What Magic the Gathering card would you like to see turned into a toy? And what sort of toy? I would guess action figure would be the choice of most people.

>>
It's such a broad sprawling franchise, the only thing that makes sense is the Planeswalkers and they're all boring as fuck.
>>
I really don't give much of a shit about anything published past 2001, and I really don't care about the Planeswalkers, it's a stupid mechanic and they all look like refugees from Deviantart. I would love a Magic line that stuck to the classics--Serra Angel, Juzam Djinn, Force of Nature, stuff like that. Basically that line that ReSaurus (I think?) was working on that was never released, but with modern sculpts and articulation. Artifacts and spells could be packed in as accessories--Serra could come with some Moxes, Juzam with a Chaos Orb, etc.

Obviously this will never happen since Magic is still an active, growing franchise, and old farts like me who stopped playing during the Bush administration are in the minority. But I still think those classic fantasy designs are much stronger than tryhard modern ones, and I think they would have appeal beyond the niche audience of Magic players (who probably can't afford to collect figures anyway, cards are expensive).
>>
>>6231942

Yeah and they tried that and those things are still available on clearance everywhere

A bunch of Sliver figures would be really nice, even is they are made like little figures like the regular green plastic soldiers
Other creature that I would like to see made in a similar way is the Myr from Mirrodin and later expantions, I really liked their general aesthetic.

Also I'm sure many people will want some of the classic creatures like anon on >>6231955 pointed out.

I too would love Goblins but not the ones in your image. I rather not have some generic fantasy goblins when I could have the more interesting designs from the various planes. Mirrodin, and Kamigawa goblins come to mind of some interesting goblin builds.

Now I will make exception for generic Gobliun bodies if they are something like Izzet Guild Goblins because steam punk goblins are awesome. Also who WOULDN'T want a toy of a Goblin Test Pilot?

>>6232199
I am actually shocked something like this did not happen back when they were trying to increase MtG popularity in japan with a manga and everything.

>>6232272
Unfortunately the most iconic things about magic are no longer in the designs. Myr are unique only to mirrodin so we only see them in those sets. Slivers they ruined any chance of a decent revival as an iconic imagery every player including new ones will know and recognize. Serra Angel does not have a very unique iconic design despite being an Iconic card, and that goes for tons of other similar old cards that kept being reprinted for ever.

Going through the thread and seeing all these suggestions I think the best option for toys would be building sets by either Mega Construx(megabloks) or McFarlane.

This way we can have a bunch of different characters and factions represented, artifacts can be accessories, some vehicles and locations could be made, like the Weatherlight, you could get neat little "color" packs with a small environment piece of a swamp, a forest, mountain, etc with 2-3 creatures from that respective color.

Plus, even with a single wave we are much more likely to get more from it than most other companies would get out of 3-4 waves.

MegaBlox would be shit.

You can't have them simplify amazing art into kiddy shit.
Only McFarlane, Mezco, and NECA have the capabilities of translating 2d art into 3d art.

I would love for any of these companies to do a 1:18 or smaller line if it allowed them to make giant mounts and characters.

>>
>>6237635
Not even close. They eat things and get bigger. The classic Atog had you sacrifice an artifact to give it a +2/+2 until end of turn. there would be other color varieties that ate other things like lands, enchantments, and even a blue one that ate 'time' (skip your next turn)
>>
>>6237636
Hmm, I kind of remenber saw a couple of cards years ago that have abilities that were shared with others Atogs, or at least that's what I can remenber, I guess that is from where my confusion came from. I think that I read somewhere a recipe to create a Atog deck.

dude no need to be hostile, the boggarts are easily among my most favorite goblins in MTG, however wether they are my favorite or not was not the point of my post. It is about appearances, and frankly the Boggarts don't look too unique and different from typical fantasy goblin depictions. Love their personality and cards, but they look like every day goblins.
>>

I care deeply about my boggarts. They are the good stuff, the eye candy of the goblin worlds!

Boggarts are just UK folklore goblins.

going through this thread, really seems like the smartest way to go foir MtG figures should be Legendary Creatures instead of the Planeswalkers. It also seems more interesting designs rather then plain humans will be more likely to sell.

Idea, crazy idea just occured as typing this post out. They should do a 'best of EDH' figure line. The most popular commanders/legends in general coming out with alternate art Mega Sized promo cards in the package with the figure of that commander. I think such a line would work VERY well. They can get away more easily with up selling the figure for more then it should be, and they don't have to worry about any complaints for 'MUH RESALE VALUE' no matter which commander they choose since mega sized card. Each figure also comes with a proxy checklist card of the figures in the wave so you can use it when you commander inevitably gets tucked away into a deck.

