Good. Looking forward to what you both come up with.

I suppose I should also post this note from Aaron from last thread, which I guess must have come from a Patreon email?

"Hello, all! First, the bad news; my by-now infamous leg has become infected yet again and Endtown will be going on hiatus for three weeks. As of Monday morning, I do not know if this will require hospitalization, but I will know by the end of the day once the blood tests have been completed . Either way, I'll be in a antibiotic allergy haze for the duration. Frankly, this stinks. But there are chronic conditions that stink far worse than this, so I count my blessings. I'll keep everyone posted.

The good news? Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun on this, but there is another Endtown side-project in the works. Not to let the cat fully out of the bag, I can say that I'm on board as a writer/supervisor, my co-writer is a very talented friend whom I'm excited to be working with, and that the artist is absolutely top-notch. Fingers crossed."

I've always thought it was a misinterpretation. Someone probably asked him if they were "Anatomically Correct", meaning "Do they have animal parts?", and Aaron read it as "Do they have parts at all or are they like Barbie dolls?", and said yes.

As for Jim and Sarah's mutual reactions... munchkin anthros just have universal micropenis? Look at Farx - he's pantsless and you can't see anything...

Thank you! His character was more or less inspired by that panel so I'm glad you're digging him! Topsiders seem like they really extol their humanity to a fanatical degree, to the point where everyone else is subhuman and therefore not suitable for continued survival. Hence where that 'humanity fuck yeah!' attitude comes from.

Where Aaron dehumanizes Topsiders to the audience, the mutants literally are dehumanized to them, so it's really interesting how that divide works.

I swear I remember seeing this as very old (like circa 2012) information on a defunct Endtown wiki page/forum somewhere. Maybe that's where the idea came from? Reading through this one thing strikes me as ind of strange: these are educated adults from the world of yesteryear, right? Why is the Atlantic ocean called 'the Great Water' when it's an ocean. Anyone not under the age of 10 that had some proper education should know geography enough to be able to name things like continents and oceans, right? I understand the featureless plain being simplified into 'the Great Waste' but anything else feels a little hokey.

Well, we know that Amesworthy radiation destroys water and turns everything into dust so, after it was used so extensively during WWIII, still having an ocean is still rumors and hear-say.
>>
>>10200463
Even with the amount of bombs that hit and the presence of some large collection of water it stands to reason that not all of the Atlantic had been vaporized by the radiation, though the coastline past Neitherland and Hillside probably expanded exponentially from their original point if I had to guess.
>>
>>10200331
True, you'd expect that to be the kind of linguistic- and memory-shift that would happen after a hundred years or more, when all the people from the war generation had died off, not eight. And even then it'd only happen if there had been a massive breakdown of records and information.

Add to that, for something that was present in the artwork and dropped as solid setting info for anyone who wanted to to build a game on, we've yet to hear anyone in the comic so much as mention the "Great Water" or "Great Green". The closest thing I can recall is Jim and Sarah mentioning that there were green areas outside the Waste (which Wally reacted to with surprise despite his original introduction being pretty clear about him having come from outside the Waste himself).

Maybe it was a whimsical element he eventually dropped?

>>10200463
Destroys water? How?

If it evaporated it it would just condense again in short order as a massive rain storm, and if it separated it into hydrogen and oxygen it'd eventually just oxidise back into water anyway... even quicker if it was entire oceans, as the two elements would be extremely concentrated (and due to that, you'd be able to figure out if the oceans HAD been electrolysed just by measuring the atmosphere).

>Destroys water? How?
I used the word "destroys" mostly because I don't know how Amesworthy radiation works. All I know is it turns things into dust. Aaron doesn't have a background in chemistry so the law of "Matter cannot be created or destroyed" has no meaning to him (if Marx isn't already proof of that).
>>
>>10200720
Sounds more like it's just a dodge so that people disintegrate into cool piles of dust instead of icky mud, then. And Marx explicitly has supertech on his side via that Dimensionometer thing, so anything he appears to do can probably just be written off as "Sufficiently advanced technology".

