An interesting question that Comic made:

Well, to be honest it's more about the zootopia fandom and it's shipping isn't it? As you guys also pointed out, the setup could've worked with many other 2 characters of many fandoms that are NOT officially together but they are very close and the fandom shipps them, like let's say "Bolt and Mittens".

What may make it Zoot are Nick and Judy and the idea I got from ToyStory, that toys have some sort of mental imprint on their own backstory and character motivation and personality of those they are based on. So I aimed to make them "in character", yet they are aware that they are not the same Nick and Judy as the ones in the movie.

Nick is slick but somewhat broken, who deep down desires someone to trust and love him, and Judy being the joyful, positive person who is still deep down a curious youngster.

The most conflicting part about it even for me is the fact that THIS Nick and THIS Judy have never met before, but since they both have this imprint on it that they are suppose to be friends, they can't help but to be drawn to eachother. It kinda gives off a "predetermined" vibe, that Judy and Nick figures are made for eachother, and they both feel incomplete without the other. And seeing how the fandom interprets this connection somewhat escalates this feeling of need into lust, "corrupting" them.

So yeah, in a short this green isn't mainly aimed to be a Zootopia story, but is heavily inspired by us the zootopia fandom.

Drama and tension here comes from the case they are working on and internal ZPD politics, their relation is only getting stronger as story progresses. It's actually one of the best examples of them working well together as partners on the force and a couple figuring their relationship out for the first time.
