For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

He was just caught up being wingman for Gourai

Did you get the REnewal version? I'm interested to see if they included the updated balljoint part for the ankle, and if the improved architect frame actually did anything for the kit.
>>
>>6253253
I don’t know which version i got really. It was supposed to be my first frame arm. But i doubt it's going to arrive since the seller just automatically gave me a refund when i asked about it, and there's no postage tracking.

The part that bothers me is the idea of a lost and lonely plamo out there, crushed under boxes or fallen behind a crate. Never to be built..
>>
Is Bandai selling 1/100 IBO frames standalone yet? I've been staying away from the Gusion set because it annoys the shit out of me that you can only build/display one.

Knew I'd catch flak for that. I just don't like how tiny its torso is in comparison to its long legs and high-up hips. I also....I dunno, I've never really felt like the design fit in with the rest of the Zeta MS. It feels a little...different somehow.

Didnt like the dark blue. Changing it up and I'm much happier with the color.
That being said, Vallejo is crap. Can't seem to thin it well, doesn't want to spray right and just overall super annoying to work with over tamiya and mr color. The only consolation is that it smells like cotton candy.
>>
>>6253689
>Vallejo is crap
Wut? What vallejo paint are you using? Because I swear that the model color that I'm using is the best thing ever.
>>
>>6253638
I've been sitting on building my Tallgeese for like a year because I can't decide whether I want to leave all the yellow or paint it black like the lineart.
>>
>>6253692
Vallejo air. Super thick, has to be thinned down with only their thinner from what i can tell. Thing to paint ratio is about 70:30 in favor of the thinner. I hopped it was a bad bottle but I've run several colors and they all do the same thing.
>>
>>6253749
I've found that their model colour hand brushes well, but I can see why it wouldn't necessarily airbrush well. When it dries, it can be almost rubbery sometimes
>>
>>6253752
Yeah, but all the reviews I've seen for it is "oh it's perfect, just poor it right into your airbrush and it's so smooth!" Yeah, bs.
>>
>>6253753
To be fair, people's experience with it is going to differ depending on air pressure, humidity, what model airbrush you're using, etc

>>
>>6253767

depends

can you find out what has been in previous boxes? the site seems poorly laid out and i can't find that info

impossible to judge without it
>>
>>6253767
No, you fool. It's $30 for $40 worth of stuff, that's a shit deal for a subscription box. And subscription boxes are a shit deal to begin with, they're mostly a way for companies to foist off their unwanted/unsellable merch onto suckers. You can bet you're gonna get some real shelfwarmers here. Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave out EX Standards.

Plus, who wants to pay for just random-ass colors of paint?
>>
>>6253758
True, and if it works for them, more power to them. I'm just gonna avoid the crap like the plague and keep to my tamiya for now.
>>
>>6253784
I mean last month they gave out MG V2 gundam...I dunno man. Should I bite the bullet?

>>
>>6253438
I want to go that actually. I'm want to get a Talgeese or a GM Sniper if I can find one cheap.

One of my biggest toy regrets is I saw a complete HG Heavyarms Custom from Endless Waltz in a flea shop and passed because I didn't have that much money on me at the time.
>>
>>6253849
You can pick up MG Tallgeese for $37 on Amazon right now.
>>
About to start my first PG (Unicorn), anything I should know before I start?

I've made plenty of HG's and MG's, but I feel like jumping to PG is a pretty big leap comparatively.
>>
>>6253854
I got mine at a convetion because I was so set on buying a kit and I love the tallgeese
It's 13€ cheaper on amazon and it even has prime

Moral of the story is always check online before buying, even if it looks cheap
>>
>>6253856
If you've built MGs or RGs, then you should have a decent idea of what to expect - the parts separation is a lot more intricate, but the bigger scale means that even these proportionally-tiny pieces are the same size as the smaller parts on a MG; there's just more of them. Hell, RGs are pretty much miniature PGs, so they're good practice.

What's the advantages of megami devices when Fags exist?

Fags seem more detailed and with more accessories for a mostly similar pricepoint

What would make you buy one rather than the other if you like the designs equally?
>>
>>6253987
Oh come on, that a ridiculously easy fix.
>>
>>6253987
Easy fix. Drill out the pegs and replace them with metal rods.
>>
>>6253987
>>6253986
How did it break?
If it's supposed to be a fixed piece some glue should fix it right back

You should work on your nub removal though. Snip not too close to the piece, cut with hobby knife and sand the rest

Is it weird for me that I am hoping and actually want it to be a kit for this Shiden Unicorn + Zaku?
>>
>>6254093
It'll probably get a P-Bandai.
>>
>>6254093
I'd rather have the Riden-Go for the shoulder parts.
>>
>>6254095
Damn that would cost me, but I'll still get it.
>>
>>6254096
It'll probably also be a P-Bandai.

