Fuck...

So I just want a few good Transformers, and I figure 3rd Party stuff is probably my best bet. I want a Lio Convoy/Leo Prime, Optimus Prime, Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime and an Ultra Magnus. Ideally in the same scale. Any suggestions? I haven't dipped my foot into the 3rd party pool before but I'm tired of Hasbro's offerings disappointing me.

How's the shoulders on yours? The few reviews out there say he's a floppy motherfucker.
>>
>>6380177
>>6380156

His shoulders were a little loose but were fixed by taking ten seconds to quarter turn some screws to personal taste. Nothing was floppy though, even out of the box.
>>
>>6380190

Play around with it for a bit, move the arms up and down a lot. Does it loosen up again or does it stay tight?

>>
>>6380149
For Leo Prime there is pretty much only Perfect Effects Leonidas.

While I understand the initial release was plagued with problems, hopefully they will be resolved with the upcoming Origin version of the figure which was recently announced.

For Optimus it really depends on the style of Prime you want. There are at least a dozen if not more for you to choose from.

Hot Rod has too IDW incarnations coming down the line but not much else outside of an upgrade kit for the classics version.

Ultra Magnus pretty much only has one 3p figure that isn't an add on for classics Prime. Unfortunately it was put out by Keith's Fantasy Club which is notoriously shit.

If this was on the same scale as Reformatted and Cross Dimension I'd be all over it but I just don't need a masterpiece scale of this design.

$100 for Thunder Erebus is pretty reasonable though.

If they don't show anything at TFCon next month it's probably safe to assume they're done.
>>
>>6380711
We don't know if Function X is going to continue or not. Let alone if we're ever going to see a fixed headmaster for their Highbrow so he can swap with the others. They've been rather quiet ever since they released their dinogirls. Their Snarl was finished the last time we saw it, so they're probably waiting until TFCon to drop preorders and show off new things. If not, they may do what they did last time and take a year or so break to reevaluate themselves.

They ship same day so its out the door and in the truck at around 5pm or so. Typically takes 3 days to to get to places if they use USPS. FedEx is a few days longer.
>>
>>6379839
Man, this is amazing. I love how all the typical guys got made so companies are branching into other series.
>>
>>6380149

Well for Hot Rod and Magnus the MPs aren't that bad. Yeah they have a few issues but pretty much no figure is 100% perfect, 3rd party or official.

Like that other anon said there are sooooo many Optimus figs to choose from.
>>
>>6379839

After seeing the color pics I pre-ordered instantly. I'm not even that attached to Galaxy Force but this looks so fucking good.
>>
>>6380308

Is FT still making Hoodlum (Hot Rod)? I wondered if that was still happening after the new MP version.

I'm very tempted on the MP because everyone says the flat chest looks better in-hand, but FT usually knocks stuff out of the park.....

>>
>>6380305
Oh, this guy looks awesome... but knowing that the first run was plagued with problems makes me nervous cause of the price tag.

As for Prime, I just want a cool Prime, I'm not picky on what? I just want something maybe Masterpiece size, but that doesn't look like the G1 style or Movie design since I have those. I just want something a bit more unique, but I don't know where to start looking. I see a ton of 3rd party Primes on BBTS but don't know what if any are good.

Downbeat or coolsville? I just got downbeat in the mail today and he's fucking awesome but the latter is growing on me with the molded details. The head still looks too long though

Archenemy is fucking awesome, so I don't see why the G2 Prime would be any different. I personally don't think it's worth the $120 asking price solely because of the simplistic transformation. However, it's extremely sturdy and looks great in both modes. If you're a fan of the character, then it's worth it. If you're just looking to impulse buy a figure, I'd look elsewhere.
>>
>>6381051
Oh, there's a previous version of it in Nemesis/Black Convoy colors? I don't mind it having a simple transformation, I really love the G2 Prime design. I'm not looking to buy impulsively, so I'm just asking as many questions as I can.

I just want a cool Prime for my collection, and G2 has always been one of my favorite designs. It was one of the few toys I couldn't ever find as a kid so it's like "the one that got away"
>>
>>6380906
they shared a designer with MT at one time iirc
>>
>>6381055
If that's the case, you definitely won't be disappointed. I've been a huge Scourge fan since RID, and I absolutely love Archenemy despite the simple transformation.

