My top edge Gourai is done. First thing I did after taking my photos was get her a base, even though I tightened the joint in her belly/abdomen it was really tricky to pose her without her upper body falling backwards and looking awkward.

Next time I'll add less shit to the back and shoulders.

Good, clean work, anon. And nice photos, too.
a 4th color, on the lights at her waist, sensor at her left shoulder, and maybe the radome might break up some of the 2-tone thing you have going, if you're inclined.

But honestly, it's plenty dynamic.

My autism would kill me for doing something like this.
>>
>>6245405

I had a really hard time coming up with which colour to use on the radome actually.

One thing I would do differently is to have fixed the seams in the arms, they are pretty bad.

>>6245406

At first I was going to go with the white/gray hair that the kit came with but decided I wanted to paint that as well. I considered orange hair as well (as you get 2 runners for the hair i could have done both and checked what I preferred) but decided to double down on the edge colours instead.

Well, I'm now living in a less dusty apartment at least (and a city with actual hobby stores, yay working abroad), maybe I could give painting a try even without having a veranda. As for the mods, I'm too afraid to ruin parts and am basically hamfisted.

I found adding a spinal support helps a lot with heavy backpacks.

If you wanted a more articulated backpack with wider spacing on the cannons, you could add a Flexible Arm B in there.

Are there exact colors for FAgirls specified anywhere? E.g. what's the exact color of Gourai's armor?

Although I'm not sure if it's even available in a spray can form, no airbrushing for me.
>>
>>6245471

Can always handbrush
>>
>>6245474
I don't like the end result judging by most handbrushed kits I've seen in these threads, I'd rather splurge on an airbrush if it ever comes to that.
>>
>>6245471
The exact mixes are listed in the manual, though they're in Japanese. Almost all the colors they use are Mr. Hobby, though a few are Gaianotes. Also they're in Japanese, but post pics of the color sheet here and I'm sure a fellow anon would be willing to translate.

One of the nice things about FAGs is that they're designed around custom work.
There's very little chopping and cutting involved, unless you're really going all out for something like Pic Related.
The Altiesen kit that>>6245448 uses is even a kotobukiya kit.
I MIGHT, if I were a gambling anon, even attest that you could basically abandon the custom at nearly any point, up to and including completion, and still have a mostly intact Altiesen and Stylet kit.
(give or take a horn or two.)
You would just have to settle for having a Stylet painted in Kyousuke's colors.
Tragic, I know.
>>
>>6245487
>You would just have to settle for having a Stylet painted in Kyousuke's colors.

You know, that actually sounds tempting.

Although, having an SRC Alteisen already, guess I wouldn't feel as guilty bastardizing a kit version eventually...
>>
>>6245260
What paint did you use?
>>
Anyone try there hand at making their own decals?

I'm looking at making my own faces/eyes for custom work and am not sure where to start.
>>
>>6245549

Metal: Tamiya TS-42 light gunmetal (spraycan)
Red: Vallejo model colour flat red (handbrushed)
Black: Vallejo game colour black (handbrushed)
Tamiya TS-80 flat on the red and black pieces (spraycan)
>>
>>6245560
Jesus, you hand-brushed that? How? Where are the brush strokes??
>>
>>6245565

They're there but a good flat coat hides most of it. Visible under really strong lighting but not so much in natural light or in my indoor lighting.

Honestly I thought the black would end up being terrible while I was painting but that black is pretty glossy so as soon as I flat coated it it looked fine.
>>
>>6245560
>handbrushed
Holy crap, I would never have thought.
>>
>>6245569
Did you use a retarder?
>>
>>6245577

I used the vallejo thinner, that's all.
>>
>>6245486
Looking at the manual now - actually I can read Japanese, I just haven't looked in the box ever since Gourai was released and forgot that I even had the manual - holy crap that's a lot of colors. I hope I can find something that looks close enough without mixing five paints per color...
>>
>>6245573
>>6245565
I don't know where this myth of 'handbrushing can never look good unless you are some master painter' came from. Its all a matter of the right brushes, thinned enough paint, and many thin layers. A spray of flat coat afters words not only seals protecting your coat but also hides whatever brush strokes are there.

