-grown human with pig ears and nose, but a pig embryo that has been injected with human stem cells in order for it to produce tissues hopefully compatible with human organisms. This is a huge step towards supplying hospitals with organs and tissues necessary for transplantation and potentially saving thousands of lives. Currently it seems inviable since there is much pig tissue in the results, but if the current roadblocks can be overcome, such as somehow increasing the number of human cells a pig embryo can tolerate, we could soon have available tissues for those in need, which is in fact doing the opposite of dooming the planet.

Probably not a good idea. Both space exploration and genetic modification at the level of creating new species are monumental tasks for our current technology. I'd say that the latter is more of a challenge.
But as things currently are, aerospace technology is well developed and we are generally more familiar with it. The progress on new forms of propulsion is slowly being made and our technology on materials and alloys is also taking some deliberate steps.
Creating a new breed of humans is quite a problem. There is no easy way to simply make a human "space-ready" at the genetic level, partly because we don't have an example of how such a creature is. By trying to make humans more resilient, you'll also run into the bane of any multi cellular organism, which is cancer. Say the way you go about increasing the resilience in humans is by increasing muscle and bone density, to minimize strength loss in space. One way to do that is by prolonging or intensifying the process of puberty to release more hormones and stimulating the growth of tissue. More tissue replication means more cells undergoing mitosis, which means more DNA is being copied and read, creating more opportunities for mutations and eventually cancer.
I believe the best way to go about making humans space-ready is by developing technology we could use to circumvent the effects of being in space. Like everyone else already said, only if it's not a singular situation. Being the only one would destroy what few relationships I have and I'd end up dead, stuck in a lab, or some other bullshit.
