Where to buy
>GSC Online Shop - some figmas only are available through their online shop
>Amiami - usual place for buying, to some people, shipping is a bit higher due to packaging
>Hobby Link Japan shipping is usual lower, but their prices are a bit higher, private warehaouse is available
>Hobby Search Japan - items stay in stock the longest
>Mandarake - search figma or フィグマ
>eBay/Amazon - only if you hate having too much money. Avoid bootlegs, you can spot them as 'Chinese version'
>http://jungle-scs.co.jp/ - Seems like you can fine some good deals here
>Check the BST threads, My Figure Collection for any offer/deal

If you're getting into the hobby, there's plenty of other useful information to find on the wiki.

I few that I can think of now is those from the Knights of Sidonia, Tekkaman Blade, and boatgirls if you are into those.
You might want to scan the figma list on the official website for any that I missed.

Honestly, Figma doesn't have the best inventory when it comes to Giant Robot figures.

You'd be better off going for something from Bandai's Chogokin lines or Kaiyodo's Revoltech.

I understand the advantages, but it really saves you from worrying about fluctuations.

>>6062997
Assuming some of the horrid responses of the others haven't put you off, just scan this handy list:
http://myfigurecollection.net/search.php?sort=date&order=desc&pp=1&display=grid&root=0&categoryid=0&origin=&character=&manufacturer=&manufacturer_p=-1&artist=&artist_p=-1&type=Figma&type_strict=1&type_p=-1&material=&material_p=-1&event=&event_p=-1&title=&version=&year=0&month=0&day=0&tags=&scale=&runid=-1&rating=0&addby=&barcode=&catalog=

It sorts the figma by release date and gives you all sorts of other useful information.
>>
>>6063189
They are pretty distinct. Even if you don't dislike Amatsukaze, much like myself, she's still different enough that she has her own significantly different charm compared to Shimakaze.
>>
>>6063289

I think Amatasukaze is a lot cuter than Shimakaze, but that's just me.
>>
>>6063289
They are of course very different, but they're in the same "category".
Similar clothing, same build (loli-ish, skinny), similar type of equipment.

Of course, they're not the same character, but I really like them both equally.

1) What's the average price you guys pay for a figma?
Roughly $60. I've only bought 4 figmas, and am considering the Saitama and Yoshihiko. Wanted the Johj but don't want it enough to pay aftermarket prices.

> 2) What's the ideal price or price you think the average figma is worth?
I paid pre-order prices for figma Solid Snake and honestly regretted it. That figure is good on most accounts except the odd decision for the waist joint and how sloppy the paint was for the teeth-gritting face. I had faith in them because both of my Berserk figmas are excellent. The next thing I got was the Guyver, because I thought the old Max Factory figs were good and that turned out to be underwhelming. Honestly, I think the prices hovering at $50 and $60 for revoltechs and figma is getting a bit too much for me. I'll obviously still do it if the character is something I like enough but... even then, I honestly have a hard time justifying the purchase when there are other figures I want and have more consistent QC Granted, maybe I'm the wrong person to comment on this because I was drawn to figma not for what made them famous, the girl figures but this is my honest opinion.

>3) What's the least you have paid for a figma?
I paid $35 for Guts Black Swordsman Armor.

>4) What's the most you have paid for a figma?
Most I've paid is $100 for the Berserker Armor Guts, because I missed the pre-orders for it as I was between jobs and wanted to be prudent.

>1) What's the average price you guys pay for a figma?
£40-50, and ever since Brexit the cost of importing just keeps getting higher.
>2) What's the ideal price or price you think the average figma is worth?
In an ideal world I'd only pay the RRP for all of my toys, no shipping fees or import taxes.

£16 on ebay for a brand new figma Motoko movie version.
Closely followed by £21 for figma Guts Band of the Hawk version from a Cash Converters in Norwich.

Can't remember what the conversion rates were at the time, but I paid 8000-9000 yen for Satzbatz Knight and Black Lotus. Also paid £50 for a used figma Ryuko missing one of her alternate hands.

I think around...$32-ish?

>implying Max Factory didn't just reissue Saber 2.0 and Sinon GGO
Max Factory has been getting a little more comfortable with the idea of reissues lately because sales are starting to drop off rather sharply as prices increase and Japanese collectors can't afford them anymore. You have to remember Japan is the main source of income for Max Factory. Just look at some of the prominent reviewers and how few figures they are buying these days.

