Doesn't know about the McFarlane revolution in sculpt & paint work that changed the industry. Also the start of the "adult collector" movement with toys geared to adults.

>Has nothing to do with that catalog
It sure does, from the fact that computers with CAD programs were changing how a toy was engineered, to major advancements in electronic toys. Also, with a rise of computers & vidya, children had less time & money to spend on toys, which the industry is still trying to cope with today.

>Grunge? But that's 80s

>McFarlane revolution in sculpt & paint work that changed the industry. Also the start of the "adult collector" movement with toys geared to adults.
Hey, props to them, but they're still wooden wheels. Almost all of McFarlane's great work came and is still relevant from the 00s. Only their playsets from the 90s are of any redeeming value today.
>computers with CAD programs were changing how a toy was engineered
Wow, you're really reaching there. But still, fuck wooden wheels.
>Also, with a rise of computers & vidya, children had less time & money to spend on toys
You're dumb, because most kids who were born since the 70s have grown up and spent tons of money on video games. Almost all growth in the video game industry since the 90s came from us growing up and continuing to play video games. You're hypocritical and ignorant to think kids today are any different when it comes to how much time they spend playing video games.
>Believing that grunge started & ended in the 80's?
Nah, just thinking that guy meant grunge as being some 90s only thing.

Speaking of which, if /toy/ were as hipsterruled like /mu/, what are some indie scene toys that aren't actual hipstershit vinyl?
I would have said 4H, but that's pretty n00b entry-point since every collector knows about their toys. Of course, my cred is 2cool4school, because i was into 4H before they became popular.

I don't even browse /mu/ anymore, quality has sunk tremendously over the past few months. That doesn't mean I can't like a genre which happens to be popular there (and technically second wave is the popular genre, first wave is still relatively obscure on there)

>What, did someone shit on your favorite band while you were there?
Why would i post there?
Music is so subjective that almost any discussion and argument is talking past each other.
It's like going to /h/ or /s/ to talk about porn. You don't fucking go there for meaningful discussion.

>quality has sunk tremendously over the past few months.
Hahah, sorry, but NOPE. It's always been shit.
You know why I've gone to /mu/? Just to check out any music that is being linked. Like i said, I treat it like i do porn sites.
Of course, going to /mu/ is a lot like going to a porn site where all they have are droopy tits and sagging asses. They have horrible taste in music, where a lot of it is about finding indier shit than the other poster. So the quality goes further and further down the toilet just to impress another anon that their taste in music is superior and unique.

So i really don't bother going to /mu/ except on a rare occassion, so maybe the place has gone to worse since you left it, but i probably wouldn't notice. I just go there to copy or click links and see if there's anything new I'm missing out on.
> first wave is still relatively obscure on there

Because like wooden wheels, toys from the 90s have been replaced with superior figures with better sculpts, more articulation, more and better paint, and so even ones from the 00s still hold up.... unlike this shit.
>>

Dunno. JP stuff still is pricier than pre-JW depending on the figure and condition (like Ornithosuchus for example), and while there's likely to be a sequel (was it ever confirmed?) the eBay sellers are still keeping prices high. I think for the Aliens franchise you'll have less of an issue in the long run unless they start milking out more movies shortly after Covenant. At least it won't be as bad as Star Wars. Darth Plagueis has some serious rape-prices nowadays.

Past tense.
Since then we've moved on with figures that have gimmicks but aren't made of cheap looking glossy plastic, low detail, and shitty articulation.
This Thing in the 90s wouldn't have waist articulation if it had sound effects, muchless have ball-type joints everywhere, if it was made back then. Nevermind the collector quality paint and sculpt.
Fuck, even Mattel's crap today is better than 90s shit.

I don't really get it. The old marvel figures look way more like the old comics than the new figures. I looked up the beast figures and honestly they all look like shit to me. The old toy biz one feels like a comic book figure to me. Not against new toys at all. I don't let age determine what I like. If something looks good and feels like the subject matter that its representing then I like it.

fixed that for you.
You weren't reading comics back then. Stop making ignorant claims.
No shit you like him more, since they haven't done an animated style for almost 2 decades now.

