Pacific rim concept artist for the kaijus is an Asian-American who idolizes the Nirasawa-Takeya-Amemiya style (even if it doesn't show that much in the end product for the movie) but the mech designers were a team, I think... who... were also directed to not look at Gundams or Japanese mechas... despite... del Toro being a huge fan anyways and nerding the fuck out at Gundam store in Odaiba after the movie was done. I found it to be the single worst decision del Toro made really... Making a movie about kaijus vs giant robots but "refusing to be too heavily influenced" and "coming up with something entirely new".
