I feel one peculiar quirk of this the continuation of the rabbits foot charm, where the head of the family can take the foot of a notable figure in his family when they die. Perhaps either to confer blessing or favor, to anchor their spirit, or some other such thing.
The average home probably has a shrine to the honored dead of that particular family.
