You know, I think both have always existed at the same time. People simply have trouble acknowledge nuance, especially in a small group that bands together around a common identity. But on here, I've heard stories about disgusting gay furry orgie pits that seemed to exist in the same period described as a supposed golden age. And, as you say, Chakats being inserted into the Star Trek fandom also happened during that time. Christ, the Trek fandom has some real chestnuts of its own, come to think of it.

Yeah, one of the things that got me into furry stuff is their exoticness. Not in how they look, but how they act, and their culture, and this is only enhanced when a human in the story is seeing these things. A guy who was considered an alpha male meeting a female hyena who controls her pack. Bird people who live in tree cities that cannot be navigated without flight.

I also like the idea of humans being considered exotic. The idea that a trait common amongst humans is considered attractive is interesting. If you asked a human what they thought of flat faces, you would just get a weird look, but if you were to ask something like a horse you would get a more interesting answer.

As the author of two ongoing greens, it's been one of my greatest pains to have them on hiatus while I work on something larger. Makeup is supposed to enhance traits that are already there.
Use too much and it crosses over into clown territory.
Now, I'm not afraid of clowns, but there is kind of uncanny valley between 'proper makeup' and 'clown makeup' that screams "UNNATURAL!" at me and pictures like the ones I linked do that to me.

Or just go about it in a more sensible way, for example let's say that CRISPR really takes off but most governments ban invasive genetic modifications on humans so people just continue modifying animals in various ways.
While studying genes relating to intelligence it's discovered that you can make animals with very rudementary intellect and speech capabilities which eventually leads to a grey market for talking pets for rich people.
