Hey /toy/, what can you tell me about the SoC GX34r Gunbuster?

Worth a pickup? Anything I should lookout for before I snipe one?

>Hey /toy/, what can you tell me about the SoC GX34r Gunbuster?

I can tell you that I own mine since release (a year ago) and still haven't opened it.

But as I also own the original release, I can warn you that the articulated hands plastic is so thin at the pin that it can crack over time, and the joints used to move the metal oval-shaped pieces on its legs can get really floppy. Other than that it's an awesome figure.

Oh sweet a Gokin thread.

I didn't realize this dude was up for PO. I'm really interested to see how the transformation works.

Speaking of Gunbuster, is the SRC worth it? I know it can't transform but the articulation looks great and aesthetically it's pretty awesome.

It's an SOC, so the focus is more on features and presence than articulation. That's not to say he's badly articulated, but he's so big and heavy that getting him to stay in complex poses is pretty difficult. However, he's jam packed with features, and he looks fucking great. Definitely worth it as a display piece/occasionally fiddling around with.

i got it some time ago it worth it if you can get it for a good price also just a tip when i tried to remove the feet it comes with when you first transform it from ship to mecha the feet come off by pressing a little button on the back of the ankle
>>
>>6075927
I have the original. I saw this on discount on goHastings for only $100 shipped, but as I was waffling on whether or not to double up on it, Hastings went out of business and the website closed. Oh well.

The metallic blue shade is what made me hesitate, I get what its going for, but it just seems too blue to me. The figure itself is pretty cool, but showing its age. Its from 2006; before a ton of advancements in transforming robot toys. Its proportions suffer from the transforming aspect.A more modern release would probably make more swappable parts for a better look overall. still, its pretty cool as a mecha toy.

I think they always are shoulder armor, but depending on the artist / designer they can look more or less so.
>>
>>6081917
>but depending on the artist / designer they can look more or less so.

The explanation is more simple than that, it's just that the upper arms on the transforming GGG toys need to be on that place so the forearms can slide upwards and attach to them. If the upper arms were closer to the body that part of the combination sequence wouldn't work well.

I have the old GX-34. Both it and Ideon suffer from the same problem of having a metal rivet too big for it's plastic socket, so one of the fingers on Gunbuster broke off and the left shoulder on Ideon is cracked.

Which is a shame because despite the tolerance issues, they're otherwise fucking great.

Well, that's scary. It's kinda been my grail for a good few years now. Is it worth risking it at all?
>>
>>6075927
I have the 34r, it's a really solid figure and definitely worth it if you want a "definitive" Gunbuster.

Buster metal colors are great, the figure has a shitload of features/accessories and can do both a "perfect-change" and "screen-accurate" transformation/combination, with partswapping required for the latter. Lots of diecast in the feet, legs, and torso. Ratchet joints are pretty solid unlike in some other topheavy SoCs.

Unfortunately it has your typical problems that come with a heavy diecast combining robot. The articulation is there, but it's really hard to balance in any pose that isn't either standing upright or heavily supported by other stands due to topheavyness.

Torso transformation/folding is also really wonky so even if you get it to balance the flaps might come loose and make it fall over.

>>6078466
This on the other hand is perfect. Only problem is that Liner Gao's ratchet joints where it attaches to the torso will become loose over time. Goldymarg is also a totally worthwhile expansion pack as a $150 accessory.

I just snagged this to decide whether or not I should go further down the rabbit hole of SoC Evas.

Is there something wrong with it, or is it just cheap because it's unpopular? The NTE design for Eva-00 is one of my favorites in the series, surprised it shelfwarmed harder than 400% or Awakened Eva-01.

My poor credit card : (
>>
>>6093097
I don't need to be a "retard" to see that there's no fucking room to engineer the "swinging trap door" things they did to hide the arms on things like God Mars, which had smaller limbs and larger body cavity space. That's the method sperglords have been claiming is "so easy". It would be an unstable mess. All they could do is include add-on covers which they've done in the past to make things "anime accurate" and only leads to more bitching about "muh partsforming".
If you don't understand THAT, you haven't been paying attention to all the bitching in this place about every little detail.
And if it's "so easy", then pull that blazing sword out of your ass and design one yourself.

It wouldn't even be that bad to engineer since only the torso and head would need removable armor.

Hell, I'd have bought it even if it was 15000 yen and smaller scale with the other SPEC Evas. Bandai will probably never revisit it though, since Kaiyodo's model bombed and Yamashita keeps pumping out more and more retarded designs for the movies.

I have the SOC SPEC XS-01R Evangelion Unit-01, and I find that the backwards and forwards hinge on the left foot is incredibly loose. How can I tighten the joint so that the figure's balance isn't totally reliant on the right foot?