Even if the exchange rate suddenly improves again it's not going to change the fact that JAPANESE collectors are still being screwed hard. The average price of a figma used to be between 2500-3500 yen, the average price now is between 6500-8000 yen. It's like if Marvel Legends went from being $20 to $40-60. Keep in mind a price jump from $6.98 to $9.99 basically killed the GI Joe line here.

At the end of the day...I don't think certain things will get reissues, especially "limited edition" figures like Berserk Guts but I can see some other popular releases getting reissues. >Who is your favorite boatgirl?
That would be the sweet-as-a-melon, anime-loving, weapon-engineering, 4th-fleet-flagship, Yuubari-san!

The animated series officially gave her a nice workshop outfit that could be made into a figma with more technical related stuff eventually (pic related).
>Her normal look: http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/Yuubari/Gallery

I'd post the write-up I sent Good Smile about her getting a figma, but there are no spoilers on /toy/ so, oh well:
--
She's not actually the proud type to put "-san" after her own name. That comes from this wonderful ongoing series about the Kanmusu in, around and more than a little shy of their 30s:
http://danbooru.donmai.us/pools/8415

You're likely to find your favourite boatgirl, or at least one you're fond of in there. It's ongoing anyway, so plenty more to come if he keeps enjoying making it.

You need to buy the figfix statue to get the third face. She only comes with the standard face and the open mouth happy face. The side looking face is with the figfix.
>>
>>6065676
Motoko, Miyo sucks
>>
>>6065720
This. Motoko is a better figure in articulation and in her uniqueness. Miyo is just...overpriced for what she is and not all that fun to pose or play with. Her face expressions suck too which is ironic because in the source material she comes from she isn't some fucking emotionless robot.

>>
Not sure if this is the right place but since it is figma related I'll post it anyways.

Basically, I ordered an unopened figma from Mandarake and it came broken in the package. Contacted GSC, they said it's too old and their customer service no longer covers it. Understandable since it is a fairly old figure. But I contacted Mandy on the same day (last Friday) and they still have yet to respond.

My question is, how long does it usually take for Mandarake to respond to customer service emails? Mandarake SAHRA, specifically.
>>
I hope they make a Maui like the avengers Hulk.
>>
>>6066779
>Smart, delaying the good stuff until after everyones wallets recover

Usually, whatever gets delayed means they found a problem with the mass produced release of the figure(like Samus Zero Suit), they couldn't fulfill all preorders and need more time to produce more or shipping problems to distributions. GSC couldn't care less with our wallets recovering, all they care about is how they can get money from consumers/collectors the fast way as possible.

I hope this is more of a "we couldn't meet demand and need more time to make more" type delay rather than a "we found a major QC issue and Gilgamesh is going to be a QC mess" type delay. I'm thinking Samus may have played a part since they found a last minute problem with her and had to scramble.

I'll be honest...if Gilgamesh is less than flawless I will be so disappointed because not only is he expensive but how can anyone live with a flawed king of heroes? Don't do Gilgamesh wrong Max Factory.

>>
>>6067343
As much as I wish this was the case, I'm afraid not. That would be all too convenient, managing to break 2 completely unrelated parts and lose another unrelated part.

Frankly I find my appalling luck with this figure alarming. Everything else that arrived in the same order was perfect, perhaps all the potential flaws throughout the entire order was focused on that figure? Or is it a premonition of my future bad luck? Have I committed a crime so heinous that it caused my figure to have not 1 but 3 errors?

Really, who knows, who cares? All that's important is that I want my refund.

>>
>>6068992
Homura. Homura is literally 11/10, especially if you can get your hands on the school uniform version as well.

Mami is also great, but personally she's not as fun as Madoka. Madoka's accessories are fantastic. Be careful with the staff though, it's fairly difficult to squeeze into her hands.

I'd comment on Kyoko but mine came decapitated in the package so I don't think I can really be a judge of her until I can get a proper one.
>>
>>6068994
Sounds like the people who shipped it to you got her confused with Mami.
>>
>>6069029
Exactly my first thoughts, kek

But either way, get Homura first, then Madoka, then Mami. That's my recommendation.

Also, if you see any of the school uniform versions of the girls, those function as addon packs for the magical girl figures so they're worth getting too. The accesories are pretty good on them, and having them side by side with their magical girl counterparts is pretty damn aesthetically pleasing.