You also have to realize that with HOW AMAZING photo taking technology has become these days, the photos make flaws far more noticable then to the naked eye.
>>
>>6245609
Did you use any primers?
>>
>>6245620

I'm the guy who did the gourai and yes, I used tamiya primer. Don't handbrush anything past small details without primer imo.
>>
>>6245609
Hmm, I just tried my hand at handpainting for the first time and I notice a lot of areas where the brush strokes are kind of obvious, at least when you get up close. Was my paint too thick? I used equal parts (by volume) thinner and Tamiya paint. Or will those be hidden by topcoat?
>>
>>6245629
depends on how noticeable the strokes are. Up close only should hide them fairly well, but note that I think of 'up close' as holding the figure in your hand holding it 1-2 feet away from your eyes.

Remember this only works with flat coat. gloss can actually make it more noticeable.
>>
>>6245426
While it's not an exact replica of >>6245448, if you wanted to kit out an FA Girl like Alteisen you could grab two Missile & Radome sets, an Impact Edge and one of the two different types of chainguns, and peg it all onto the girl of your choice with no issue at all. The only thing you'd be missing is the horn, and you could use one of the blades from the Edge for that if you wanted.
>>
>>6245629
>Tamiya Paint

There's your problem. They don't really work well for handbrushing applications.

In my experience only Vallejo works well for handbrushing if you dont want to go Enamel.
>>
>>6245660
Damn, I thought since it was acryllic it'd be ok. Still, the colors I'm using are kind of specific, and I don't think even exist for Vallejo, so I didn't have much of a choice this time around. I'll keep that in mind for next time tho.
>>
>>6245629
I didn't even notice you said Tamiya until >>6245660 brought it up. Yeah man, a bit impressive you even got it to not be noticeable unless up close. It is possible to hand paint tamiya, but they definitely are not well suited to it. Vallejo is what you go for for acryllics.

Also I have not yet used them and can't remember the name, but there is a new brand of acrylics out there that I have been hearing good things about.
>>
>>6245675
Mission Model paints, just found it again.
>>
>>6245657
Yeah, I think that's the wisest and least-hassle option in my case. Get a Stylet who reasonably looks like Alt as it is, more or less borrow >>6245448's color scheme and equip her with those MSGs. Thanks!
>>
>>6245757
No problem. If you want to be just a little more thorough, you can also get a Killer Beak to replace Stylet's backpack using just the two short wings. Attach the large wings to the sides of the missile packs and you'll have Alt Riese's folding winglets.

Not the anon you replied to, but thanks-- I was about to ask a similar question.

I sort of want to make a Chise inspired custom FAG from mashing Hresvelgr, Innocentia, and a Gundam Wing Zero for the wings. Not sure how I want to go about the arm canon, but Stylet's would be okay if it weren't short.

Or I may go with a custom lily with the added on wings and canon.

I'd end up doing it with a Killer Beak MSG and an Architect. Killer Beak provides the wings and rifle, use one of the Architect arms that's meant for connecting to regular FA arms and attach the rifle to it.

If you'd rather she wield the rifle instead of having it growing out of her arm, get a Killer Beak and a Handgun set and put them together like this. Jinrai's volunteered to demonstrate while her suit's in the shop.