Beast was basically drawn like Wolverine back then. The 90s Toy Biz version was too dopey looking to capture that look and the cartoon Beast was pretty shit, being a serious corny intellectual, instead of the whimsical smartass from the comics, and Toy Biz's figures reflected that.
They didn't get him right until the ML line had started, and first only did his angry and serious look well. A pure 90s Beast was the Marvel Legend, with the opening jaw and being widely poseable, giving him many ways to represent his character.

>its also fun to put a 5 poa figure on my shelf and just look at it.
I don't disagree, but when you have figures like ML Beast being able to pull off the actual comic book look and be poseable enough to show Beast's many traits, why would you settle for a McStatue?
Of course, if it was an actual McStatue, i can understand settling for it, since McFarlane had god-tier paint and sculpts. Some shitty 90s toy? No thanks. Even McFarlane's 90 figures were put to shame with all his later lines where he even made his figures way more poseable than anything he previously had made.

lol, just shut the fuck up, cartoon nostalgiafag.
>Your talking about the characters personality. What the fuck does that have to do with the figure?
Are you literally autistic? A physical trait such as appearance is inherently linked to the personality of a character. There are defining looks to them that SHOULD be represented in a figure, otherwise, it's boring bland expressions that we see in too many toys (which is found on that Toy Biz cartoon Beast). Have you not noticed that they've started using CGI to give masked characters like Spiderman and Deadpool expressive eyeholes in the movies now? EXPRESSIONS are defining traits for characters and some are iconic, such as this sculpt right here that is right out of a Jim Lee XMen comic.
Expressions are more than just facial features.

The Marvel Legend Beast? It's almost perfect in how it represents the character. It can look inquisitive, angry, thoughtful, or silly, depending on how you pose him. What does that 90s Toy Biz Beast do? Flips around like a stupid chimp and his expression is equally chimp-like. His articulation and sculpting limits his poses to being a strong chimp. That's barely Beast as a character

>but the first thing I think of is comics.
What bull.
Almost all the modern Beast figures look like they came right out of the comics and here you are trying to claim that obvious cartoon figure is based on something you've never read.

Thats not at all the beast I saw when I googled it. I didn't see anything like that. I saw poorly proportioned figures with bad anatomical sculpting and horrible black paint washes and bridge trolls. This figure does feel more like a comic figure though I think he should be bulkier if hes trying to be 1:1 jim lee beast recreation. And yeah the figures I saw had retarded faces. This one that for some reason you're just now showing me looks ok. Next time just come out and post the better figure. fuck google. Still don't really see how this figure portrays your "whimsical smartass" description of the character or whatever. It looks like every other angry action figure. arguing about an action figures face is so fucking stupid. They never have any subtlety. If you're seeing subtlety in this figure then good for you. You're imagining things cause you love the character in the comic. ...i think that makes you a NOSTALGIAFAG!!!!!!!!!!

btw i guess I did says "look". my bad. My point still stands. The toy biz one looks and feels like a comic book figure. The vibrant smooth blue plastic and large bulky proportions bring to mind a drawing of beast. maybe not jim lee beast specifically but Obviously that wasn't the point of the figure. The figure is an icon of the character at the time. Anyways this argument is fucking stupid. All you're doing is claiming I have nostalgia for the cartoon. I don't really give a fuck about marvel figures or cartoons and I haven't read any marvel comics for years. I think the toy biz beast is dope and would be a fun piece to have on display but if I haven't bought it yet for like a dollar then I probably won't.

It's classic subjectanon. Here he is doing the same shit in an 80's nostalgia thread. Derailing the thread into how 80's cartoons were multicultural propaganda.

Nostalgia is different for everyone, obviously depending on when you grew up. There isn't much reason or control over it, just vague emotions and personal tastes.
There is no personal preference with this guy. If someone likes something that he doesn't, that person has just deluded themselves to liking it according to subjectanon.

His tactics are similar to Anita Sarkessian:
"lots of people are enjoying thing? let me tell them why they are wrong to enjoy thing."
Meanwhile her own shitely supported opinions are put forward as fact, while the opposing view is represented as wrong, harmful, or sometimes even dangerous.

While subjectanon probably isn't an SJW, his tactics are the same, and let's be honest, SJW tactics are the worst part of SJW's.