Actually neither will probably ever get kits, as their custom faceplates are in one of the option packs, so it's likely they'll get the same treatment the Landman Rodi did.
>>
>>6253990
>if you like the designs equally?
I don't though. None of the FAG designs have appealed to me yet, but I like everything Megami Device has put out. Simple as that.
>>
>>6254093
The facemask horn comes with an option set but you might need to rip that shoulder shield off from a Zaku.
>>
>>6253990
MDs are more articulated, but that's really about it. Just don't think too much about it and buy whatever your dick desires

I like fags myself, but these two sure are nice
>>
>>6254186

http://www.bandaionline.com/model/gundam/

The postage took like 2-3 months to get to Australia but the prices are really good. I've bought four p-bandai kits from them and they all got here before genteikits.
>>
>>6253749
Get model color, it's much better and it airbrushes perfectly (atleast it does for me).

I brush at around 12-14 PSI and use a 50:50 paint to thinner ratio and that way it comes out great.
>>
>>6253990
I don't think they're entirely targeting the same people and so they're not in competition. MDs seem to be more aimed at the shinki crowd while FAGs are more aimed at the mecha crowd who also happen to like cute girls. Obviously there will be some overlap but that's just a bonus for Kotobukiya.
>>
>>6254230
nippon yasan looks cheaper?
>>
>>6253638

>>
>Sold away paints, airbrush and compressor

I feel a little empty now. But I know I don't have the patience to fully paint a kit after it was with me for 2 years.

Time to start handpainting details. At least vallejo won't smell as strong as lacquer.

I kinda miss the smell of lacquer thi...oh wait that was the brain damage talking.
>>
>>6253638
Man I can't wait to start on my Tallgeese III, one day I'll buy a MG Tallgeese though just because the original is pure sex.
>>
>>6254254
Oh nice. They ship to Australia now. Thanks anon.
>>
Is there a place for brush painting with Gunpla? Obviously airbrushing is a goddamn necessity for painting kits but do hand brushes have applications too?
>>
>>6254293
Intricate details (like the sinanju's emblems and sleeves), Pilot Figures, Weathering
>>
>>6254293

It's possible to handbrush for the base coat as well. It just takes time.
>>
What's the point in higher quality side cutters and not using scissors or any other alternative when you're not even cutting flush to the plastic and are relying on either sand paper or a hobby knife to do the fine work?
>>
>>6254364
Cutting with the wrong tools or shitty cutters will twist the frame, even ever so slightly, which will leave stress marks in the plastic even after you use a knife and sanding to remove the leftover nub. It can also potentially break smaller and more delicate pieces.
>>
>>6254267
Not a single kit? Well, airbrushing can be pretty troublesome if you dont have a dedicated workspace for it.

I do love me some lacquer thinners as well
>>
>>6254364

A pair of scissors? That barely even cut them off the runners back when I tried it at the start.

>>6254267

At least vallejo paints smell sort of good

Yeah this has been my go to place for custom inspiration. But pinterest is actually fucking perfect for that. Just search gunpla custom, and start adding interesting things to folders. Then pinterest figures out what you like and creates a feed. It's dope.

I've been thinking a lot about an idea i had for a custom acguy/dom mashup. I'd like to make an acguy head open up like a mouth along the horizontal eye axis. I don't have the expertise required yet, but i love the idea of an acguy suddenly biting into an opponent like a shark.

I was thinking dom legs plus a mixed dom acguy torso? Plus longer arms and maybe a smaller second set of arms from a hazel custom or even a petit on the chest.

Testors works fine. It's one of the few matte varnishes I've used that hasn't given me problems with frosting and I exclusively paint with acrylics and it hasn't done anything to them. I always give paint time to properly cure beforehand.

It's not my current preference for matte varnishing though because it's not a 100% flat finish. It's more like a very very slight satin.

I used proxyrabbitjapan and put it in through two requests/orders.

My total from P-Bandai was 24,644 yen including local shipping. 8,700 yen for EMS shipping. 300y for handling, 300y for consolidating everything, and about 3000y for transaction/bank and service fees.

The retail value of the items + EMS is around $290 (a little more with paypal conversion rates)
The total was about $340 due to paypal conversion rates. So local shipping, bank fees, and middleman costs was around 50 bucks, not too bad.

IIRC I tried Nippon yasan and their EMS estimate for 3 WD GM Sniper IIs was like $80 or $90 alone, which is why I tried proxyrabbit. I think even Gentei had fairly high EMS compared to 8700 yen for all 4MG boxes and 3 (basically) HGUC boxes.