But if anything, in order to not be apparent as clinging, condensing steam, it'd have to electrolyse, to break apart into hydrogen and oxygen, so even then the water would just be waiting "in potentia" to come back and people would be able to guess the state of the oceans by testing the atmosphere for excess amounts of those elements (and enough of that to constitute even one ocean would probably raise the combustibility of the atmosphere by a measurable degree).

I doubt the oceans were heavily affected anyway - nobody was nuking them (and why would they be?), it was all city-to-city stuff, and besides that, it's been mentioned that it still rains (and we've even seen Wally collecting rainwater, so rain is still reliable enough to be counted upon for crossing the Waste), which would be much less viable if a large amount of the Earth's water had been vanished like you say.
>>
>>10200928
What I'm trying to say is the world as we know it has been nuked into the setting of Krazy Kat and and everyone is still questioning if there even is an ocean. Nobody we know of has seen it and all anyone knows story-wise is just rumors. For their location the "Great Water" could just be the remnants of the great lakes for all we know. There is such a lack of information to them that they don't even know how the world has changed after the war. It's not like they can send up satellites to map what's left of the world.
>>
>>10201197
Still seems odd to be mythologising it as "The Great Water" only eight years after the end, though. I could see the *kids* of Endtown calling it that, maybe... you'd think the generation that remembers it would be referring either to "The Lakes" or "The Ocean" at their briefest. They honestly don't seem like the poetic sort. And we still haven't heard the merest mention of those names in the comic, I'm pretty sure.

Strikes me, though, that we know Aaron at least has let slip that the ocean exists because it figures into his claims about his previously intended ending for Holly.

>It's not like they can send up satellites to map what's left of the world.
In before Mallard has hooked into the data stream from the Topsider satellite somehow.

And come to think of it, I wonder if it's going to become significant that Wally saw a glimpse of a post-war global scan?

>And Marx explicitly has supertech on his side via that Dimensionometer thing, so anything he appears to do can probably just be written off as "Sufficiently advanced technology"
I've said a million times by now so I wonder why people still latch onto this misconception: the dimension-o-METER just keeps track of the dimensions, everything else is done by Marx himself because he is not really human but a counterpart to Eye.
>>
>>10202710
>I've said a million times by now so I wonder why people still latch onto this misconception: the dimension-o-METER just keeps track of the dimensions
Sorry, but I think unless you've got something directly from Aaron to go on then you're going by name a little too much there, yourself.

For one thing, Aaron's said the plot is linked to "Albert", and I don't recall Marx needing the Dimensionometer to find his way between dimensions there from what I saw of that comic. Heck, didn't he happily grab a stick of gum cross-reality without needing the device in one Endtown strip, just to prove a point to Mallard? (I'd find the strip myself, but GoComics seems to be down right now.)

I suspect only his planes-walker powers are native to himself, and everything else is super-techno-trickery - he might even still have that multidimensional coat from the prototype Marx comic (very Doctor Who). At the very least the plot treats the Dimensionometer as the source of his hypnotic powers, not merely the focus of them. When Mallard grabs the thing it leaves Marx somewhat humbled and compliant until he gets it back.

My guess is that, if anything, it's a method of measuring changes to dimensions as he messes with the "plot", not keeping track of his location between them, and if it can observe like that, it may also be able to alter (which ties into the whole framing of the concept in quantum theory terms) - such as when Marx changed the velocity vectors of a bunch of bullets right before whipping it out.

>everything else is done by Marx himself because he is not really human but a counterpart to Eye.
He's Eye's nemesis and functional counterpart in the narrative/Aaron's personal writing conceits, not necessarily its existential counterpart. Besides which, we've seen them both do very different things.

And now I remember where I saw something about this just recently.

So: Dimensionometer is a device for measuring reality intersections/interactions, not necessarily location, and nothing about Marx is magical, which implies it's all some kind of super-tech or at least some manner of ability grounded in reality, right down to the dimension-hopping, which does appear to be intrinsic (with the proviso that "reality" in this comic includes souls as well as the afterlife as a physical location where said souls are visible to the naked eye).