Remember when i asked if you were literally autistic? The different levels of the mouth and just the angle of the head can and do convey different expressions and actions.
Also, it still looks like Jim Lee's rendition.

>My point still stands.
Your point is shot to hell, because it was never like the comic book and obviously based on the cartoon.
And all you've done since then is basically say "nuh uh" and not even providing any proof for any comic book version that actually looks like that cartoon. Shit, you can't even use Wildman's XMen ADventures Beast, since his style was different from the cartoon.
>The figure is an icon of the character at the time.
Jim Lee was the most iconic style for all the XMen at the time. It's why they brought in artists that had Lee's style after he left. Joe Madueriraieea managed to break from that formula, but oh shit, it's not even in that original Toy Biz style. Again, that figure is only an icon of the cartoon version. A shadow.

Oh so you want to now rationalize how people should always work and aren't allowed to say their opinion?
Geez.

Let's see why i would enter this thread:
I bought toys in the 90s.
I have fond memories of that shit.
I want to remember what toys i used to buy.
Instead of being a nostalgiafag who is impressed by outdated toys, I'm just the opposite and realize how bad the toys actually are.

Do you know how many micromachines i used to back then? Probably more than you, and seeing those Star Trek ships reminded me that they weren't as good as i thought they were.
So these threads for me are to keep things in perspective. Yes, I also suffer from nostalgia, as i said earlier, and i have fun seeing how bad shit was.

>What are you even talking about.

The problem here is that you seem to have lost all sense of perspective. 90s toys weren't shit in the 90s. You have good memories of those toys because they were good toys then. It makes absolutely no sense to compare them to the toys of today and retroactively call them shit when so many things have changed since then. Toys will always be improving and you can't go back and call everything that came before garbage when it was made as well as it could be for the time.

People shit on toys aimed at so called 'nostalgiafags' because they are just made to ape the original toys and be retro for the sake of being retro.

>What if 20 years from now some new toys come out that make your current toys looks retarded as fuck. Are you a faggot for liking them right now?
Where do you get this shit from? I didn't call anyone a faggot for liking things back in the day or say anything negative. Do you not know how to communicate in English correctly or know the definitions of words?
A nostalgiafag is someone who only likes shit from the past TODAY, though a nostalgiafag comes in many forms. Some are actually deluded enough to think that yesterday toys are better than today's.
So when i said that 90s toys are crap, i was speaking about them as being shit today and that even if i had the chance of buying something valuable but based on retail prices from back then, they're really bad enough that i wouldn't waste my money on that shit.
So how you got to thinking that i meant that even back then they were shit, it's likely because you become incoherently angry over someone not sharing your opinion that they're amazing and feels goods feels.

So if something is released tomorrow that makes today's toys look like shit, well... that's exactly what happens. No use crying over spilled milk and instead of fighting tooth and nail over old shit ibeing relevant, just accept the superior future.

But here you are fighting tooth and nail, so somehow prove me wrong to feel better about your hurt feels, and trying to make my criticism of shitty toys and pretending it's a blanket statement about everything in general.
As i said in another post, not everything ages as badly like a white girl who spends everyday tanning. A lot of things are timeless, even some toys, but the ones in the catalog? pretty shit.

So again, I never called anyone dumb for liking shit way back when. In fact, I don't even call people dumb for liking old crap. I've only called some people hypocritical nostalgiafags for being so butthurt because they can't handle someone who doesn't share their opinion.

I feel like we need some sort of copy pasta or image that we can just post as soon as subject anon makes an appearence to prevent people from responding to him.

This anon >>5902759 had the right idea.

I could bisect the catalogue and find it, way back when. A Beast Wars toy every second week
>>
>>5906613
>implying it's ever possible to make /toy/ to stop telling someone their opinion is wrong
It's never just one person.

I didn't realize at first that the prices were in Pounds and not Dollars. I was wonder why everything was so cheap. Conversion rate around the early 90s would put the rate at 1.5pounds = $1.

>>
>>5895119
i can agree with this. Im only collecting toys now because toys sucked back in the day. TMNT's, Barnyard commandos and Food Fighters were my jam though since articulation wasnt always an issue
