ITT old/cheap/lower-quality action figures that you love

I own the Neca, Revoltech and Figuarts TMNT figures, but there's just something so utterly charming about the original Playmates line, particularly the turtles themselves. I think they might still be my favorite TMNT figures.
>>
Those old ones are nice, but the belts always tore. I can't wait until Amazon ships my Figuarts Don.

Definitely agreed. My dream line is a bunch of turtles figures that somehow encapsulate the said charm of the old playmates figures, kind of like those MOTU figures.
>>
>>5995751
I was going to make a TMNT general thread earlier but then I realized how quickly people would bitch about the quality and autistic I am for collecting the TMNT 2012 line and the re-release of the original line.

What are your thoughts about collecting variants of the same turtle? I mainly have different variations of Donatello since he's my favorite.
>>
>>5995773
Character figure "shrines" are pretty cool imo. I have a whole shelf of just Mewtwo shit.
>>
>>5995771
I feel like the newer outer body of Mutagen Man is superior but the torso looks a lot better for the original figure.

Someone should take the torso and put the arms and legs of the newer one.
>>
>>5995776
Really? You don't feel it's too excessive? I've always wondered about it.

I also have the entire first and second wave of characters, the shellraiser, original party van, the new party van, turtle blimp and the grass kicker. I'm not sure how to display all this stuff, and my collection is mostly still in boxes.

My bitch of an ex took my Mikey, Rahzar, and Tiger Claw.

I don't think it's too excessive, and for someone that collects a whole range of shit, I've had more compliments from a shrine than a shelf full of different characters from the same figure range.

I think there's something that just looks so unified and dedicated. I think it's the fact that it looks consistent and shows you've actually made an effort to hunt down different figures, as opposed to the other shelves which just make you look like you have deep pockets.
>>
>>5995796
I see your point.

What are "must haves" for my turtle (Donatello) collection? I already know of the revoltech one line.
>>
>>5995804
Revoltech
Neca (maybe go for a purple bandana chinese knock off for consistency)
The playmates OG
The up and coming 1/4 scale movie version

..also maybe the statue from GSC if you want something as a nice static centerpiece.

I sold the 20th (or was it 25th) anniversary reissues so I could buy the Classics one, but I have to admit, I've kind of started regretting it since. I mean the reissues also included Splinter, Shredder AND the party van, and I'd love to get those.

Dude you've got to be fucking kidding me. Those figures had an insane amount details and concepts. Quality was good too.

Or to current toy lines?
Nowadays plastic is shit, concepts are shit.

Gotta love the original line. I don't think it even qualifies as low quality.
>Accurate, detailed sculpt
>Paint applications as needed
>Toy is solid, no hollowed out bullshit to save costs
>Cool Accessories
>Packaging isn't shown but it was cool as hell with good art

Imo the original turtles line was one of the best toylines of all time, definitely one of the best in that scale and for the time period. Costs are so high now that the current line is a shadow of what it once was.
I remember being stoked that the forest training turtles were coming out, I picked up a Raph and noticed his feet were hollow, the paint apps were shit, articulation had been cut down, and his accessories went from good (sais) to softer, cheaper plastic and weapons that weren't even "his" (the flamethrower thing from that episode and a weird flail).
>>
>>5995788
I don't think so. How much to you like the character? I don't have one of a single character but I do have a couple TMNT dedicated shelves.
>>
>>5996290
>How much to you like the character?

More than any other turtle, he's my favorite character in the shows/movies and is in my top 5 characters of all time. So I like him quite a bit.

>I don't have one of a single character but I do have a couple TMNT dedicated shelves.

What's on the dedicated shelves if you don't own a single character? Vehicles?

His reviews really highlight how shitty playmates is these days.
>>
>>5996288
Pretty sure the 80s turtles had hollow bodies.
>>
>>5995796
Oh hey, it's the original comic team.

In all seriousness though, when I was a kid, I kinda wanted to get four of the 80s Raph figures and equip them with the gear from the other turtles to make a comic team.
>>
>>5996319
I agree, they're scared of using paints when it is really needed.