I'm seriously considering stripping the paint off the armor at this point. Can't seem to lay down a smooth coat to save my life. It's almost done however. I'm gonna try one more gloss coat (yeah two coats of gloss on the dark blue, not that it's made much difference) apply decals, then flat coat it.

>>6255527
Honestly, I got like fucking 30 or 40 in my backlog. I don't know how it got this bad, I was never a backlog guy. Finding out that kits were real cheap on Amazon with Prime shipping was the death of me honestly. It was just wayyyy too easy to pick them up on a whim.

>>6256272
Speaking of which, anyone got a good Gunpla news site? Both Gundamguy and Gunjap seem dead in the water.
>>
>>6256304
The gundam markers have a bad habit of being overly "goopy". When I realized the gold wasn't going to work because of that, I went to remove it, only to find that the plastic had absorbed the gold into the top layer even after wiping down with acetone
>>
>>6256316
That's actually really cool. You basically got a nice gold plastic that can't be scratched or chipped now. I might just do this to my HGUC Hyaku Shiki.

Also, since you used acetone, I'm sorta wondering if that had a hand in it...being that it does melt plastic and all. Maybe it helped infuse the gold into the plastic even while you were wiping?
>>
>>6256327
It's possible the acetone melted the bottom layer of the gold INTO the plastic. Either way, it leaves it with a better gold finish that doesn't look like it was glopped on
>>
>>6255738
I appreciate the offer, but my backlog is rather large as well. Those kits come with dry transfer decals. You don't really need paint but as the other anon suggested read the guide and look into dry decal application prior to use them. You will at least need some topcoat to protect the decals after placement. You could also just use the stickers. I do recommend trimming the edges of them a bit but they have a tendency to peal.

But looking at the pics the base color seems to be a tad darker and the dry decals don't seem to cover the whole surface and I've watched some videos were they prepainted it and did the exhaust vents before they put the decals. I swear I will read the guide but I just need a yes/no answer for this one and I suspect it was answered there. I see them using airbrushes but is there an alternative to that? Like cans or something? I might invest in one of those some time down the line but for the time being I feel pretty cheap.

>>6258495
Paint pigments usually arent dense enough for good coverage on the first go especially on dark bases with colours like white, red, yellow. You can try spraying the side of something dark (like a wheelie bin) with a red spray can and you'll see what I mean.

That is why you prime in a light colour first, which also adds other benefits. You can reduce the number of light coats you need for something like yellow from 5 to 2. Including the first layer of primer, you reduce the total number of coats, making the paint look thinner and more tight fitting around the model edges and details.
>>
>>6258626
Yeah, I had a good prime with a can of tamiya grey primer. Didnt go on too thick, all the details were still present, no pooling or anything. It went to shit when I went full retard with the model masters navy blue. It behaved a lot different than the tamiya, and a poor lighting setup made noticing that difficult. If nothing else, it was a learning experience. I expected to fuck up ny first paintjob, now I get to learn to fix a fucked up paintjob. Thanks for the tips btw.

As the cross 'redirects' energy against those parts because of its angles it slowly wears on the coating there.
Over time this could lead to the shield weakening around there or the center, so proper maintenance is necessary.
Just imagine it got so bad that it gave way one day and the cross got blasted through the shield one day because the parts directly surrounding it couldn't take it anymore.

Yeah.

I kind of want to see it happen in an animation actually. But you'd need a setting where something could get THAT worn down.

I'm in SE Asia and this isn't the case at all. Basically if more people sell at a higher price and most consumers don't even realize, meaning your beloved casuals, it means other physical stores will start selling as high of a price. You can find gunpla at any mall toy stores that sell toys almost exclusively for kids but gunpla prices are still best at hobby shops or online sellers.
>>
How do you tell if the paint is adhering well to the plastic? I am hand-brushing with vallejo, when I run my nails with some force on the dried part, it just comes off.

Primer.

Use it.
>>
>>6258922
Any other way? I am just painting the small details, primer seems like an overkill considering those that I can find are the spray types.

You can get brush on primer. Otherwise no. The entire point of primer is to make the paint stick to surfaces it otherwise wouldn't, and gunpla plastic is one of those kind of surfaces for most paints.
>>
>>6258917

Vallejo is very easily scratched before it is cured, once it has cured it can still be scrathed off but not as easily. Wait like 48 hours according to their site before doing anything that could scratch off the paint, and don't paint a spot that will be subject to joints moving etc.

You do realize that most of burgerland doesn't have access to In-N-Out, right? But apparently two seconds of Googling brings up results for a single In-N-Out in Tokyo.

Dammit, now I want a 2x2.

How jew are Bandai going to be about Legend gundam since most of it is the same mould?