I have both Homuras (well three of them if you count the Homucifer version), BUt I want to do a school uniform version from later in the series. Long hair and black tights instead of knee socks.
What would be a good Figma to use for the legs?
Kurisu is out, her legs are too long and thin. Not cannibalizing my casual Saber. I need one with shorter legs to look right.

Yes I admit I might need more of those boxes. Although I don't store all the extra parts inside these, also you need to be more practical in a way something like putting multiple fig's parts into a slot. Eg: all ninja Satbatz accesories goes into one slot, or maybe all BRS series, etc.

Also, for Madoka, you have to be careful with the paint on the front dress, the flexible rubber one. Moving the skirt scraped off the yellow paint on mine. I wasn't ham-handling it too, I think the paint just degraded after so many years, even on those which were unopened these whole time. Recently, it took off the 4th pink button counting from the top too. The skirt is too close to the flexible rubber piece. If you have a thing for small details, you have to watch out on this part.

Agree with the head, arm and cropping. But if the gun arm is forward then the right leg needs to be back and bent at the knee, and the left needs to be forward and straight. Opposite arms and legs and all that.

I've always find her music questionable and I play the DivaF games but design varies and not everyone can share your views. It's shit for you but someone or a set of people like the designs enough to have all these releases and whatnot.

She's literally a 3D model designed to sing, she has no character or personality. Why is she so many people's waifu?

>>6074180
This I can understand though. Since figma has so many female figures having generic outfits/bodies that you can buy could appeal to people.
>>
>>6073932
Miku and Saber is what you buy when you just want to be a person who buys anime figures but you don't actually like anything interesting.
>>
>>6074255
So it's the anime version of Funko Pops then?

>>6074239
People just have different tastes. Don't overthink this sort of thing because even though she doesn't have personality someone is bound to find a way to waifu her or at the very least find a variant of her design to be appealing to that extent.
>>
>>6074502
I understand that and all but when you piece together the fact that so many goddamn people like her and that she's literally nothing more than a 3D model it makes no sense.

Like, shit, people can waifu anything. But that many people over a literal characterless doll? How the fuck does it work?

I really want to say it's marketing that does it.
>>
>>6074526
I'll go with what anon said that she's like a sort of "go-to" if you want to get into anime figures and characters so it's like a first exposure to the medium. Maybe you also have people who got so behind into listening to the music, attending those concerts, and collecting merch that eventually they want to immerse themselves even more to the point of waifuism. I'm sure I'm not giving a good explanation but after visiting a Miku event here and there and seeing the number of people it always strikes me that somehow, someway, with no personality can garner the hearts of people through either design or music that captures something within. That and you have Miku just being a major brand within itself and companies probably took notice and want to build on her as much as possible for sales from the fanbase and possibly casual passerby.
>>
>>6074526
Because miku is cute and she is not a seasonal waifu.
>>
>>6074550
So it's both her being entry level as shit and her having tons of marketing as a brand.

This makes much more sense now.

>>6074559

Why is big titty Sonico so popular?
I literally cannot comprehend why anything is popular since they are all nothing more than lifeless and characterless 2D and 3D garbage that doesn't pander to me
>>
>>6074776
>Why is Miku so popular?
because there are literally thousands of songs using her, some of which are quite good
>Why is Love Live Idorus so popular?
the result of a carefully engineered campaign over the past six years by Sunrise, Dengeki Hobby, and Lantis to create characters that appeal to the widest variety of otaku. this was done using various polls to determine things like personality, hairstyle, names, etc. it's crowdsourced otaku bait.
>Why is KanColle Boats so popular?
there are such a huge variety of them. there is a huge crossover with military and anime otaku. the game is kinda fun, and is free. japs love revisionist history and this glorifies their pre-war navy.
>Why is Fate so popular?
Fate/Stay night was groundbreaking when it was first released as a VN. it was then spun off into an anime, more games, more anime, and so on. there is a large cast of characters based on pretty archetypal personalities.
>Why Nintendoshit so popular?
this I don't get
>Why is big titty Sonico so popular?
>big titty
said it yourself there
>>
>>6074776
See, >>6074791 has a proper answer to all of those, except that Miku is still an odd one out. Having a few decent songs out of thousands that are mostly generic trash doesn't really come off as waifu material for so many millions of people.
>>
>>6074799
she's been around for 10 years now bruv. her appearance is also creative commons licensed by crypton to promote people using her and to get fan artwork done. they basically fostered a very good environment for a fandom to grow in.
>>
>>6074803
So it's heavy marketing + fandom friendly environment + long reputation + normalfag appeal.