At the very least I want to say him standing on thin air and vanishing in Jacob's office were simply ditto tricks.
>>
>>10203343
Marx is not magic, he is like the "magician" from the Deadeyes strip or Q from Stark Trek. Beings so different that what they can do looks like magic to us. Though what makes Marx special, aside from being "infinite", is that he can tunnel through realities like it's nothing with his bare "hands" while everyone else needs technology for it.
>>
>>10203399
Yes, that's the one trait which has always been "built in", though, even in the earlier non-Endtown comics. I'm willing to bet that everything else comes from shit he's picked up on his travels, much like the ship he won (in a card game, if I remember correctly?)

I've always seen him more as a Doctor Who than a Q, at least in terms of powers. Attitude/personality wise, sure - he's Q without even a speck of the charm or appeal.
>>
>>10203443
I think Marx could've worked if he was used only a few times and made it explicit that he suffers from being alone due to being so annoying.

Was thinking about this... what are the odds it's something like "Endtown: Year One"?

I mean, it's been brought up a few times in the comic and it seems pretty critical to the backstory, but Aaron's missed two consecutive chances for giving us a proper look at it (once when he finally cut off Holly's too-long flashback just as the elevator departed for Endtown and once when Walt gave us nothing but a short angsty story that ended before Endtown even came up). Maybe he's about to hand it off to other people?
>>
>>10217637
Could be possible, though with so little we know of this supposed project it could be anything. I'm personally hoping for material that does reveal a lot, like your suggested 'Endtown: Year One". I remember Walt himself referencing how bad it used to be, whatever that means. Imo Endtown already seems kind of shitty so it's hard to think of how worse it could have been.

I'm guessing suicides, constant Schism reports, possible cannibalism maybe.
>>
>>10218430
I do wonder, though, if it's going to be freely available online or if it's going to be some paid thing. If it's the latter, then like Walt's fishing story it can't be critical to the overall plot.

No matter how he looks outside, it's sill Marx inside. I remember how one drawfag was having a nervous breakdown over the thought of almost drawing smut of Marx.
>>
>>10220188
>Marx's fursona is a fox
>foxes traditionally were portrayed as fast talking, untrustworthy charlatans who will probably trick you and/or eat you if you're a chicken or rabbit
>only recent films and Disney's portrayal of foxes positively (Robin Hood/Fox and the Hound/Zootopia) changed the older popular perceptions to the modern sensibility of misunderstood but charming rogue

If Aaron's 'cartoon animal personality stereotype' rule is real for mutants that establishes an interesting insight to Marx's quality of moral fiber.

That was Suule that said hard no to drawing him or anything Marx related. Quite frankly I don't blame him.

Despite how much I bitch about Endtown there's still enough in the lore and setting to keep my ass planted in what dwindling community remains so by all means man: share this wonderful place where more than 10 people actively discuss the comic, characters, lore, and share/make content.

Hehehe, bad puns aside I'm glad he's taking off so well, he's very enthusiastic for being what amounts to a post apocalypse Nazi. But some people in life are optimists, though not all of them are as tonally deaf like Kirbee is.

Sounds like a lame holiday if that's the case. 'Haha we didn't participate in the civil war!' despite Neitherland essentially encompassing the original 13 colonies which would make them quintessential America. Traitors.

I swear I remember it coming up before on /co/, but all I can find on Desu is mention that Aaron had a custom font at one point but lost it in an HDD failure.

The different font gives your comic a bit of a different "voice" than Aaron's. If you want to try your best to imitate the comic changing the text seems like it would go a long way. But if you want to make you comic feel more independent from the original work or you feel like changing the text now would be pointless, you could just keep it the same.

The scheduling and workload honestly isn't too bad for me, it's more like busywork since I only have to draw four panels at a time. I cut up the work in a day by day basis too. I'll jam out rough sketches and dialogue the day a previous update releases, the next I tighten everything down with the lineart. It's either the second day or release day I do the value shading and touchups before release and then the cycle starts again.

Working on a program for drawing with a tablet and everything makes the work easier than ink and paint and scanning but there is definitely a loss of that specific look that comes from that method. Doesn't help much that you get an artistic disconnect with a tablet you can't see the work you're drawing with except on a screen you can't directly draw on.

I've been saving for a Cintiq to alleive that problem since I'm fairly passionate about becoming a storyboard artist someday, but it's an expensive piece of hardware to buy. I'm making the best out of a Monoprice art tablet I bought in 2012.