Apparently, Fans Hobby is also going to be releasing an MP scaled G2 Tank Megatron to go along with Prime, so there's that.
>>
>>6381058
Wait really? Oh, then yeah I'm probably gonna buy this Prime if there's gonna be a Tank Megs to pose with him. Thanks, man. Might be my birthday present to myself (Bdays tomorrow)

Fanshobby has been pretty solid so far. There have been some issues with the line, though. Their Not-Nemesis on some copies had too tight of a mushroom peg on one of the arms, which led to it twisting right off. My Not-Repugnus personally had an issue with it's left arm on the screw that held it to the ratchet.

In my case contacting them on Facebook got a replacement arm sent to me ASAP along with a video on how to change out the arm assembly. I'm definitely a fan of their design style so far, I've got to say, and want to pick up more.

So what are some things specific 3rd party companies are known for?

BadCube: Great poseability, no paint, hour-long transformations
KFC: HANDS
X-Transbots: Great cartoon accuracy, shitty transformations
UniqueToys: long torsos
>>
>>6381928
Master Made: We want the SD/Gokin/Transformers crossover audience
Fans Hobby: PURE BEEF
Cassy Sark: lines, one face, one double hinge joint
Maketoys/Fansproject: We like them shortstacks with the hands that has two fingers slightly extended
i Gear: We thought Cassy Sark was a good idea
MMC: We thought Cassy Sark was a good idea
KFC: We thought Cassy Sark was a good idea
>>
>>6381928
Fanshobby: BEEEEEEEEEEF
Maketoys: Heavily stylized, ridiculously complex, but pure engineering porn and very good quality.
TFC: Good sculpting, weird colour choices, quality varies from really good to absolute shite.
>>
>>6381928

Perfect Effect: Loads of paint, tons of dynamic sculptwork, shitty alt modes and Q/C

Though that seems to be changing.
>>
>>6381916

This is like 14 or 15" before the God Bomber boots get added. He won't be the size of titans or the 20" combiners but he'll still be fuckhueg.
>>
>>6381928
KFC: Shit everything, and somehow still being alive despite having the absolute worst releases of any 3P outside of Omnigonix.
MMC: Quality, and mold reuse that'd make a Hasbro bean counter jerk himself to completion every night.
IF: Quality, Legends figures, and wasted potential for choosing Dynobots over Dinobots
Fanshobby: THICC
TFC: KFC-lite. May be reforming themselves with the Poseidon release by turning out a product that isn't shit.
Planet X: Hey, remember WFC? That was awesome, right?
Perfect Effects: Good combiner addons, shit tier everything else.
>>
>>6381928
>Maketoys
Ugly overengineered anime shit that people eat up anyway

>MMC

also they keep hiring cassy sark despite his awful shit

>Fanstoys
MPs that are worse than the official ones but people pretend otherwise
>>
>>6381975
Holy shit, how expensive is this going to be?
>>
>>6382118

I don't know, but their other THICCbots have been a pretty "reasonable" $125 for MP-sized stuff. So I'd guess probably around $180-200.
>>
>>6382107

Fans Toys does a much better job at creating a bot that looks good from all angles than Takara, who is content to make a front focused bot clearly assembled from ten thousand panels from all other angles.

Also they can cover a figure in paint and have it not disintegrate upon contact.
>>
>>6382230
All angles except the face. Worse face sculpts in the game.
>>
>>6382118

He's a bot the size of Carnifex (I think bigger doing some eyeballing with similar sized figures) and much more massive and complex. 200 USD at least.

>>6382234

That hasn't been true since... reflector? WeirdWolf, Galvatron, Sludge, all prototypes shown, and Omega Supreme have extremely sharp sculpts.
>>
Is Striker Noir worth the asking price? Mainly want it for the bot mode and the alt mode seems like a pain in the ass.
>>
>>6382247

Yeah. He's a pretty cool action figure with a bunch of accessories.

>>
>>6382298
Okay, unpopular opinion time. I think Hexatron, Feral Rex, and Carnifex look kind of shit due to residual Sarkiness. The parallel lines, generic hands, random spikey parts, and spindly thighs/hips are a turn off for me.
This goes to anything Sark has touched, but those three are just the ones people universally seem to praise.

And honestly Maketoys' offering is just as dated. Battle Tanker system has plenty of flaws and fragility issues with the trailer's connection to the main body.

You're projecting your own brand loyalty on me. I own several figures from multitude of brands. I can say having observed you autistically screeching about muh takara you've outed yourself as a fragile brand loyalist. FT isn't perfect, but they offer great alternatives to the Masterpiece line that aren't shit looking jigsaw puzzles with flaking paint. If you can deal with the shedding paint and front heavy design then they can make well engineered toys that are very g1 accurate for better or for worse.