>>6094983
VERY CAREFUL application of Pledge?
>>
>>6094988
I would but I'm having a really hard time finding Pledge in my country. For some reason I can never ever find any at all.

Maybe I could try looking more carefully tomorrow... does it have to be Pledge or will any acrylic floor polisher do?
>>
>>6095005
I hear Pledge has something special in it that works wonders on joints, but that could be bollocks. Get some similar stuff and try on a junker figure. If it works, great, if not, try again.

Superglue can work but you have to be reeeeeealllly careful.
>>
>>6095020
I guess I'm going Pledge hunting tomorrow then. I really hope this works on this guy because (s)he's fucking expensive and it would suck to have the posability limited by wear and tear on one joint.
>>
>>6095021
>>6095020
Pledge with future polish in it has acrylic for protecting wood floors. The acrylic forms a thin, lemon scented layer that thickens the joint and smells nice.
>>
>>6094983
Just so you know, die-cast joints are a lot more difficult to tighten than plastic joints.

I gotta do the same with my XS-01R (it's not super loose but it can lean a bit) so I haven't had much experience. I can try it if you'd like before you buy
>>
>>6095032
I'd appreciate that if you could give it a shot beforehand. Mine is obscenely loose (to the point where the figure has a hard time doing a lot of poses thanks to one foot always giving way) so I need to know if this will work.

That thing is used to push the mechanism inside Stealth Gao's nacelles outwards so you can attach the fists without haing to combine everything the first time. You can easily add the fists after combining it the first time without using that.

Try checking the instructions for starters, those shoulders are clearly mistransformed.

You probably also missed the step that moves the bars that connect the mane sides to Stealth Gao closer to the body.

I kind of dig the wider proportions of the soc golion. It harkens back to the old chogokin/godaikin chunkiness, which you never really saw in the SOC line save for a few exceptions and only recently.

Does the thing feel solid and weighty once combined?
>>
>>6108308
I think I can pull it apart more. Im at work atm, will try it when I get home.

There's a bit in the instructions about pulling / pushing together the torso of the Black Lion, so maybe I didnt completely get it right.
>>
>>6108387
>Does the thing feel solid and weighty once combined?

The Blue Lion alone feels like it weighs around the same as the SRC GaoFighGar, if not heavier. It's way heavier than GGG combined and the connections are solid.

The thigh / knee connection clips on and has a latch on the back that locks it in place, and the shoulder connectors are firm and tight but loose enough that posing doesnt feel like manual labor. It's really REALLY good. Only thing I'm worried about are the tails, but you can just pop em off the balljoints.

I swear if they pull the same with Daizyujin, I'm gonna cry.
>>
>>6108308
The stoutness as seen in promo pics is much less in hand. The proportions are very nice, and I say that as someone who was regretting not getting the King of Beasts rerelease up until the 11th hour.

>>6108387
Very much so. I don't have many SoCs to compare it with(just the GaoGaiGar set, the original gunbuster, and Big O) and it feels like the best of the bunch.

Fortunately the previous owner seems to have treated this pretty well, so said looseness isn't really present here. That or SHE improved their balljoints over time - most of the stuff I have from them are their older pieces.

Some of the parts that use nubs to lock on are a bit loose, but I think that could be fixed with a thickening agent like floor polish or a bit of super glue. But it truly doesn't bother me as it may others.

Hopefully this and the previous picture give an idea of the leg poseability.

I'm REALLY fucking happy we're getting this SOC but yeah, the people it's aimed at are too poor/cheap and won't buy it. It won't sell as well as planned and we'll never see another sentai robot in the SOC line ever again.
>>
>>6112608
I know peope like to shit on Power ranger fans for being cheapskates, but if daizyujin doesn't sell, what makes you think any other Sentai robot would? Fans may have not supported the SHF releases in time, but the fact that they do have a high aftermarket value goes to show that someone out there is paying that money for MMPR figures.
>>
>>6112579
Good for you, man. The blue seems a bit more muted in your pics than the promos, is that more accurate to what it actually looks like?

>>6112644

But these are people who buy like two of every morpher so they can have one with every coin displayed and the rest kept MIB.
>>
>>6112655
Honestly I think its just sentai purists being bitter and accusingRanger fans of not supporting the SHFiguarts imports in time. Otherwise, the LEgacy Power rangers line has been going strong, and even though a lot of those have gone on discount, a lot of people suspect TRU inflates the price on them in the first place, so the discount price still allows them to make a profit. And again, the aftermarket on those is crazy, too.

What I don't get is that collector sentai figures have had a history of not doing too well, between the SRC and SHFs, yet for some reason Power rangers gets the blame.
>>
>>6112655
That's a really small niche, so small Bandai would never make a SOC for them. No, the SOC "Megazord" is first and foremost aimed at the casual PR fans and besides Joe collectors, I can't think of a single cheapest fandom.

