For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]

Due Date: November 1st

For those curious I intend to start the secret santa signups on October 1st.

Anyone know how expensive Taobaoring's shipping is? Or rather, if their calculator can be trusted? I've heard of a lot of other sites inflating weight to rip you off on shipping but supposed Taobaoring is among the better middlemen.

I know, I thought about having the black in a position that'd make sense, however in order to do that the whole front half of the unit in black. The unit would most likely enter in a sort of T-Pose. Just look at how most units re-enter atmosphere. (With the exception the Barbatos surfing in on a Graze, and the Wing/Zeta Gundams or anything that can transform)
>>
>>5889226
Just have it drop through the atmosphere in a gainax pose until it impacts, then it unfolds its arms for combat.
>>
>>5889229
There wont be anything left of the pilot or mech if it impacts

>>
>>5889238
Exactly this. No better way for a space shuttle-like robot to make an entrance.
>>
>>5889236
It's honestly pretty mediocre.

The piping is fantastic and the gimmick utilized is awesome. But, in terms of articulation and range of movement, it lacks a great deal. The top half of the finished product is really something, nice and tight and compact ,but the skirts are very limiting, especially on the sides.

If you like panel lining, go for it. Even without, it has a great variety of color spread across the whole frame.

Should i make another order so i can get those two free weapon packs?

Also, is tamiya spray paint (the small aerosol cans) a good choice for gunpla? I have trouble hand painting because my hands shake like a poorly built washing machine, but I'm not ready to invest in proper spray painting equipment.
>>
>>5889198
How solid is the Quanta RG? Are the shoulder bits prone to breaking like the MG?
>>

The tamiya spray paint works fine and dandy for gunpla. Just make sure it's not from their PS range and remember to prime.

>>

Most of the gunpla i own is 'old as shit'. That doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. I think i have an origin zaku in the mail, the zaku I.

I'm building a collection of zaku and zaku derivatives. I think I will get him, he's quite cheap and i like his unique axe.

How is there no modern release of the desert zaku II? I've seen a resin conversion kit, but that's not really the same thing.

Upon closer inspection:

The machining is actually decent. The needle looks polished.

On the other hand, rubber o-rings everywhere, trigger assembly is a pain in the ass (which was expected).

Performance:

Surprisingly good.

I would go as far as to say that the detail is close to 0.35mm Iwata Eclipse. Certainly blows the "Master"/"Veda" airbrush I tried earlier out of the water.
Spraying is consistent, trigger control is good, the limiter screw on the tailpiece does its job.

Conclusions:

Decent quality as long as you only spray water or alcohol-based acrylics (stronger solvents will destroy rubber seals).
Comes with 2 PE cups.
Trigger assembly is tricky to put back together (but you won't be taking it apart very often anyway).
Cannot replace Eclipse but *could* replace Neo (which is also Chinese made and has similar performance but 5x the price).
If you are just starting in the hobby and already have a compressor this could be a very cheap way to get into airbrushing to see if you even like it.

By having other people pay for R&D.

>>5889784
I sprayed a full cup of red food coloring dissolved in water, no leaks so far.

One other thing I forgot to mention: the spraying was done "out of the box", I only took it apart after the spraying was done.

The "Veda" ($25) I tested before would not even spray until I took it apart and removed all the debris from the nozzle etc.
>>
>>5889766
I doubt you'll tell the quality of the machining with your naked eyes. Actual high quality stuff like iwata and Badger have a lot of quality checks during production and electropolish their stuff, which I doubt Chinese companies making dime-a-dozen nozzles will do.

Oh but I can. Shitty machining is pretty apparent.

I am not saying the machining is anywhere near Iwata's, all I am saying that is it is decent enough not to cause problems with spraying and cleaning.

Same articulation and mold as the original hguc char mold and gunpla starter kit. But Difference is the gear it has, comes with a Megallan top gun and an Ornate heat axe, both are nice equipment but the axe requires paint like every other zaku axe there is.
>>
>>5889962
Interesting. Thank you, do you know if the hg zaku II mariner shares any pieces with the garma/char/default zaku II? What about the hguc zaku I?