This makes more and more sense now. I'm starting to understand how this works.
>>
>>6072317
Yes
>>
>>6074840
yeah, basically. goodsmile cooperates with crypton every year to sponsor a racecar and there's a new miku costume designed specifically for that. then there are costumes designed for songs. it's pretty easy to see once you have swam in the vocaloid pool for a little while.

If she were just a 3D model then sure she wouldn't have such popularity. But she's a few hundred 3D models, plus other original yet "officially" recognized designs. She's also an idol that can reach people in a way no other person or character could, because she doesn't have a personality that would conflict with (almost) any genre.

That last part is the most important one. Also, do keep in mind that a lot of people learn to appreciate her music and voice, despite all the variations, simply because of one song's lyrics that really touch their heart.

Quality over quantity. That said, there are many great little and large ideas that would've had almost ZERO chance of seeing the light of day without her, because most people either "can't sing" or just don't have the time to refine it to realize their aspiration through their own voice.

>Long story short: sentimentality is powerful
We just often stifle and underestimate it
With Miku it's near impossible though
>>
>>6074933
Except Rei actually has a personality and a character.

You're not one of those retards, are you?

>>6075307
I don't really understand the point of this post but ok.

Mine came from amiami today, and that front shin piece is just as fucked up on mine as on yours. In fact mine looks a little worse, but that may just be the camera angle on yours vs in hand on mine. I'm going to assume its a standard error across all of them now.

Is Link between worlds DX version worth paying $20 extra for?

I have Mayoi. She's pretty good. Pic related.
Had Arararagi but one arm socket came loose and his torso was beginning to discolor so I sold him off.

On another note, the LA minigun is quite a pain to pose with.

I have them all, overall they're good figures, but I'll tell you what is not right about some of them

>shinobu is the weakest of the group, she comes with virtually nothing, has only two faces and they're not good, worst part is her arms are too thick for her body, in some poses it stands out more than others

>kanbaru is cool, but I find her faces to be all ugly, she looks chubby, and especially the normal espression is quite bad. also, she doesn't come with alternate haircut, I guess she came out before she had her long hair in the anime.

>senjogahara's neck feels a little too long, and as kanbaru, doesn't have a short hair version.

>nadeko's shoulders feel weird, they're quite low, if you don't put her jacket on

Everything else is really good, I may have wanted a normal expression for koyomi tho.

Hachikuji is awesome, really cute and well done, and comes with a lot of accessories.

>>6077864
Nice work on yours. Did you sand it lightly & prime before painting? Wanna take the next step.
I tried painting on bare plastic before and the results were not pretty.
>>
>>6077864
Also to add on, did you glue the cables? Cause they slip out pretty easily.
Might also cement the whole gun together if I wanna paint it.
>>
>>6077880
Thanks!

I usually avoid painting large areas with a brush, cause you have to do it in many layers, and it takes a lot of time (and it's easy to make it look like shit).

No need to prime if you paint with spray cans.

For the scratches it's dry brushing, again no need to prime.

>>6077882
You can push the cables deep in the backpack with no need of glueing, the only one I glued is the one that goes into the pipe thing (there is one second pipe thing, which you can use if you want to pose the gun without the backpack/cables)
>>
>>6077860

No, I sprayed some matte topcoat, it did the trick.
I'm using tamiya stuff.

The two different blacks are because some parts were either sprayed with black (barrels) or paintbrushed (some parts of the "core"), when topcoated the difference between painted and non painted looks nice.

Also, I could suggest you to use a gun-metal can (didn't use it on the minigun, but you can see it in some of the guns here), it gives a really nice touch.

Ah nice. Might give it a try to add some depth to the guns.

>>
>>6077980
Nice!
Just giving them a second shade of black, or gunmetal, improves the looks a lot.

The granade launcher's original color is really horrible, had to redo it all.

In general I tried to base my coloring on images of the actual weapons, I sometimes end up thinking I'm stupid wasting so much time giving them two shades of black when nobody would see the difference anyway lol.

Another thing, gunmetal looks really nice on the racks too, that flat grey is really too fake and plastic.

Yeah, maybe I'll make it my new side project for now. Thanks!

Total speculation but I feel like he may have been over stocked/ordered because "It's Link!" but the "mainstream audience" for Link is going to look at the original price and be all "fuck that noise."