P-Bandai for Legend or are they saving that for Nix-Providence?

Is this legitimately how those crosses work? Would the rest of the shield break before the cross?

If so I'm definitely stealing that idea for something I'm writing/planning.

Tamiya Sprays (and Primers) plus Army Painter Sprays.
>>
>>6258993
Let reply, but I can't confirm or deny it.

At the very least the cross should be as tough as the rest of the shield, but the angles likely help to deflect some of the energy of a beam blast as opposed to taking it straight-on like those worn down bits circled in >>6258748

But it is possible that as a decoration it's not meant to be as tough as the shield that's under it IF that red part continues underneath it.

See it's ALSO a possibility that the shield is made segmented, with the cross extending to a deeper layer than the red--the cross being a core or protrusion of the shield's 'skeleton'.
The logic of this being that if the shield has segments then it's easier to repair if a part is significantly damaged, rather than scrapping the whole thing.

Happy theory-crafting and writing, Anon.

Alclad and Mr. color for Lacquers.

Same. But I've got even more unopened.

This is the lion's share.

I haven't bought a new kit in a long long time just because I've been whittlin' away at this backlog.

The OBI 1/100s are pretty cool. They just seem to all have pretty crappy feet, and the detail isn't at a master grade level all the time. They are good looking and tend to come with some cool accessories, though.
>>
>>6259003
>>6259013
Damn, i was hoping you were alluding to some official lore.

On a side note, the cardigan style shield that move around on spindly brackets bother me, wouldn't they be useless against anything physical? They could block a beam sure, but anything with mass would rip the bracket off.
>>
>>6259047
Space magic alloys

Also yes they look spindly and weak. Really useful for custom stuff tho
>>
>>6259023
That's a pretty low markup for a mall import store.
>>
>>6259047
>>6259057
Well the spindly shield arms on Thunderbolt suits are meant only to block beams/projectiles and space debris. I would imagine that the Cardigan's arms would have the same purpose were it not just a BF suit and thus only exist to look cool.

Scuff the surface with sand paper, gives paint much better grip than on smooth, pressure moulded plastic. Dont go scuffing too much though, a light rub with 600 grit and no more will make paint adhere much better

While I'm cynical at online retailers as I hear a lot of issue from them.

Barbatos is aesthetically hideous
>>
>>6259111
By any chance, do you like most protag Gundams? Cause I find most of them very boring and/or ugly. Barbatos was the first one I actually found interesting and visually appealing in a long time.

I only mean 3rd form though. 6th is hideous to me, Lupus is okay, and Rex is just ridiculous looking.

Jesus, I thought that, while masking would be a bigger pain, at least I'd have less parts to paint but Stylet has almost as many parts to prep as the MG Kampfer, with like only 10 less skewers used. This is much closer to an MG than an HG. At least the amount of paint used should be way less.

The guy who posted the WIP here: I'm doing grey primer on it then a white base on top before doing any skin coloring because yeah, fuck seam lines, although after priming, the fixed leg turned out that I didn't fill in the seam properly. I probably won't fix that since it's not how I'll display it, but future note to self: don't just use cement. Always use putty as well.

Just that it will be prethinned for airbrushing like vallejo air and that its supposed to be more durable to prevent scratching when reposing and handling.

Considering how happy a lot of local shops I've visited here in the states are with how well gunpla sells I can see them being interested in stocking it if they can push it as paint for gunpla.
>>
>>6258933
Tamiya primer is not brush on primer. Its meant to be thinned with their lacquer thinner and airbrushed.
>>
>>6259284
>>6259270
Making putty from the flesh colored runners and filling seams with that is what most of the Nips are doing for FAG flesh parts.
>>

That looks pretty interesting. I hope they start stocking that stateside eventually so I can try it out. After using Alclad once, not having to thin is a huge plus to me.

I did an MG as my first kit. Granted I did a few No Grades and 1 HG 1/100 kit when I was in middle school but I don't count those. Just punched the prices off the runner. Gross. I didn't have too many issues with the MG I built. But RGs. I'm still afraid to give those a try. If he insists on doing a higher quality kit try to get him to do an MG.

RX 78? if he MUST do an RG then advise him to do the MkII instead. It has a lot of the design that people like in the RX78, and is consistently considered the absolutely most stable of all the RGs to date. RX78 is on the other hand considered a hand grenade.
>>
>>6259834

Has anyone tried thinning Tamiya Liquid Surfacer with generic lacquer thinner or Mr. Leveling Thinner? I just ran out of Tamiya lacquer thinner, but have plenty of generic and Gunze laying around. If I could just use one of those (or maybe a mix of the two?) to thin the primer, I could get back to priming without having to wait a week for a bottle of the Tamiya stuff to arrive.