How's the X2 Toys upgrade kit for CW Ultra Magnus?
I see it adds hand swivels
>>
>>6383153
It's a good kit.

The faceswap head is nice to have, as is the storage compartment for them that doubles as a filler for his back. My only complaint about that is that an entirely new head with more articulation would have been nicer, but I can cope. The thigh-hole fillers are nice too.

The replacement forearms/hands are probably the best part of the kit, the articulation is great to have and it can actually hold things well. The gun it comes with is too heavy though and your UM will probably have trouble holding it up if it has weak shoulder joints. Also the new colored forearms look better in robot mode but kind of weird in vehicle mode, which can be something to consider if you like leaving your CW UM in vehicle mode.

I don't really care much for the ankle/foot upgrades, though. The replacement shins are tacky as fuck and needed to use the new feet, and if you want to use the new feet you'll need to either cut off some plastic panels that fill gaps in the vehicle mode or just remove the stock feet entirely so everything can close together properly

It's definitely worth getting, but if you're only interested in it for the ankles, you should consider that the tacky shins are required to use them and that you'll need to cut plastic to close up his legs properly. I ended up not bothering with the ankle upgrades since the stock feet are decent enough already.
>>
>>6383324
I intended to get that together with the Fansproject white mini-Prime for the ultimate Ultra Magnus experience
I may even get Takara CW UM but I don't know if better paint is worth 20 monies more

He's probably my second favorite after their Ultra Magnus. He has a lot of character and has great poseability. He does indeed have wrist swivels as well as a waist and ball jointed ankles. His wings can be a bit fiddly tabbing in in jet mode, but once they're in they're secure.

its not like gps (it doesnt deteriorate any further from how it comes) but the plastic they used in the first release is too delicate for the transformation. supposedly the 2nd and 3rd release are fine but I cant remember if we ever got solid confirmation on that
that being said mine is still in one piece and is a 1st run release so I think it varies all over the place

I'm really curious if Tyrantron is good. I really want an idw inspired megs toy, and it ALMOST hits that niche perfectly, but they decided to make him a space/drill jet instead of a tank, but even so I'm really tempted.
>>
>>6384358
My Asterisk release is pretty fine, but I could see the elbows being a fragile point, or a few particular spots during transformation. Considering how lightweight he is, I'm surprised he's even remotely sturdy.
>>
>>6383873
Soul Reaper is great, the other Phase Sixers are awesome as well. Overlord even has an ab crunch. You really can't go wrong with any of their releases. Their earlier ones have some complaints from people but I think they are full of character and still great.

The loadout for their pieces are top notch as well, tons of weapons.

I've been wanting to know this too. It's a real shame because I wanted them to finish the Headmasters and get Minerva (and hopefully the other Headmaster Jrs.) out as well, but alas, it seems it won't happen now.

I only have the first three Function X figures, unfortunately, because international shipping and exchange rates just fuck me in the ass to get these figures, so it's just not feasible to buy them, but I DO want them.

I never really got the appeal of Fansproject though, personally. I've had a decent amount of their figures and the only ones that ever really impressed me (Steelcore aside, who I'd argue hasn't aged very well) are the Function X Headmasters (which, if rumours are to be believed, is good because friggin' Jizai designed them).

Are you high? They're fine. Not perfect but they're good toys. Heck, at least their Brainstorm doesn't look like a fucking twig.

...the other points are correct though. Their whole line of Dinobots was just shit, and their Stunticons can go suck a dick.

Nice Dinoforce shells, overpriced as fuck, ugly individual figures, etc.

>>
>>6382857
It would be kinda nice, yeah.

Do we know anything about the quality of this figure yet? I haven't really been following it since the announcement. It looks pretty good - I'm just hoping it IS good.

Perfect Effect have made quite good stuff lately, haven't they? I haven't really followed third-party for a few years now.

I do wish they had used pins or pegs for the wheels instead of screws. Third-party stuff seems to use a TON of screws, and it can look really ghastly sometimes.

Yeah, it's not that great. Feels dated, not especially fun remembering how the pieces go in vehicle mode, etc. I sold mine just because I realized I had no real desire to play with or own it, and I'd rather have the money it goes for.
>>
>>6382390
I had Feral Rex and frankly, whilst I thought they were pretty well-made individual figures, I just didn't like it overall. It was cumbersome, difficult to pose or even move without parts full off or over (the wings, the waist plate, the sword), and it was just... not fun, beyond playing with one or two of the figures when you didn't have the whole set.