>>6247100
Architect comes with them by default, yeah. They're the same as the MSG Impact Knuckle/Impact Edge, except they come with all three attachments instead of just two like the MSG sets do and the knuckle/edge parts come in a lighter gray plastic. The main piece and the pilebunker come in the standard dark gray.
>>

Miniguns are pretty much the easiest thing in the world to mod/build using brass/styrene tubes/rods.
>>
>>6247514
>>6246643
not to mention the sheer number of gatling/miniguns in existence in Plamo, there is always options.
>>
>>6246643
If you want a chaingun specifically, I think the MW20R Gatling Gun is the longest MSG gun available.
>>
>>6247595
Slight problem with that is if he wants to be as accurate as possible he will want a 4 barrel gatling. Only options kit I found with 4 barrels that isn't super stylized would be the Power Arms HGBC, but that is on the short side. Definitely plenty of kits out there with 4 barrel gatling but that can be pricey to sacrifice an entire kit for a gatling. Unless of course the person likes the kit and just resin casts the gatling so he has both the gatling and the full built kit.

Probably will be best to make them from scratch.

>>
>>6248279
Did you remove the backing paper?
>>
>>6248279

Did you:

-Remove the backing paper (surprising number of people who'd never used wet transfers before miss this)

-Wash the runners before building it or at least clean the surface (water alone is NOT enough in the case of Kotobukiya kits which have significant residue) before application

-Leave to dry after application and not fidget with it expecting it to stick instantly and then wonder why it came off

If it's a curved surface that you're having problems with try using Mr Mark Softer. If it's just not sticking try Mr Mark Setter.

Wanted to grab a couple of Tamiya paints for my Gourai, but the spray cans are 10+ eur each (more for special ones) and the acrylic paints are 6 eur... There's Vallejo acrylic for 3 eur, but how usable are they for airbrushing and as top coating? Or should I just handpaint at this point?
>>
>>6249092
import gaianotes
>>
>>6249100
>FAgirl colors
Now that's nice, even though they've only got flesh, black and gray.

But the same question stands then, can I use this brand for everything - airbrushing, topcoating, etc?
>>
>>6249102
Gaianotes can be used for airbrushing but I don't believe they make topcoats.

Tamiya is good for everything, as is Mr Colour and their topcoats. Just be warned that they're heavy on the thinner and Kotobukiya kits are pretty fragile to begin with.

Gundam paint is easier on the plastic.
>>
>>6249092
Vallejo is fine for airbrushing.
>>
>>6249092
>>6249176

Let me quickly point out that I have heard on a fairly often basis that Vallejo's Airbrush ready line of paints is not all that great. They all stated they got far better results just thinning down the normal Vallejo line.

But again, no actual experience airbrushing Vallejo, just repeating what I heard.
>>
>>6249208
From what I understood from casual browsing -
but I'm not sure - seems like their airbrush line still needs to be thinned somewhat, the paints are just using a different formula. They're sold in the same little 17ml bottles at least (3 euro per 17ml, jeez...).

Actually, looking at posts throughout the internet the opinions on Vallejo seem to be completely different everywhere, some say the normal Vallejo is shit with an airbrush (clogs, etc), some say both lines are fragile, many positive opinions too, I'm confused beyond hell to be honest.
>>
>>6249238
yeah, might be best not to worry about vallejo for air brushing, but again, no personal experience. It is definitely one of the best hand brushed acrylics you can get. Yeah it is a weak paint, more prone to scratching off then others, but it goes on very well. If going for airbrushing in general might be better off ignoring the weaker Vallejo since you don't have to be concerned over brush strokes.
>>
On the topic of Vallejo, it seems they're coming out with a new set of paints geared specifically for gunpla that they promise is more scratch-resistant than their previous lines - which have been reported somewhat scratch-prone according to 4chan and some forums. Should be a good option for FAgirls too once they're on sale.
>>
>>6249413

That's really nice. I still don't think I'll use acrylics on joints if I can avoid it though.
>>
>>6249419
>>6249413

Or wait, I guess it's only for airbrush? Meh
>>
Looks like they just announced two new sets of joints, tho personally I can't really figure out what I'd want to use them for.

I like that this one has something like 6 new ways to attach the freestyle bazooka to Gourai.