I've kind of been pulling this comic out of my ass and out of an amalgamation of jokes I had lying around, so it has really been by the seat of my pants. Breaking from my usual "however many panels I feel like" to the four panels has been a bit of a challenge but it makes me structure the joke more. I originally tried to make it in the four square boxes like Endtown and what CA is doing right now but I gave up on that. Work is entering it's busy season, so I was a bit overwhelmed but I've found myself getting into a bit of a groove with just having to do the four panels.

Thank you, it'll be worth it when I finally reach that goal. For now it's just me and my piddly little tablet but I make it work. Probably the best 50$ I spent honestly.

I feel like writing is very easy but that is probably because I've been writing for fun since I was 13. I'm 25 now so that's already a decade of hobbyist experience. I take some adages to heart, Pixar left a very good list to follow. Aaron I think could follow number 2 more closely but that's my critique on that. I work on Number 7 because they're right that endings can be very difficult; you can figure out beginnings and middles easier once you have that mapped out. My ending for this mini fancomic already is sitting on my hard drive, in fact I've parsed out what's going to happen in each update so I pace myself accordingly.

One important thing I knew as a writer than I bring over to my method of art is that nothing is too precious, no matter what idea you like. I already threw out something in the 4th update I didn't like to set the mood better for what I'm trying to show. You have to really be sensitive to how characters, actions, and situations read. That all comes from experience but it also helps to really understand and feel the characters you're writing for too, otherwise they'll never come out feeling genuine to the audience.

>>10265859
Thank you PA! I feel your art had a lot of appeal and heart to it that I can't really capture in mine, not to mention your great sense of humor. I'm a bit jealous of your unfettered freedom desu, you can really do a lot and have fun with it and it shows.

>>10266093
I've seen that around before, it's a list of remarkably astute points. Similarly I've recently seen some more generic writing advice (with added humor), much of which I think is applicable in this context, and especially in terms of planning out comic stories.

Are you planning to show us the stuff that was discarded on the way once your comic has been completed?

Would either or both of you mind sharing some of your non-Endtown influences?

Thank you. I've been loving your comics and the well thought out critiques you've been giving the comic and the humor you add. When you posted your first .gif comic it kind of blew my mind. I keep stressing about the timing in my comic and here you made one that's animated that makes the reader enjoy the joke and the punchline as it's supposed to be delivered. I've been meaning to do a comic on the Topsiders but you've delivered more than I could do justice and the whole reveal/joke is one of them is a mutant, but I already blew that in another comic.

>>10267174
Thank you too. There's nothing I have fully thought out, I just have a bunch of ideas that float around in the back of my head. Drawing here has let me put a lot of the dumb jokes and ideas that I have floating around on paper.
>>
>>10267174
Usually with text dialogue I end up deleting the layer they were on but I can tell you guys tomorrow what I originally wrote versus what the finished product was. For art, I already posted a bit of my process already; the sketch lines are almost always in that blue colored pencil look. It mimics how I draw irl; prismacolor col-erase photoblue. It's a pencil that *doesn't* scan on any scanner, so you essentially can draw out your underdrawing, ink it, then scan and it'll come out with just the inking. Best pencil, highly recommend. There's really no purpose to it on my program than habit.

For non-Endtown influences? I've been a big fan of Disney cartoons for ages and for comics one can do no better than Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes.

Friday update is here from me. I swear I redid these panels at least four times and I still wasn't happy about them, mostly because I had to reuse an angle from the previous comic. I felt like the comic jumped too much without it and needed the neutral transmission between panels to get a better flow but it still was difficult.

Still it was either keep fussing over an imperfect souffle or get it out of the kitchen on time. I opted for the latter but I think it's a point of contention for me to git gud and not get hung up on panel compositions by having more in my bag of tricks.

Anyway, for this reveal the reason 50% of the dialogue of last update was chopped was because originally the PT unit could communicate. I decided after the first draft that I didn't like that since it took away a lot of the mystery and intrigue to what happened, and as well considered it didn't make sense for what actually happened with this mystery crew.

Thank you, next few updates should be fun.