All the spikes and sharp parts aren't fun either. Sometimes I think US toy safety standards actually IMPROVE Transformers toys, especially after all my experiences with third-party stuff that goes against those toy safety standards to do "interesting" and "unique" things.

Plus Feral Rex and the Feralcons are just REALLY bulky and don't have great ankles.

Overall, I like how they look but I just haven't been that impressed with most Mastermind stuff. I still want to get Knight Morpher Commander just because of what it is though, but it's kind of hard to get these days, and you really need to make sure you get the second release that's fixed.

I can't believe people are still buying MMC stuff. All their designs look like complete shit. Same about ToyWorld.
>>
>>6386920
I think the vehicle modes are pretty decent representations. Not sure I really get the hate for them.
>>
>>6386901
SXS might just be the winner for me.

I normally like MMC stuff but the proportions on theirs are just awkward with his big chest and thick legs, which also look super square in silhouette. I also think they botched the chest big time with how flat it is. It's also super fucking busy, even for your usual overly-greebled third party affair. SXS just looks a lot cleaner, better proportions, and feels more dynamic, plus the chest isn't an awkward flat slab.

The only thing MMC's offering does better is the alt mode since SXS's looks like absolute garbage but to be entirely fair, both offerings look stupid in alt mode and it's largely the fault of his MTMTE alt mode being a hot mess in the first place. MMC's just does a better job of recreating that alt mode in plastic but it doesn't mean a whole lot when the alt mode was stupid to begin with.
>>
>>6386901
SXS looks like Hot Rod literally jumped out of the comic. MMC just looks like a cheap imitation of Hot Rod. I don't care about alt modes because it's all cybertronian made up trash.
>>
>>6387063
>cybertronian made up trash

KEK why is this everyone's hated feature of IDW bots? Wing looks great in both modes but people still hate his 'cybertronion' alt form because it doesn't resemble anything. Does everything have to be earth-based?

There's a whole lotabout him that feels slightly off, but those shoulders are straight up horrible. I know MMC struggles with shoulders sometimes, but I honestly don't know what they were thinking with these.

I'd have loved for them to do a pipes, but he was always pretty minor and died way too early.

People have made scratch built Whirls that looked pretty good and transformed. Im sure if one of the better 3rd parties gave it a shot they could do it but I think they're worried about it selling.

You know, it could work as a papercraft of some kind

If you're talking about that shapeways kit, yeah it looked alright, but also like it was made of toothpicks and was about to break if you looked at it funny. I guess I could still change the dumb-looking head in Susanoo and learn to live with the fat thighs, the only issues I have with it.
>>
>>6387815
No there was one that actually transformed and the guy was using gunpla stuff for the joints and sintra? for the panels. No idea how you do that from just a pile of parts but it was pretty impressive, I'm having trouble finding the pictures now however.

>>
>>6387914
Hasbro didn't use glue. That's the plasticizer fucking things up chemically.
>>
Anyone gonna make a new thread?

Are there any good G1 Slag figures? The FP Slag is kinda shit.

Also, I tried putting on the fixed thigh clips for FT Soar, but one of them the hole for the pin is just slightly too small. REEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>6388160
How does this plasticizer thing work? The threads are stil fine, it's only the normal plastic parts in contact with the rubber that are a little warped.
>>
>>6388324
More rubbery plastics or ones that are poor quality start to break down after awhile. Plasticizer is the stuff that bonds the plastic together and keeps it flexible and resilient; when it starts to break down the plastic becomes less flexible and crumbles or if it's rubbery will shrink down and fall apart.
The especially bad thing is plasticizer leaking from one thing can ruin other plastics that are too close to it like on your figure. If you remove the bad parts it will help but the damage will already be done to any warped areas. If you love the figure go ahead and remove those pieces so it won't eat up the rest of it.

And as a note to those not familiar with this, you can tell when a toy is beginning to leak plasticizers because it will feel sticky to the touch even if you wash it. If its in a display case you'll notice a hazy fog on the glass around it. Some figures also smell like ammonia but that varies from plastic type to plastic type.

Mine is totally dry, though; that's why I have no idea if the warping is new or was there from the beginning, I never checked.
>>
>>6388401
I bought a used Animated Soundwave and his roof was like this. I was real pissed the guy sent me a nasty figure, now I know what was wrong. The doorwings on my Classics Silverstreak did this as well
>>
>>6388534
>Mine is totally dry, though
It's hard to tell without actually seeing it in person but try and move the treads around, it sounds like its already leaked a good deal of plasticizer and is at the crumbly/fragile stage. If it's still flexible and seems otherwise normal I would think it's probably ok but keep an eye on it.