Also, it looks like a fantastic way to backmount basically anything to a FAG.
Including other FAGs, presumably.
>>
>>6249433
What couldn't you do with 3 cube joints?
If I'm reading the manifest at the bottom right, both of these come with at least 3 sets of every joint shown. 6, in some cases.

I use both their regular paints and their air paints and I don't think there's any noticeable difference between their "quality" really. Just different viscosities and the number of available colours. Vallejo has like half a dozen ranges anyway. There's game colour which is brighter, more fantasy colours mostly aimed at /tg/ type stuff and game air which is the thinner versions of those same type of colours (although in my experience the regular and air versions are not exact 1:1 matches in colour which I actually kind of like since there's some shades I like in the VGA range). Then there's model colour which is more realistic tones aimed at general model building and model air which is the thinner version. The VMC range is much bigger than the VMA range though so there's a lot more colours to choose from in the regular paint. Then there's Panzer Aces which I'm not 100% sure about, but I think it's just a bunch of the same paints as VMC but with names that make it more clear to military modellers what the colours are supposed to match up to. There's the Liquid Metal paints which are metallic paints that are alcohol based (which I definitely would not airbrush) and the Metal Colour range which are metallic paints aimed to compete with the more high end metallic paints while still being water based.

They work for me because I also do a lot of hand brushing on top of airbrushing and hate having to deal with lacquers but everyone is different I guess.

So just how bad is resin? Should I be wearing a face mask when I so much as play with it, or is it just when sanding and cutting? Should you not be handling it with open cuts or something?
>>

Thanks man. Gonna try topcoating my first MG and didn't want to fuck it up
>>
>>6249815
depends on what type it is. If it smells bad you need a respirator. Open cuts aren't going to be a problem. Wearing a face mask is a good idea. Respirator if you really want to be safe. You can get disposable 50-hour respirators for like 20 bucks, so it pays to be safe.
>>
>>6249815

You can't ship paint via air so you'd have to resort to the few stores that do sea/land shipping and wait for a few months, I guess. I'm not that guy, but that's pretty much the reason why I'm limited to Vallejo whether I want that or not, at least it can be sourced locally for tolerable prices.

What is it with Europe and Tamiya costing 6 eur per paint and 10-20 per spray can.

BD1 Gourai and BD2 Stylet look like they're built on the Innocentia frame, just with skirts added and the head swapped. They don't come with any armor parts, so they're only useful if you want to depict the two of them out of suit. They do also each come with one or two MSG kits packed in, but there's nothing special about those.

BD3 Baselard looks like she's just a palette swap of regular Baselard from blue to black plastic, with no other changes.
>>

>>
>>6251620
I haven't tried to replicate their exact colours but I can give you my tip for trying to find paint colours you want. Look through the swatches for the paint names and then google image search vallejo + "paint name" or vmc/vma/vgc/vga (depending on the range) + "paint name". There will usually be a page in there somewhere that gives you a better idea of what the paint looks like in use (just make sure you actually look at the pages the images come from to make sure the image you're seeing is actually that paint being used) than the default swatches. That's what I always do before buying new paint.

Now to decide if micro usb or regular usb would look better with them.

I'm more amused that if either of those stands buckles under the weight of the figure, you're looking at the hair breaking,

I, for one, prefer a figure you can play with.

Since she is the only one at the moment, guess it has to be my Bright Feather. She will probably be a favorite for a long time simply being my first shinki. Been planning on getting around to finding a Graprap to repaint to match her colors and give her some medical droid style arms. It is definitely much harder to upgrade and customize her while still fitting her theme compared to other Shinkis.

It's going to be oversized, since it's designed for a 3mm wrist peg. You'll need to use the Architect extra elbows to connect a regular Frame Arms forearm to your FAG. Pic related uses the Wild Hand.

Si I already have a normal Baselard built, lined and flat coated. Think I can combine that with Bunnylard to increase her arsenal?