In the meantime we have a weekend ahead of us so how about a GIMP tutorial? I'll go by what I have to help out my fallow Endtown enthusiasts, or art enthusiasts, whichever come first.

First thing's first, get the program and definitely look into getting the GIMP extension pack! It comes with a lot of useful stuff, including more save file options, filter effects, brushes and more. It really pumps up vanilla GIMP and gives you a lot of fun tools to work with!

Right now I have the program open to my Terri drawing I did earlier. I'm gonna use her for some basic examples for things that can be done on here.

Program plugins aside, let's start with something easy but VERY important. For the basics of basics, let's go over layers.

When you open an image in GIMP it automatically is placed on its own layer. For this tutorial, this would be Terri's lineart. Programs run on layers which work like an image sandwich you can constantly stack, with higher layers on the foreground and lower layers on the list 'underneath' those. This means art done on a higher later will usually sit over work you do if it's on a lower layer.

Let's look at an example of that. I'll select 'New Layer' which is circled in red here.

When you click on adding a new layer you'll get a popup asking what sort of layer you want to make. You can adjust the size and fill of the layer you're placing. For simplicity's sake, let's go with 'transparent'. This will make your new layer 'see through' and free for you to draw on or adjust to your heart's content.

Hey CA! I do love what you're doing with the comic. If you want, I can hook you up with an old version of OC4.5 I've ceased using since some kind soul got me OC6. I do use GIMP for texturing but it's a pain in a but to do shit in it.

OC4 is pretty damn good for line stuff and relatively stable unless you do 5000x5000 canvases like me.

You also should look into Manga Studio or Clip Art Studio if you want to unleash your full potential.

Keep up the good work

Your new layer will automatically pop up ABOVE the layer you were originally on. For us, this would be Terri's lineart layer. Make sure the layer is highlighted, it means it's selected and you're working on that particular layer.

DO NOT lose track of what layer you're drawing or working on! Mistakes are made this way! Costly soul crushing mistakes!

Let's try putting some color on Terri now that we have a layer to draw on.

Your color picker is below. There are a bunch of different ways you can pick colors. Here you can drag the line on the spectrum for your hue and drag the target inside the box for the saturation you want. It'll show in the box at the bottom and even give you a code for the color itself. Useful if you ever need to get down to a specific shade.

Thanks Suule but do you mean this? I have Clip Paint Pro EX version with the animation program and oodles of illustration options, as well as DAUB brushes. This tutorial is more for PA who has GIMP but could use pointers with how to use it. It's a great first program and I stand by that.
>>
>>10315458

Ah I didn't notice that it was aimed at PA, was working on some commission so I've glanced over the posts.

I started with OC1.1 and stuck with the line, and I don't really hold GIMP in that high regard unless it's texturing which it is retardely good at (And I don't have to use PS), well if PA is interested then I can drop the package here.

In your toolbox dock you have a bunch of options but lets pretend the only ones you have to pick right now are the paintbrush and the eraser. Both are fairly straightforward but there are submenus like opacity, brush style, size, angle, etc.

To avoid getting you overwhelmed, just focus on brush size. You can adjust brush sizes using the keyboard shortcut [ (smaller) or ] (larger). One you get your brush to a size you like, you can paint on the new layer you made.

Well shit now the brown is gone.

A lot of lineart won't be transparent which makes coloring something like a magic trick. How can you fill the white space? The paint bucket tool? No, god no, never do that.

Thankfully computer programs themselves are magic! Let's move the layer back up top and try my favorite trick!

On your layer dock there is a segment that says 'Normal' with a dropdown box selectable. Click this box and select the option that says 'Multiply'. Your layer now will cover your lineart without covering the lines! Her nose is there, the color is there, and you have a way to work around that white space without pulling yourself through a knot!

If your lineart is done on a transparent layer you can just draw on layers beneath it to get the same effect, it all depends on where your lineart comes from. For someone who scans in their art, or uses picture, this method is *really* useful and unobtrusive.

We need two more things to learn and I should be done so bear with me, I'll do it in one more post.

You can delete layers by selecting the desired layer you want to trash and clicking the trash can button located in this image. If you make basic mistakes you don't have to worry about deleting everything and starting over! CTRL-Z will undo an action and can be done multiple times if you need to step back two or three spaces from where you are.