To be fair, there HAVE been some exceptional ones, but those are too rare and far apart to really justify the laziness and cheapness playmates has become.

I think they did okay with 2nd released Shredder, Spider bytez, Leatherhead and Fly Stockman at the very least. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them off the top of my head and too lazy to look.

But off the top of my head, no TMNT 2012 series line has disappointed me more than the Slash figure.
>>
>>5996343
>Actually knowing the original comic book team instead of the cartoon as a kid.

So you must be atleast, like 33-35?

He did mention being a kid when the original toys were out, so yes.

I'm 33 for instance.
>>
>>5996442
I'm 31 and I didn't know about the mirage version until I was in my teens, even then I had no idea why they were all wearing the same bandanna for the longest time. That's why I asked.
>>
34. I was first exposed to the turtles in a comic ad for the new saturday morning cartoon line up. It has a picture of Leonardo in a red bandana. When the toys and cartoon came out, I was so into it that I searched for everything I could find related to them and ended up with some trade paperback comics.
>>
>>5996345
I stopped collecting them after the 2nd shredder and mousers came out because of the lack of paint apps and articulation.

I still like some of the vehicles though.
>>
>>5996436
Oh shiiiiiit. I just got hit with a nostalgia bomb. I loved the designs of these villians. My brother and I used to have a set of the fighter ships. And a VHS "training" video.
>>
>>5996737
>And a VHS "training" video
Wasn't there like an actual VHS game tho? Something about the vehicles also doubling as light guns?
>>
>>5996311
Different groups. I have a NECA set of 4. The Playmates 6" Animated Set of 4, and Bebop and Rocksteady. Other one is mostly full of Megabloks.
I have the core 4 in Loyal Subjects but I don't have them out right now. Also have loose customs I've done and loose 4 of the reboot but short on space right now. Have ton of boxed shit too.
>>
>>5997020
Wouldn't mind seeing your collection.

>>5996732
The vehicles are actually really well done imo
>>
>>5996339
Fine smartass.

I meant stuff like the feet were solid in the 1st release of the new playmates toys, then they started hollowing them out in the middle to make them save money. Just another example of the cost cutting they've done since wave 1.
>>
>>5996732
This. I had the aim to collect all of them. I backed out after wave 2 and it started going downhill.
>>
>>5997062
The first "Turtle Van" they made, the Shellraiser I think it was called? was garbage. No place for the characters to sit inside the vehicle? No steeringwheel? essentially just a carrying case with wheels and stuff on outside for them to climb on? Even the action features were lack luster.

The original Turtle van had a driver seat, a passenger seat, AND a side turret.

The Mutations Mix and Match Slash gives him longer legs which really makes me like the figure better. He's now taller than the Turtles, at least, where the basic figure is shorter than Mikey and looks ridiculous. You lose the elbow joints but gain a ball-jointed neck which makes him much more expressive. I found him and the Splinter from this line at Big Lots yesterday, so they should still be around.

I kind of wish I had bought more when this line was everywhere. I don't know where this play pattern of swapping parts between characters came from, but swapping Slash and Splinter's heads made me laugh for a good minute. The Turtles themselves look pretty shit but most aren't that different from their basic counterparts and some (Slash, Rocksteady, Rahzar) are genuine improvements.
>>
>>5997398
Yes, it's called the shellraiser. Later on they make the party van in the show. I agree on most complaints, but the outside looks pretty good imo. The inside? Not so much.

>>5997681

I love the old TMNT playmates toys. But I think that has entirel y to do with the fact that I grew up in the 80's and 90's and have been a TMNT fan pretty much my entire life.

Also, I love the waky shit they did with that line.

I also have some of the NECA and revoltech turtles as well as some of the Nick line. The Nick Turtles seemed like they were going in that direction, but it's sort of lacking.

>>5995788
I'm stoked for these tho.

>>5995821
They were cool. I liked how they had the most articulation for a Turtle toy at that time. That and they scaled well with Marvel Legends which is also what I was collecting at that time.

Shit I just realized I have too many TMNT toys. I should off load some of them.

