And he did had (some) restrictions back then so now that he can do pretty much what ever he wants he have no clue what to do but to hash out Mazingers and Devilmans reboots and retellings. Personally I'll probably be buying this figure but I haven't actually seen the anime other than a few clips here and there, I'm just a big fan of the manga. Is the anime any good? It's been like on my list of things to "get around to eventually" for a long time.

It's what most early 70's anime were. None of them were that great with the exception of Lupin III. Devilman suffers from being very episodic and not having an actual story. Each episode is him fighting demons that want to kill him and the people he cares about. It was aimed towards kids if I remember correctly, but there's no way you can show a child this nowadays. You see pretty brutal fights, blood, decapitations, legit murder, pretty frightening designs and even nudity. I think it can be real fun to watch but be aware that each episode follows the same formula with an occasional surprise here and there.

I watched the OVAs which is how most people know devilman, but I honestly found them to be pretty mediocre. The origin they did for the OVA was completely different and not as cool or as dark as the origin in the series and even the manga I believe. Also in the OVA they introduced the character Ryo who I never even heard of cause he wasnt in the series, so I thought that was kinda dumb. I imagine he's in the manga which would make sense, though I haven't read it. The 2nd OVA I enjoyed a little more cause you got to see more Devilman in it. The 3rd one which I guess was a Pay Per View special called Amon which is absolutely brutal to watch especially after watching the 39 episode series and the 2 OVAs. One of the reasons why I didn't like the OVAs that much was because they weren't a weird or as dark as I wanted them to be, but Amon fixed that x1000. I don't know if its a good thing though. I finished it with kind of a depressed feeling inside me. Characters who you've seen throughout the history of the franchise end up getting brutally murdered right in front of you. So much fucked up gore and shit. I'm completely desensitized when it comes to any kind of violence, but when it happens to characters you care about, it gets to you. It's kinda odd that I complain because they finally did what I wanted them to do and felt sad by it.

I should also mention the Devilman crossover OVA's

There's one called Mazinger Z vs Devilman which I believe came out the same year the 1972 Devilman series and Mazinger Z series ended. Even though it had much better art and animation due to the bigger budget than both the series, I would not recommend it to a fan of Devilman because the OVA did him no justice. They gave most of the spotlight to Mazinger Z who ends up saving Devilman twice as well as being the one who defeats the enemy at the end and his music playing during the end credits. Was really a Mazinger Z special more than anything else which made me hate it.

The other crossover is Cyborg 009 vs Devilman which I really enjoyed even though they could of done more with it. Really great art and animation (especially after that piece of shit CGI Cyborg 009 film) I felt they both were both used equally for the most part. Good fights, and fun characters.it's on Netflix if you wanna watch it


Last thing I should mention is the Devil Lady series which is a re-imagining of the Devilman story but with a female MC. I was excited to watch it, but honestly it was pretty bland. Pretty slow, no interesting characters, no real over the time action/violence. I didn't care for it that much, but if you're interested, give it a watch. Had some good stuff in it.