Finally, if you want to save select the 'file' option and choose your poison. You can select a vanilla save, which saves as the file you opened, or Save As, which saves in specific GIMP formats. Export As is my preferred save type since I have more options for save files under that but again it's up to you as the artist what you want to save.

And that's that for today! Tomorrow I'll run through how to adjust color levels; very useful for scans and photographed art when transitioning to lineart!

From what I see, you guys would probably like Krita.

That's fair my dude, you do you after all. I don't have much original stuff rattling around in my head currently so this is keeping me busy art-wise. Better than nothing and it makes this wait between updates from Aaron much shorter.

>>10316646
I've checked out Krita before and it does look interesting, though I'm solidly on my Clip Paint program as my main go. My real problem is really tightening from sketch to line and using the vector layers more often. Everything else the program does amazingly well so I have no faults aimed for it.

It's not the program that makes a good artist (but it can make an artist's life a lot easier!). Same goes with drawing mediums, be it paper pen and scanner, tablet, or Cintiq. Some things help but it's always possible to do good work with time, patience, and know-how.

My comic is going to be a little later than usual. Just writing the text now.

>Still it was either keep fussing over an imperfect souffle or get it out of the kitchen on time. I opted for the latter but I think it's a point of contention for me to git gud and not get hung up on panel compositions by having more in my bag of tricks.
When I started doing my comic I got really hung up on paneling my comic like Endtown. With the lazy ass way I've been making comics makes this a real bitch. But when you started posting your comic I figured I should get over that I try just fitting my content into four panels as well as try a comic regular schedule.

Also I love how the fourth panel of your last comic and the third panel your new comic work so well together.

>I decided after the first draft that I didn't like that since it took away a lot of the mystery and intrigue to what happened
I'm glad you went this route. I'm really enjoying the mystery and the tension that's building.

>PA is interested then I can drop the package here.
I really appreciate that you're willing to help me out by giving me some software but (I look like a dumb ass here) I don't even know what OC is. (I tried looking it up in many context here but all that showed up was the television show...). I've got a few programs installed that I try to fart around in (GIMP, Fire Alpaca, and Inkscape) but I don't have a tablet so I don't know how much it will help me.

>>10316480
I know Penny is the possum. Is Bev the poodle or am I confusing that with another character? And do you have any other characters with names (in this comic)? (And does that horse girl riding the eat beast have a name/place in the comic or was he just for shits and giggles?)

>>10316646
I'll take a look.

God damn, that's some solid advice.

I think Mana is a spaniel. Bev is based on a woman from the scene where rats start shooting people. She used to be called Beth until we found out about Aaron's ex-wife.

Terri: Delivery Girl, eh?

And that explains a lot about Work Placement Bunny...

>I don't even know what OC is
I think, from the context, that it's OpenCanvas.

>job in delivery
Hoo hoo, it's only a matter of time before she regrets THAT decision.

I have no idea what OC is either. OpenCanvas maybe? I think I heard about it once but I don't know a lot of people who use it. It's usually SAI, Photoshop, Clip Paint for paid programs. GIMP's for people looking for a free program to play in. If you learn how the basics work in it you can work it with pretty much anything in an upgrade.

>OpenCanvas.
Thank you. I felt like an idiot every time I searched no matter the context I ended up with the TV show.

You guys guess the joke I left out. I couldn't remember/find Fry's line about becoming a delivery boy (again) so I left if out. It seems like a good seed to start another story line. (I've got one more strip to go (give or take) before I'm finished with this.) Thank you for the critiques and enjoying what I put out.

Don't worry she's in the file for future appearances and/or maid outfit drawings.

In that particular three panel strip no, the comic had other characters in it, yeah. The horse gal's actually an import that I sort of shuffle from place to place. I came up with her (and her name is in reference to) after seeing the video for the Metalocalypse song, Thunderhorse.

Here you go then. I don't have a working copy of SAI laying around, I might get it for you from one of my friends. Seems to be better for lineart in general. Opencanvas have no stabilization crutch but in general its brushes and options are nice. Do save very often cause I recall having frequent crashes with OC4 after 3-4 hours of work