That's a gross exaggeration. SoC GoLion is a great blend of the classic design and the animation model. Effectively its the animation design with the detailing of the toy. This used to be the norm for a lot of modern adaptations, until this ridiculous demand that figures look like low quality, budgeted animation instead of perfect versions of a design. Just because the old anime couldn't draw/color in the lion legs in every cell doesn't make it completely inaccurate.
If you demand animation accuracy, Mattel made a decent Voltron a few years back.
>>
I'm extremely disappointed the SOC Voltron dosent have a pilot / cockpit gimmic. There was probably as much emphasis placed on them actually entering the mechs as there was when they combined.

I could have most certainly done without any of those accessories or the pointless staircase. Every one of those ugly gray weapons is money that could have gone to making this an even better figure
>>
>>6114446

>>
>>6114494
I am pleased with GoLion, but a while back after getting Sentinel's Dancouga and hearing of how Sentinel was working with a US company like Bluefin, I did entertain the idea of Toynami contracting Sentinel to design a Voltron figure. Since then, of course, it looks like the rights are less jumbled. Toynami did contract an external company, Oritoy, to do that obscenely expensive Ultimate Voltron, though.

I had a similar idea of Toynami contracting Sentinel to do a VF-1 through their Robotech license, since Bandai and arcadia have such a lock on that license otherwise. Granted, that'd mean supporting Toynami and Harmony Gold.
>>
>>6114522
Damn. A Sentinel VF-1 would be so fucking great...
>>
>>6114527
it would be great , besides how much more expensive can it get. Peoples already use to the normal near $200 macross item prices.
>>
>>6114527
The VF-1 really does need a truly new figure. Arcadia and Bandai are building off figures that are years old at this point. Bandai has the chogokin teased, too, but I think it'll be the usual focus on display over articulation. I want a transforming VF-1 that can pull off crazy poses.

Its a good display piece.

Its not something you want to keep handling and messing around with.

I own both the original and reissue and while it has major flaws I'm a bit biased. Its not a good toy by any standards but its a good piece to look at.
>>
>>6113407
What a cool looking mech. A toy with that aesthetic and articulation that also transforms would be close to a perfect toy for me.
>>
>>6117139
Sure it's still new for me, but I'd have to disagree. Solid joints and plenty of die-cast with a great transformation sequence and a boatload of accessories.

My biggest issues with the release are the weak stand attatchments and limited articulation. Left over parts are also a bit unsightly, but they all store away in the base.

Might not be as flawless as GX-68, but it's still a hell of a figure and easily the best iteration of Gunbuster to date
>>
>>6117213
Its not a good toy though.

I've had the figure for awhile now and its going to be a floppy mess overtime.

You can enjoy it now and sugar coat it being the best Gunbuster figure to date no doubt but it hasn't really aged well enough in today's standards.

I'm just saying its pretty much your only real option other than the SRC. I really wish the reissue fixed the problems.
>>
>>6117204
Fuck yes that'd be awesome. The individual vehicles were pretty cool (especially the blue VTOL thing) and it's a shame the only transforming option AFAIK is the gigantic brick from the kid's line.

A pity Bandai has (AFAIK) exclusive rights on Sentai stuff, I'd kinda like to see someone else do a smaller and more affordable than an SOC, but still well articulated transforming take on some of the Megazords/whatever the Japanese names are for them. The component vehicles only have to transform into body parts, so theoretically it should be easier to do than, say, Transformer combiners (where each limb has to be able to form a robot, a vehicle, an arm and a leg).

>insert any SOC here, even Golion, and this statement is still true.
>>

>Its not a good toy though.

That's true, but it's not a GunBuster only thing. SoCs aren't supposed to be treated as "toys" anyways. You transform them carefully once in a long while/pose them a little, and leave them as decoration on a shelf. There's not a single SoC that you should handle like a Transformer or something like that.

>I've had the figure for awhile now and its going to be a floppy mess overtime.

Owner of a second-hand original release for 5 years, the metal oval piece on its legs are floppy and it sucks, but every other joint is perfectly fine.
>>
>>6117671
No I fully agree the SOC line are pretty display pieces and they do it in full spades.

I was just answering what anon is getting himself into just because its ""cheap" doesn't mean its for you.

Jeez, the toynami figure has aged like milk....
>>
>>6116223

So are only the limbs metal or are the bodies metal too ala like the original DX?
>>
>>6118722
Its so weird how relative things can be. Up until a few years ago I would've said toynami's Voltron was near perfect, a little skinny, sure, but it couldn't get much better. Now I wonder what I ever saw in it. A similar situation happened betwen MP-01 Optimus and MP-10 Optimus, and even MP-10 compared to other Optimus figures like the Ultimetal.
>>
>>6117364
>A pity Bandai has (AFAIK) exclusive rights on Sentai stuff, I'd kinda like to see someone else do a smaller and more affordable than an SOC, but still well articulated transforming take on some of the Megazords/whatever the Japanese names are for them. The component vehicles only have to transform into body parts, so theoretically it should be easier to do than, say, Transformer combiners (where each limb has to be able to form a robot, a vehicle, an arm and a leg).