I just finished my origins mobile worker and i love him. My only issue is that he can't hold his shield stable. It would also be nice if there was an alternate right hand instead of the claw. And now that i think of it, those rubber tubes are a nightmare, his arms keeps knocking the tubes on his knee lose.

>I've got a mariner and a tri star zaku I in the mail, i can't wait to see what they're like. I absolutely adore the mariner's colour scheme.

Honestly the Mariner is dissapointing in a couple of ways. I thas very limited leg articulation, can't hold the gun in too many poses, and only one of the shoulders has the missile caps as removeable, on the other side they are molded in with stickers and a bit more difficult to paint. And for some reason they went back to the old style for the monoeye where instead of a moveable piece it's just a sticker fixed in place.
>>
>>5890053
That's because nobody wants to even try building them.
>>
>>5890055
It sounds like a really weird build. Hopefully if we get a desert zaku or another kind of zaku it'll be much better.

Well it's a 1998 koto kit that combines a super intricate metal and plastic skeleton with vinyl suit pieces, that you then put resin armor on top of. It requires you to cut the screws to the correct length after you fasten them. This in addition to all the seam welding painting sanding that goes into a normal kit, plus the extra steps resin adds.

I'm building the 1/100 Gusion and boy am I disappointed. $50 for only one kit with parts for two and the frame has no pull out shoulder. The ball joint has close to no movement back and forth because the shoulder is so close to the body, it's like a really old MG and considering this thing cost as much as a modern MG you'd think they'd at least give it the articulation you expect from even a HGUC.
>>
>>5890545
Its big it's fat and those arent known for articulation, even the MG The-0 has shitty articulation.
>>
>>5890557
I'm talking about the frame, which should be almost identical to the one in the Barbatos. Also, I'm building the Gusion Rebake. I'm not a big fan of the fat frog but it's annoying that I had to pay for it even though it has no use if you build the rebake. You'd think at its price point they'd include two frames. The Barbatos goes for around $25 so you'd think they could, and the apparently the Barbatos frame requires modifications to use with the Gusion/Rebake parts.
>>
>>5890564
Well its how they get you really. The Frame should be similiar but its not even the Kimaris has differences too. Also you can do that, its really not that hard to modify the barbatos frame to fit the gusion it involves cutting parts off and glue more than anything else. the torso is mostly unmodified save for removing the neck joint the arms need small trimming to fit the armor and the armor piece itself also needs some pegs cut off. Legs will the trickier one but i just disassembled the calf and cut a hole in the the join so it can slide into the gusion leg and glued it from there.

Just regular double sided tape. For wet sanding, you're not (or at least I don't) dunk the whole stick in water. I just dip my finger in a cup of water and then use that to wet the paper.

What also works, but is a bit more annoying to clean up, is getting a gluestick and using that to glue the sandpaper to the acrylic

These? There leftover from the other Kimaris and Gusion's frame runners. On the manual they should be crossed out on the runner list.

Finished the 1/100 Gusion Rebake

Don't recommend it for 50 bucks unless you really like one design or the other. You don't even get a cannon or two sets of rifles (you do get the Gusion's machine gun though). In fact, you don't even get two sets of hand covers for the Gusion, you have to swap the covers outu between the holding hands and open hands, it's just a minor thing but it's annoying. baka senpai.

The white camera cover also keeps popping off, not sure why. I'll glue it eventually once I get to painting and general fixing. The back heels also feel a little shorter than the front of the feet so it doesn't feel particularly stable, especially once you put the backpack on.

Really wish they had made it into two $30 kits, or even $35.

Yeah it's for diehard. They should of made it seperate instead of 2 in one. Gusion rebake was obviously not meant for ground poses and the cannon is exclusive to barbatos to encourage buying more kits like they always done.
>>
>>5892505
The 1/100 line seems like an after thought, a little. The kits aren't bad or anything, the 1/144 just seems to have a better marketing plan.