>>
>>6242706

I think people who buy toys would want the figures are not likely to be current MTG players since those mostly sink all their money into cards.
>>
>>6243203
part of why I suggested the EDH/Commander idea earlier back. I feel those really into EDH are more likely to care about a figure of the popular commanders especially if it is their own.
>>
>>6243499

So what are some popular EDH/Commander cards that would make cool toys? I know little if anything about those formats
>>
>>6243832
Well from what I have seen it seems that the commanders from the most recently released annual Commander Decks are among the most popular to have decks being built around for that year. By the time the next Commander decks come out, a good number of those previous commanders have been pushed back by the older favorites, and then after the new decks come out even more of the previous Commanders are replaced by the new stuff with a few commanders being seen as staples.

Some staples include a lot of the commanders from the very first decks released, Kaalia, Animar, and Zedruu tend to pop up a lot for deck building. Zedruu and Kaalia would make for decent figures.

other then the Commanders made exclusive for those prebuilt decks, you tend to see a lot of decks around usually mutli color, especially 3+. Zur the Enchanter is an especialy notorious one I see mentioned often on /tg/.

Probably all the 5 color Legends have a decently high popularity if only because of how few of them exist.Sliver Queen/Overlord are popular for the obvious reason of how versatile a sliver deck is, and Reaper King due to how easy he is to cast despite being 5 color. Obviously the sliver Queen would make for a popular figure.

As I type this, another interesting side benefit to these figures is you could use them in the game intself. Have some sort of stand for the figure that you can also slide the card into to represent whenever your commander is in the Command zone.

Originally called Elder Dragon Highlander or EDH for short. You choose one Legendary as the 'commander' of your deck, so reason why I keep saying popular commanders should be given figures and not walkers is two fold. First they have story presence versus some random card like the walkers (arguably they seem to be more likely to be more enjoyed aas characters then the walkers fluff wise).

Second is that as commanders it means people are building entire decks around them, they are the star of a person's deck. They have a bit more personal impact to a player IMO then even the planeswalker cards. Of course the issue with this is that you have a ton of options and won't be able to please everyone. Logically going for the most popular and 'notorious/well known commanders gives more chance the figure sells even to non players of that Legendary.

Check out the Commanderdecks, every fall they release a wave of 5 decks. This year's was REALLY awesome 4 color decks. first 4 color cards since the Nephilim. Sadly I don't think any of the 5 decks had one of the Nephilim but could be mistaken. Each deck comes with a single 4 color legendary as the main commander choice and then 3 dual color legends with new keyword that allows two legends with that keyword to both command.
>>
I'd like to see the original "icons" of the game, the creatures everybody associated with it for the first 3-4 years of its existence. Serra Angel, Sengir Vampire, Shivan Dragon, Llanowar Elves, Force of Nature, Prodigal Sorcerer and Hurloon Minotaur. When I think of magic, those guys still pop into my head, even if they're long gone (and not even that good compared to newer cards).

As much as seeing the old classics getting love would be great, the one problem with them is there is really nothing that stands out about them for the most part.

Serra Angel, just a bland angel, I would love a classic angel figure don't get me wrong but nothing to really make people go 'OMG SERRA ANGEL' without reading the box.

Sengir Vampire: looking at the old art of him, what? just some bald probably shirtless pointy eared vampire dude? Updated art is a lot better, especially in this day and age of bestial looking vampires being a minority in media. He might even possibly be picked up by people who don't now Magic just because it is a fairly cool looking vampire

Shivan Dragon: Ok I will admit, despite how he is probably the single most generic dragon design in all of MTG, there is a severe lack of even generic dragons in decent articulated figure form.

Llanowar elves: The only one so far where not only was original art pretty unique for an elf creature, but the more recent art is still faithful to the tattooed head and mohawk tribal warrior theme going on.

Force of Nature: green mouthless dude for the original? Nothing noteworthy about that. Updated versions are just angry skinny tree men.
Prodigal Sorcerer: Wow, boring, just a generic blue mage.

Hurloon Minotaur: There is a lack of Minotaur anything toy wise, and the statue they made of him IS pretty badass.

