While I personally don't like the comic either, I think the whole "appropriating characters into an empty, souless orgy" argument is a bit dull, at least concerning these types of comics. Would it be nice if in a lot of smut and porn Nick and Judy were "in-character"? Sure, I would enjoy it more. But this is porn without the goal of having any semblance of a serious story, it is purely fetish fuel of watching Nick and Judy get fucked which makes it very apparent within the first few pages.

If there was anything I would point out it would be that, within the comic itself, Judy isn't consistent, going from shy girl put off from all the cocks to immediately getting double fucked. Made me pause and go "What?" That writing put me off more than Nick and Judy being "out of character".

While this argument might seem hypocritical considering the shit we give Borba's comic and other such works that have Nick and Judy deviate drastically from how they act in the movie, I would like to think there is a difference between "Hey, this is a super serious story about a super serious subject and how WildeHopps would accurately react in this situation!" and "Hey, want to see the fox and rabbit either fuck or get fucked?"

I can't think of many good fics that haven't already been mentioned; most common would be Guardian Blue, Partners by SkyeLansing, Quid Pro Quo.

"Born to be Wilde" is a fic that isn't talked about much, and one I think is underrated. It has plenty of tense moments (like Nick having to arrest Finnick pretty early in the story), some hilarious and badass scenes, and avoids quite a few cliches and tropes. Even better is that it doesn't focus on a WildeHopps romance; Nick and Judy clearly care about each other a lot but it is ambiguous, and is shown through their interactions rather than taking center stage of the story. It does tend to focus more on Nick, as the story is more about him and his past, but Judy has gotten plenty of spotlight too.

I find talking about fics that are currently in progress is sometimes hard, as stories that look like they will be good or at least decent can suddenly drop the ball (Noots, Roses are Red and Violence is Cool), making it hard to care about them.

Stoutwell is about a raccoon cop (Seth Stoutwell) at the ZPD. He is from Tundratown.
It is set after Nick becomes a cop.
The characters from the film are all present, however they do not play an enormous role in the plot (except for the importance of the presence of Nick, since Seth has a (well explained) phobia of foxes), but they have active roles.
Very interesting, the plot advances chapter after chapter, especially in the second case, interesting worldbuilding and citations to the threads.

Evergreen is set in the Zistopia AU. However Nick is in Bunnyburrow, where the Hopps family was able to to tamper with his collar, to keep it green. They have to keep it a secret from Judy though, since she is very strict about enforcing the rules of Zootopia and she will arrest Nick on the spot if she knows about that.

So confirmed Jack Savage became Nick Wilde as Zootopia turned from a spy movie to a detective movie. Jack Savage didn't sound right in a city setting where animals were going savage, so it turned into Jack Wilde, and because of Jack and the bean stalk movie, they changed it to Nick Wilde.

Part of me kind of understands why Judy would be like this; there is no real winning in the situation for her either. She knows that it is wrong, but it is hard to go against the one thing you have wanted to do your whole life and find out that it is corrupt, that it hurts innocents. So she kind of has to dig in and accept it, "the law is the law" after all, and how can the law be wrong?

On the other hand, I feel like this makes her not Judy. Judy, even in the glimpses of prototopia, realized how wrong the collars were and, once she became friends with Nick, wanted to get rid of them. Judy is all about making the world a better place, even if she isn't a part of the ZPD. There would have to be either heavy trauma or indoctrination for Judy to lose that part of her character.

I feel like this is one of the problem I feel with some fanfics portrayal of Judy. Not even saying just protopia, regular work also puts Judy randomly going from "making the world a better place" and "upholding the law/propelling her career". I don't know why the latter became such a popular way to write her considering the only reason I cared about her on the movie was because of the former. I never quite got why people tend to write Nick and Judy like that either. While not fitting exactly into those stereotypes, they tend to make Nick into the joking, lazy cop who doesn't do his job properly, and Judy into the "by the books" super cop. In the movie they both were well versed in regulations and laws but they both also tended to bend it to their needs, especially Judy who acts like the ends justify the means. Nick is definitely not lazy, considering that his hustles tend to make him run around the whole entire city and was able to keep pace with Judy pretty well.