>>5996018
Heck yeah. The new line tries to capture the charm of the original but just can't get it.
>>

>>6001228

>>
>>6001391

>>
>>6001228
as a kid, I bought this for 20 dollars at a comicbook shop, with a clamshell over the original blister pack. I gave the guy behind the counter the money, and immediately opened it up right there in front of them. At the time I didn't understand why they were so shocked that a child would open an action figure, but that Slash was legit my favorite TMNT figure as a child and totally worth the four weeks of allowance.

>>6001245
What is the world coming to when a gaming minature has a better sculpt and paintjob than the full sized action figure?
>>
>>6001191
Yes! The Raph in that set was great. I would sometimes hide things inside him.

The head poppin' Raph, not so much. The extent of fun I could have with him was making him headbutt someone, and that wasn't as entertaining to child me as hiding stuff in his shell.
>>

>>
>>5997681

ive been slowly hating the new TMNT these days, mainly because their designs are mostly boring. they dont have that 90s extreme element the old toys used to have. Napoleon is really just some one-off reference, and Slash doesnt really slash things

Yeah, that's what it was. The screen would have these parts that would simulate target that you were supposed to be able to shoot at to score points, and then it would shoot back with flashing bits. I don't think I was able to ever get the game to work right though.
>>

Some of those heroclix aren't exactly on the cheap side, so that could be a reason.

I think if you want the set, it's the closest you can possibly get. There's no way they'll release a better version of Slash that's actually accurate with correct detail.
>>
>>6001722
I thought it looked weird in pictures but in person it's not so bad. It helps if you just want a modern take on Slash and don't care about accuracy to the cartoon model. Actually, it helps if you take that attitude toward Playmates figures in general.

The Playmates line was GREAT. The sculpts had an immense amount of detail that the paintwork didn't do justice to. Check out Pizza Face or Muck Man for figures with a ton of little gags and details put into them.

It bums me out immensely that the only repaints of the classic figures out there are muddy messes instead of trying to bring out that detail.

They started out really strong with the first 4 turtles. I was really surprised at all the detail, articulation, and paint compared to how they could've just shat out some generic 5 POA figures. I just wanted one but I ended up getting all 4 turtles because they reminded me of the 80's figures so much.

I don't know what in the world is happening at playmates after that caused them to skip out on paint and articulation. Only good figure out recently is Karai
>>
>>5995751
Star Wars POTF2 is still my favorite Star Wass line. Particularly when they got over their steroid phase in 1997 I believe. Anything on the green cards usually has a pretty decent sculpt and they were built like fucking tanks. I was pretty rough on them as a kid and most of them are still intact and don't even have loose joints. Also the paint jobs were really good too. Much better than what we're getting now.

I somehow missed out on all the turtle stuff between the original show and TMNT. TMNT is quite decent as a show, and after watching some of the original cartoon, a big improvement imo. Man, if they could have just updated some of the original designs instead of overhauling them, and matched the quality of the original figures, it would have been great.

The Small Soldier toys weren't bad, but I was always disappointed they weren't as cool as the ones in the movie.

Nope.

I have to admit that even though the 2003 blew the 80s cartoon out of the water (Bite me 80sfags) the toys for it were much more interesting due to their over-the-top and bizarre nature as opposed to the 2K3 toys focusing more on "realism".

>(Bite me 80sfags)

What is with the constant hostility? I've never seen anyone shit on the 2003 show and people only like the 80's show because it was the first and last TMNT show they watched.

I lived through the tmnt hype train and thought the 03 wasn't bad at all, just never caught much of it during it's original run.

So this doesn't end up just being a TMNT general;

I'm getting a massive kick out of Kenner's 90's DC toys. I only got the Legends of Batman Knightquest Batman and Batmobile so far but I'm definitely gonna pick up some more old Batman toys and probably a few of the Superman ones. The only problem with the Man of Steel line is that Superman himself looks kind of ugly (and I'm not talking about the mullet), but Superboy looks pretty good.

Because people think tmnt fans are like transformers fans, and if someone likes any series other than the 80's one people will scream "not muh G1!" In their face. They don't get that not all fandoms are like that.