Again, give me Llanowar Elves they are definitely one of the few old classic cards that not only had a very unique look but retained that look in new card art. And there is a criminal lack of good dragons in general no matter how basic and generic the design.

How much is Magic the Gathering still a thing? I sort of regret not getting into it when I was a kid, playing Yugioh instead.

I knew a bunch of people in college who still played and had their decks, but I don't know if they were old decks or if they still bought new cards. Is it worth getting into now or is it dead/dying?

MtG is still going strong. Like surprisingly strong. And all the game/card/toy shops around here have Magic nights several nights a week.

The problem I've found is finding casual players to play with. I'm not competitive and just like to have fun and look at the cool cards and build decks of things I like.

I only got into it last year (I'm 26) because a new friend of ours has like a billion cards, but no one to play with up here. So we just get drunk and play tournaments.

Oh, to add on. A lot of game nights shops have do what's called "Friday Night Magic" where all the players buy a bunch of booster packs and go round-robin building decks from those. That way you don't even have to have a deck with you. You just need to know the rules.

As a newbie, I'd actually suggest trying the Magic the Gathering 2015 mobile game. It would let you learn all the rules with no room for error so you're not going into a game blind. You can play through a bit a of the campaign without having to purchase anything.

It's probably as strong now as it was then. I don't think there's much that would make Magic die off at this point since there's a whole subculture based around tournaments and there's lots of money to be had.

same way man. I lament my college days like crazy if only because of the super casual group we had there. We did have some cares about trade values sure, but we could have about a $5-$10 price difference in some cases before anyone cared about value gaps. First time at a place outside of college setting 'hey want to trade that?'
"sure what kind of things you go-"
>I stop talking in dissappointment as he whips out the damn phone to look up the current pricing.

Man I felt so horrible seeing that. Like all the fun I had with MtG just completely drained out. never had that feeling of casual fun again until i was assitant Scout Master for my brothers' troop when they went to a summer camp. some of the counselers there had an MtG circle going on, felt just like college. But never found a good group since.

Magic Duels, not 2015 is the latest game. And is also a Free to Play.

Oh there's a new app? I hadn't noticed. Awesome.

I've been caught up in Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links right now, but I need more casual pocket card games in my life.

Is it bigger than the Yugioh scene?
>>
>>6250684
I would say so. One big thing that REALLY helps the MtG scene that YuGiOh cant do (well) is drafting. Drafting is where you show up to the event and get put into a group of 8 people. You all are given 3 packs each. You all open the pack without revealing the cards to others, choose one card place face down and then pass the booster to the next person. This rotation continues until the packs are exhusted then you open the next pack and repeat.

If you don't know MtG well and thus unable to figure out why this works well in MtG, then maybe you have more familiarity with the Pokemon game. Similar to how pokemon has Energy cards which you need to make attacks, there are land cards in MtG that grant energy every turn. Every non land card in the game(yes there are exceptions) requires some amount of energy/mana being produced to play. And there is 5 different colors of mana a land could produce. Logically this means you have to build a deck with a limitation on a specific color(s).

So it doesn't matter if on your third pack open you pull some super shiny awesome killer card. If it is a color you have no support from previously choosen cards for, then choosing it over a better fit for your colors is not a very good idea. Especially if you want to win and get the prize of bonus packs.

Yugioh on the other hand does not have such a restriction built into the game mechanics. Yes I know there are archetypes these days people try to play around, but at the end of the day, if you open a crazy awesome card, it IS going into your selection cause it most likely will always be effective for you.

So yeah, drafting is a big thing at the stores every friday night.

Another thing that keeps MtG popular in casual play (at least with a lot of the groups I hanged out with) that Yugioh does not handle mechanically well is more then 2 players. Maybe things changed but the last time I heard about 4 player yugioh it was some really weird tag team thing where you pass control back and forth or some stupid thing.

MtG cards will specificaly state things like 'target player', target creature' etc, meaning you could very well even use cards in ways not fully intended. Hit an opponent with a heal spell when he is almost knocked out by another opponent? maybe if you are lucky he will now take the chance to retaliate letting you sit back for a few more turns worry free as they focus on the other.

MtG just has a lot more versatility with it's mechanics for a lot of formats then Yugioh has.

I doubt that Hasbro will make anything but Planeswalkers since they are the only recurring characters.

They don't seem to be particularly interested in starting a line of MTG figures, hence why Funko did for a while. Maybe if there's a movie or something they'll give it a shot, but until then I doubt it.