I don't actually have the bunnylard yet, held off on purchasing it since I had the baselard already but if I can use that to upgrade bunnylard I might just get her.
>>
>>6253337
Baselard doesn't really come with any weapons to speak of other than the shield with two rifles, and Bunnylard already has two of that set plus her own rifle and weird swordish thing.

Get Bunnylard because you like her or have something you'd like to do with her. There's plenty of ways to beef her up with MSG kits if you think she's underarmed.

noticed a general push back against such builds for a couple of years now

>>
>>6254455
Basically what >>6254490 said.

Final reappearance can have a major impact on how well it performs in a competition, but the bulk of the points come from the amount and quality of skill put into a kit. The kit that is just nicely seam welded and painted is going to lose to the kit that in addition to being nicely seam welded and painted is also heavily modded, includes scratchbuilt parts, and is weathered because it displays a higher degree of difficulty.

>>
>>6254774
I'd say a black/off black (tire colour or a dark navy), because that's the actual color of spats. Matte or semi-gloss, but definitely not gloss.
>>
>>6254774
Either white bordered by black stripes on the top and bottom (as with her bra) or black bordered with white stripes on the top and bottom.
>>
>>6254803
>>6254842
>>6254847
I had this idea of doing black/ dark gray (her parts don't look straight black, do they?) and then sticking that shitty panty sticker on to so it looks like an accent rather than the sole thing covering her privates. Semi flat might be nice here as spandex/lucrative does have some shine. That might look good for all of her clothing, actually.
>>
>>6254854
innocentia doesn't have a panty sticker, it's molded on. You'll either be painting over it or sanding it off.
>>
>>6254858
Could always mask it.
>>
>>6254858
What? Why? That doesn't even make sense. Balls, guess I'll have to get created with masking or decide how lazy I want to be.
>>
>>6254864
Masking isn't that hard, especially with something mostly geometrical like that. If it's raised, you can just get some masking tape, trace around the outline with a toothpick or something, take the tape off, and cut the shape out. If it's not, use a piece of thin paper to trace the outline with a pencil and then use that as a template for the tape.

Weaons are almost as awesome as the girls who wield them, and since they're also a lot cheaper, I've bought more than I can attach to my girls. Is there some kind of... If you'll excuse the shitty pic and it being pretty WIP, here's something I started while waiting for my 1 dollar chink cables to get here.. I made a little 'tail adapter' for the 3mm hole since that looks a lot better than just having it come out her back. I can't decide if the male end of the plug is a bit too simplistic, or if the simple half oval design works well with the MD aesthetic.

On the bottom is a 3d printed 'bag carrier' I keep seeing on my etsy feed for some reason. Gave me an idea for a charging seat. The female end of the plug will be in the bottom hole and the top will have a 3mm hole for weapon/equipment storage. I'll try and design a little seat for the wider side without holes. I like it because you can put two seats back to back so if I recast and make a ton, it'll make a really cool and efficient barracks area, fitting the army building side of the line.

I'm also working on a nude MD body. Butt came out great but the breasts are a bit harder. I've been toying with making a AAA sized battery back with the leftover apoxie from working on that.

Any good places to get metric sized styrene bits? Having a devil of a time finding 3mm diameter styrene rods - they usually just come in 1/10 or 1/8 of an inch. I have some 3mm brass rods, but those are much harder to work with.
>>
>>6255167
The outer frame of the FA:G runners are 3mm, why not just use those?
>>
>>6254933
The Mechanical Chain Base R (A) has a bunch of 3mm holes on it you might be able to use.

Personally I'm probably going to use the upcoming Gigantic Arms that's a carrier truck to make a mobile weapons rack.
>>
>>6255174
Don't think I knew that, so that helps a good deal. I'd still like 5mm rectangle rods to make custom weapons more easily and consistently, but that's less of a need than exactly 3mm rods.
