For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

So I left the vote up, and both lines won. So:

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Is the RG Mk-II as much of a bitch as this fucker was? Or did me 4 years ago just make a bad purchase.
>>
>>6358532
RG Zeta is notorious for being a grenade. Mk. II is one of the more sturdy RGs.

Somewhat on-topic, if I was to paint the Zeta RG, wouldn't that make the thing a bit tighter? It's not like it'll be in more than one pose for the majority of it's shelf life anyways.

I've never tried putting an actual cloth cape on a HG before, but I've made poseable capes for other figures.

Cape on Shining Gundam or no cape?

You can get God Hands on Amazon.

Supposedly Gundam Planet cutters are about as good as God Hands too.

- Not a fan of the polka dots or measles or whatever is going on there
- The decals seem sorta grimdark tryhard
- Why does he have a dick on his thigh
- Other than that, it's okay, kind of safe and boring though. Monotone/greyscale with one color accent (particularly an overused one like that shade of blue) is pretty much the de-facto recipe for safe and boring.

Love the purple on the decal. The skulls are pretty flashy and ridiculous, in a good way.
Try using an off-shade of black so the light catches it better and another off-shade of white so it doesn't look /too/ pale. Probably something pearl or bone-colored. Other than that, I love it.

I'm curious what you're going for with the dots, a polka-dot pattern or more of a splotch-y paint thing like this?
>>
>>6358675
>>6358676
The dots are just testing to see if another shade of grey/black will help. I am most likely going to keep the shoulder emblem. I wanted to go with a death squad feel for this Gundam. Now that I am looking at it again, the shield seems a little try hard.

Can I get a r8 or just some Suggestions? I'm considering omitting the white part altogether and going all orange.
>>
>>6359207
What is that, an Arios Schwalbe Graze? I dig it but I'd make the tips of the feet orange too and color the blades on the crotch inlet gray to break that up some.
>>
What are your guys steps for building a kit? Do you follow along with the instructions and only clip off the pieces for what pages of the instructions you're on? Do you clip them all off at once and clean them up then go to the instructions?
>>
>>6359224
I've done it both ways and I prefer the former. Typically I'll skip the head until last and just cut parts for one page at a time for the body and limbs, sand and assemble those then move on. Next is a snapfit followed by lining and seam welding, then I topcoat whenever I feel like doing it. Cleaning everything at once was immensely satisfying at the end but felt like a total grindfest, and that was on a really simple HG.
>>
>>6359213
>>6359213
Well, there's a group build coming up on /m/, and it may be state/country based. If that's the case, I was either going to use my state colors or out flag colors. I'm also debating making my entry a 3 suit team since my state is split into 3 sections.

Alternatively, I'm thinking navy with some accents.

Working on my first modern HG for a commission. These IBO kits are pretty nice, but I can see why the Barbatos is pretty cheap. I wouldn't mind the stickers if it didn't mean masking for painting would be a pain in some parts like the toes and similar places. For anyone who has painted and seam weld the Lupus, any tips? I'm gonna be thinking of that today because some parts look obnoxious to seam weld when it could've been easily worked around in the molding phase, like the forearms. But for some reason, they did a great job on the head and decided to get lazy elsewhere.
>>
>>6359224
Nowadays I knock out the arms and legs first, cause the repetition bogs me down. Then I can finish the build having fun with the torso and head.
>>
>>6359224
I do the last one. I'm pretty sure I've built enough kits to recognize what goes where so I snip everything out, clean them, and group them by the letter of their runner and just go hunting while I follow the instructions. I hate picking up, snipping, putting the tray down, sand, repeat so this way I can skip most of the times I have to pick up/put down the runners. As in order of build, I go weapons>backpack>limbs>torso>head to go from least interesting to most and just like to top off with the head, assembling in a similar manner from bottom up.
>>
>>6359224

Take all of the pieces for a certain page or part of the kit, clean and assemble.
If there are pieces that are mirrored and are hard to tell at a glance which is which, I might remove them from the big runner along with the number so that it's easy to tell when it's time to assemble.
>>
Dendrobium fag again. Decided to go customer paint job on the Dendrobium and picked up some chrome electroplating powder as I'm gonna go dark chrome blue instead of the white normal finish. Will still use white for highlighted pieces and black for the missile pods.