This is why I want 3rd party Sentai to be a ting. It depresses me how disposable these designs are treated as; they last a year, then might never see a new figure again, and the chances of getting a new, full sized and transforming figure are nearly impossible. 3Ps are getting better and better, and try to maintain playability which would make them a good update to those Sentai DX figures.
>>
>>6117364
You could just get the Super Minipla. Articulated and combines.

GGG is fucking great, maybe I'm biased because it's my favorite super robot, but the figure by itself is amazing anyways.

Looking at your pics makes me think that I really should free my GunBuster, I own it since release but it's still sealed in its box. I guess owning the original for years makes me way less hyped about this one, but the poor thing is still untouched after 16 months. And I still need to equip GGG with the Stealth Gao II set I bought back in April, too.

I'm waiting for Golion/Voltron to arrive right now and I'm sure I'm going to open that one before the other things nonetheless.
>>
Question about SOC Golion. Besides the chromed lion limbs, are the bodies of the lions metal too? If that is, that must be really heavy and worth the price.
>>
>>6075927
As cool as this release is, the blue bugs me way too much. Glad I got the original release, overpriced as it is.
>>
>>6120533
From touching em, feels like the majority of the body is metal. eg with the Blue Lion, looks like the actual body is diecast but the head, tail and the little missile thign that pops open are plastic.

Fuckinng thing is heavy as fuck when combined though. My 7 year old nephew couldnt lift it off the table with one hand. probably around 3-4 kilos altogether?
>>
>>6120597

That's the same with the original DX but the lion limbs were just chromed plastic so this must be MUCH heavier.
>>
>>6120597
>>6120610
None of the lion bodies are metal. Blue and yellow lions have full metal legs. Black lions rear legs are metal as well as the lower half of the front legs. Green and red's lower half of their legs only is metal. Most of the joints are metal.

Definetly not as much metal as I was expecting. Lots of plastic going on here but it's still very heavy and the weight is distributed exceptionally well

The original release isn't accurate at all as far as color goes, though. The dark and light parts are wrong, joints are supposed to be darker than the armor, but on the SoC they switched that for no reason. In that regards the new release is more accurate even taking into account that they went overboard with the blue.

I don't know why they have so many problems getting GunBuster colors right.

Any information or rumor about what's to come after Re:New Mazinger Reboot Renewal 2.0 EX +?
>>
>>6121071
Daizyujin, you mong.
>>
>>6121075
Mazinger is 73, inbred anon.
>>
>>6118722
Wait, so why are some people bitching about the legs if the toynami one has legs showing too?
>>
>>6121087
Because Bandai is supposed to make better stuff than Toynami. Bandai was basically the last chance to finally have an accurate Golion. With them taking the lazy/easy route too, there's 99% chance there will never be a high end combining accurate Golion toy.
>>
>>6121087
>>6121093
Oh and I should add that this is probably why the disappointed people are so vocal over this SOC. If it was "just another Voltron/Golion" it wouldn't be such a disappointment but it's not just another one, its the one people waited and asked for for years knowing it was basically their last chance.
>>
>>6121087
Sour grapes.
>>
>>6121093
With everything else that's going on with the figure, is it even POSSIBLE for the legs to be hidden inside the lions? I think we have to remember that animation can cheat in ways that a physical product simply can't.
>>
>>6121424
At best, they probably could've included alternate "animation accurate" replacements for the lion legs for the combined mode.
>>
>>6121424

>>
>>6121424
>>6121432
They could have just had the lion legs fold in to the body through the bottom, pushing out a flat, legless panel in the process.
>>
>>6121084

Wrong. 73 is Great Maz. 74 Is Getter Robo.
>>
>>6121572

The legs would have to be smaller to do that, recreating one of the lion proportion problems they were trying to minimize. Stop talking. Your ideas are bad and you should feel bad.
>>
>>6121585
Make the legs collapsible.

>MUH HURR DURR PROPORTIONZ

Then just include a swappable, legless panel. It's not like SOC has never done that on previous releases.
>>
>>6121588
>Make the legs collapsible.

Why don't you diagram how that would be done.

>Then just include a swappable, legless panel.

So that the legs and panels keep falling off when posing the lions? Just stop. Or, alternately, let me know when you've released your own GoLion toy. I'll buy one and review it for you.

The normal Kaiser is an even older mold than both regular-releases of SKL. The first SKL they released was a DVD bundle and is a completely different mold than the next two.

I recomend either the first release Kaiser (the one without chrome) or SKL final count version. I own both and they're nice.
