Even if the barbarian = war god thing is supposed to make sense, that arbitrary skull really just makes him look like a mini boss grunt you beat early on in some game... not the main villain. Then again, by now I should probably stop expecting movie superhero designs to be good instead of flavor of the month edge.

I don't get the complaints. It isn't a crazy, radical redesign or terribly bad. The skull might be a bit misplaced but it could be far worse.
I think it's another case of everyone having a knee jerk reaction and wanting to hate it.