>chrome electroplating powder
you realize your pic related was actually electroplated? it is not powder

electroplating powder looks good on small bits like blades ans thrusters

electroplating powder on large parts will need perfect and I mean PERFECT gloss black base over the entire part, any small imperfections will be very visible and your application of the powder will also need to be perfect

I do not think you realize what you are getting into
>>
>>6359699
It's great kit. Holds up well compared to modern kits.
>>
>>6359224
I build in the following order: feet, legs, hips, torso, backpacks if any, arms, all hand held accessories, and finally the head.
This way I get to pose the kit standing up as it is built, and avoid burnout when the mech is finished but backpacks and accessories kinda bores me.
>>
>>6359699
A good kit, but like most of HG CCA it needs a ton of detail painting for the thrusters.

I'm considering on getting some nippers, found on amazon spain some Xuron 270, and 170. No idea what's the exact difference between each models, but there is a price difference. All good shit, but starting off with MGs/RGs is risky since they're probably going to look shit if they're one of your first kits. Play with a couple of HGs first, you'll probably like the look of the other GMs (perhaps an RGM Type C or a Nemo?). I love me some Zeon suits like Zaku and Marasai but they aren't exactly "mobile" looking.

I'd recommend getting a smaller version of the RX78 to mess around with before you jump on the PG.
All the grades of it are fantastic, even the HG is fantastic, as long as you get the latest one.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I've only built 2 gunpla before ordering that batch; the 3.0 MG RX-78-2, and the MG Musha mk.2, both of which were really fun and easy enough to build for me. The only tool I needed was a pair of cheap nippers for cleanly shearing off nubs. I don't use stickers and if/when I paint I'll just disassemble the kits and/mask carefully.
I try to buy kits that look good unpainted in case I never do get around to spraying them.
Decided to build a hand from the 1/60 just to appreciate how big it will be. He says hello!
Gotta say, this nearly 20 year old kit kinda shows its age. The detail doesn't feel as sharp as it could be and there are minor seem lines on parts. My nub trimming is flush but it still shows white stress from being cut, if you look closely you can see the seem lines on the fingers. Oh well, I don't demand supreme perfection, I know it's gonna look awesome once fully built!

Say for example, right now I'm working on a EW Heavyarms. Say I'm working on the head.

What I do is take the bagged pieces necessary for just the head and do a test snapfit to see what the finished product looks like before I do any gluing.

I'll then disassemble the snapfit, alligator clamp the pieces and hit them with the necessary colors I'm looking for before going back and reassembling and gluing the pieces back down and hiding any seams.

Its not exact science, but it works
>>
>>6361823
Ok I was gonna defend you but

Isn't that counterproductive when you have to sand out the excess and apply putty to kill a seam?

Well there's your problem bud. You read the guide in the OP? You shouldn't really cut flush with nippers because they squeeze on the plastic as they cut, especially the cheap ones.
Either pick up a hobby knife/scalpel to slice off the nubs, or get some sanding sticks to file them until they're flush.
I started the exact same way and was really frustrated about why I was getting white spots on my kits until I read the OP.

It's the 6th and I don't see the rerelease anywhere in Kotobukiya's online store.
>>
>>6361983
I'm not a fan of using a scalpel as it too easily carves a chunk out of the plastic. And I'm not interested in paying for really expensive nippers as I don't see how they would produce much different results unless they can alter the basic laws of physics. Two blades meeting to cut plastic under pressure are always going to result in some degree of crushing before the slice occurs.

Anyway, most nub marks are easily removed with a number of methods, all of which are faster and less frustrating (for me) than using a scalpel. I admit though, on the right surface a knife can work wonders without much risk of gouging. The nippers are just so fast and satisfying though. I don't like a build to take longer than a couple of weeks while watching TV in the evenings.
>>
>>6362016
Get some files tho, small grain. It will help a lot more and be less likely to take of a chunk like the scalpel.
>>
>>6362017
I do have some sanding sticks, just never bothered to try them out. Is there a particular file you might recommend? Thanks
>>
>>6362016
>Two blades meeting to cut plastic under pressure are always going to result in some degree of crushing before the slice occurs.
Godhands are single blade, one side cuts and the other side is flat and essentially holds the piece in place/serves as a cutting surface. They're basically a scalpel in nipper form, in theory.

Some anons claim they're overrated but mine work fantastically in that regard.

Dude, the whole THIN YOUR PAINT meme is predominately 40k and citadel paints. It is a massive shame and really effing head scratcher that frigging JewDubs does not sell their own acrylic thinner since it does help get better results then just water. Fortunately vallejo thinner works with it from what I hear.

Also a lot of Fa/tg/uys I recall just dip their brush into water then putting it into the paint and that is enough water for thinning. But of course that is for a tiny miniature with less surface to paint.

in short, THIN YOUR PAINTS

You need to get both sets or the combined set if you want to make the robot forms. The bike forms the legs.

if you buy either of the 04 sets, they come with both bike and truck in the same colors. The stand alone 05 and 06 sets are both black and gold. So you are unlikely to run into any mismatched color issues.