The 1/144 IBO kits get a bunch of weapon/equipment packs that give you a bunch of neat equipment for five bucks while keeping the cost of the MSs down, but with the 1/100 stuff is bundled in but it's kinda lackluster.

it was all freehand, you can also mask off this way so that the paint goes between the tape rather than around it. it was more of an exercise in if it could be done at all, especially at that size.

ive done other masking patterns since then, as well as just using decals with camo patterns. they both have their advantages, it just depends on how patient you are and how much control you want over size and color patterns.

fire. melt the end of the plastic stick with a candle until it mushrooms and stick it on the bottom of the part. as long as its not too hot it will stick on as it cools but will snap off when you are finished painting. way simpler than alligator clips and you can use parts of the same kit's runners for paint applications. just watch out for fumes and dont get it too hot or it will ruin everything.

>>
>>5893223
To be fair it really does sound retarded. If it's hot enough to flow the plastic is giving off fine styrene particles that will damage your kidneys and could give you cancer in like 30-40 years. You'd need to wear a N99 particulate respirator and do it in front of a ventilation system. That's why when you 3D print ABS or HIPS you're supposed to have a safe ventilation room or some sort of filtration system but I guess people are just going to be retarded. They're in for a shock in their 50s and 60s.

thats why i noted watch out for fumes, the point is to heat the plastic until it warms and softens at the tip, beyond that it will catch on fire and burn quite well, which is quite poisonous to inhale.

So I have a question but I don't know how to phrase it so I included a picture to try to explain it.

I'm going to try panel lining for the first time (I have a few of different color gunpla pens) but I'm having trouble to distinguish which areas I should line and which I shouldn't. I have image to try to explain my autisic reasoning, basically it's trying to show the side view of the plastic.

1. obvious that the channel should be lined
2. kind of questionable but if there is a slight channel I should still line it
3. shouldn't
4. if the area isn't that large like a small vent, slot, or wider than normal panel channel i should just fill in the entire area
5. shouldn't

I feel like I should do all the 1 areas first and see how it looks and then move onto the 2 and 4 areas if it doesn't look too busy.

Also: The model has dark red and purple, would these areas look good with brown panel lining?
>>
>>5893532
any lines every line all the damn line
>>
>>5893532
All lines and creases.

Black /Grey for whites

Brown for reds, yellows and blues

Use blue/red for purple. Just try it once if it doesn't look good use black
>>
>>5893532
That's a pretty good chart you made, and yes, you're pretty much right. Honestly, most people I see overline by lining every single thing making it look like a toy, which is ok if that's what you're going for, I guess. But yeah, do what you're planning and maybe try out the other types to see if that's something you want.

Generally, yes, brown would be good for that, but try first in hard to see area to see if you like it, and if it's too faint because the red or purple are too dark, using black would be fine too.
>>
I've spent 7+ hours a day since Friday building MG Nu ver. Ka, and it had simultaneously been the most fun and grueling gunpla experience I've had so far. I still have panel lines and about 50% of the waterslides left to apply.

I have a RG nanju and a MG thunderbolt coming Tuesday but I'm so burnt out on building right now I don't know when I'll feel like making them. Anyone else ever feel like this?

Can anyone tell me how trust worthy is mandrake? And how long does it take the items to be delivered?
>>
>>5893841
Very trustworthy, I've only had positive experiences. I order mostly with RSAL to get a good shipping price, and they usually take about two weeks.
>>
>>5893841
Completely trustworthy. Shipping times vary entirely by where you live, and they have charts somewhere on their site for that.
I have used RSAL a lot, but when I can I opt for EMS or DHL. My last RSAL from Mandarake was shipped out July 31, and arrived Aug 29. It spent 21 days at the "Origin Post is Preparing Shipment" stage. Sure, it's a lot cheaper. But when it takes 3 weeks to clear customs, you start wondering if they lost it. That doesn't happen with the better shipping options.
>>
>>5892774
I bought, like, 7 different sets of decals from samueldecal, and none of them had any problems if my experience is of any help to you