If any future gigantic arms follow this same pattern then here is how it works for numbering
The first number for a GA wave is the combined set and will include both of the other two wave members as well as a few extra items for some FAGs. The first one was 01, this is 04 and if this continues then Gigantic Arms 07 will be the next combined item.

Start with one labelled "HG" or "high grade", they're for easy baby mode. Get nippers or sprue cutters and a small metal file. Those are the absolute basics for building a gunpla kit, don't let anyone meme on you and say you need a hobby knife.
>>

I used to be a hobby knife purist until I gashed my thumb open like a big dumb retard. Ever since I just use a file and that removes nubs better. Plus you're less likely to gouge pieces.

Buy a cheap $10 HG before you take this on. You will fuck up on your first attempt, everyone does. But by fucking up on a cheap HG you'll learn what to do and what not to do, and better prepare yourself for making that MG look good.

Hey guys, asking here because I think you guys probably know a lot about paints. I painted up a ThreeA piece that I'm pretty sure is PVC (APTK hair piece) with Tamiya lacquer rattlecans. I then topcoated with TS-80. It seemed fine, everything was going good, but a few months down the line it's gone really sticky and the paint even has dents/gouges in it from contact with other toys. Is there a bad reaction between PVC and lacquer I should know about? And if I strip it and start over, what would be a better (and hopefully more durable) paint to use this time around?

The early review looks okay, but expect detail painting and maybe having to glue some parts for stability best case scenario. Worst case scenario is its a limp fragile mess that stresses and falls apart if you look at it funny (assuming its parts even fit together correctly). Third party gunpla is very hit or miss.

Pretty much repeating others. All the surface detail gets lost if you do [almost] the whole thing in the same color. If the "gold" particles of that paint cause the surface to have a texture then you'll need to gloss/semi-gloss topcoat it first, else whatever you use to line it with will seep/smudge through the texture and really muck the whole thing up.

Dry-transfers are easy to tell because they're two separate sheets, one that has the decal and another that's just backing so it doesn't get messed up. Regular stickers, by which I'm assuming you mean clear-backed, are pretty much always printed on green paper.

Burning gundam actual has nothing in its design based on the god gundam other than both being martial arts units. Its an original scratchbuild by Sei based on a kitbash he made as a prototype which is the lead of the new OVA later this year.

Denial is based on Cathedral gundam, an original scratchbuild by the second Meijin.

Winning gundam is also an original design and scratchbuild.

I've got the old ass MKII Titans MG from like 1998 I think? and it was alright. I like the chunkiness of it. There's something about the older MGs that I like.
I'm considering the RG too since the line is fantastic, so I might get it.
I can't really explain why I don't like it. The side skirts are the worst offender, I think, followed by the shoulders (just the tops), kneepads, ankles and the cockpit area. Perhaps it's just the rounded areas?
I agree that the head is one of the best, and I like the shield and rifle, but everything just feels like the standard RX78 with some extra pieces tacked on to make it look more complex. I get that's pretty much what it is, but just feels uninspired.
I'm not talking about FB btw, just the stock suit.
>>
>>6363617
Alright if your okey with the old mg's then thats fine.
I guess the "chunkiness" is the result of katoki not handling any of the decision making.
Also, i guess you and i have different feelings for the gp01 since i like the curve areas since it sets it apart from the rest of the gundams.
>>
>>6363606
A common complaint I hear about the RG though is that has stability issues. Apparrantly it is something that all the core fighter and transformation RGs suffer from.

>>6363617
I think that is part of the charm of the GP01. I see it as the RX78 if drawn in the 90s. The Strike Gundam I see in a similar vein, the RX78 drawn in the 00s. They overall have the same form as the original gundam but embody all the common mecha design themes of their decade. They are showcasing the changeing trends of the medium in a very basic and simple vessel that we all know.

Can I paint an ABS inner frame using a primer like mr surfacer 1200 as long as I do light coats or will it melt the piece anyway?
>>
>>6362767
It might be plasticizer leaking and lifting the paint. But in general PVC doesnt react significantly to anything, to the point that it's considered and unpaintable plastic, though there are some paints that claim to chemically bind with it. But they're most industrial stuff like buoy paints. Not anymore dangerous than lacquer, especially since it's brush only but not very fine in quality

New to Gunpla, have a few 1/144 gundams built. I have a ton of acrylics from miniature painting, but I'm wondering how well will acrylics work on unprimed plastic if it's mostly just detail work like the eyes? Is clear primer a thing?
