If you look carefully, the supporting bars are facing to the outside. That's why the shelves fell down. He didn't assemble the case properly.

Real talk

With proper assembly, how reliable are detolfs?
>>
>>5857683
They're pretty reliable. Just make sure you don't put too much on one shelf (as in large polystone statues or some shit).

Also, only install one magnet on the door and put 2-3 layers of masking tape on the metal part of the door. This is so it's easier to open it and the metal frames won't shake.

I've heard stories of Detolfs just straight up shattering randomly for no apparent reason...so there's that.

I personally have 4, and I've moved them (while assembled) 2 different times. Once from my 3rd floor apartment to a house I rented, then again from that house to my current house. Never had a problem with them breaking or cracking or anything (stuffed them with pillows and taped them up each time). Hell, I was even a retard my first time setting up a Detolf and reversed the brackets like >>5857261. Put all the shelves in the Detolf, placed a few figures in there, closed the shelf and walked away to get something to eat. While in the kitchen I heard a smashing sound and I just KNEW all the glass had broken. But when I got in there, all the glass shelves had fallen, but were still in one piece.

So yea, my personal experience is that they're pretty reliable. Mine creak at random sometimes though. I heard that has to do with the glass expanding and contracting due to temperature (which is apparently normal). Other than that, no complaints.

They probably only randomly shatter because of too much stress, likely caused by the user being a fat fuck who leans too hard on things or a fatfuck who puts too much crap onto each shelf.

Because of how glass is composed, you'll get no warning, as they won't show any fractures or stress marks. So it only looks like they randomly shatter, but in reality, it's because micro-fractures caused by fat fucks ham handing their furniture.
>>
>>5857774
The won't "randomly" shatter, It's tempered glass.

My best guess would be whoever put it together has over tightened the screws holding the whole assembly together for that to even be a possibility.

For a door to one to shatter their would need to be some kind of pressure or impact applied as well.
>>
>>5857774
Why would you put the case behind an inward-swinging door? That just sounds like a recipe for disaster
>>
>>5858720
probably the same reason people put a hundred figures on every shelf: ITS SO I CAN FIT EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE
>>
>>5857494
Have you heard about this?
>>
>>5857774
>for no apparent reason
According to /o/, warm glass + sudden cold air for a number of times.
>>
>>5858690
You could be right. But that's not just one instance. There are quite a few stories of people hearing a loud "BANG" in the middle of the night like someone just fired a gun, only to find their Detolf shattered in their collection room.
>>

>>
My son knows better not to touch my toys. Once he had a friend over while I still was at work. Came home to find out they had played with _ALL_ my toys. I don't let his friend came over anymore.
>>
>>5857239
My guess is he had his bookcase attached to the wall but not securely enough to prevent it from toppling forward just enough that violent jostling caused the shelves to come out. There is zero chance the shelves would have failed otherwise because they look like they are in one piece and so are the metal dows.

>>5857683
>With proper assembly, how reliable are detolfs?
Wood is good, glass is ass.

I would never trust glass because it's failure is sudden and dramatic with no real signs. Wood shows signs of bowing, cracking, etc. You can get a "partial failure" with wood where it might bust through one of the dows with a super heavy load but still stay wedged up. As a 140lb kid and with 30lbs of magazines loaded onto a shelf I one time stepped up on it causing it to break through one of the dows. The shelf still stayed in place though so I could remove stuff safely. That's an extreme as fuck load for a cheap ass bookcase with a weight limit of 40lbs. Toys will never even get close to reaching the breaking point for wood, even Walmart bookcases.

>mfw people display their figs in a glass shef
I'd never do that, seems utterly retarded. glass is ok for display doors, nothing that keeps it under stress, but using it for structure is retarded as fuck, glass is fragile as shit, even tightening some screws a little too much can cause denting which ultimately leads to breaking
Get a real wooden shelf, a book shelf for instance, or a tv shelf thing, whatever the name is, with lots of compartments. It is a little more expensive, but it guarentees a solid shelf which won't break
Even Ikea shelves are better than glass
>>
>>5858742
Jay Leno get out.
>>
I live in earthquake zone, so I would never think of displaying my figures too far from ground. And certainly not in glass display cases like detolf.

I also keep some toys in boxes, but that doesn't really have anything to do with earthquake protection, just purchases I regret I'd rather forget about.
>>
>>5860176
Cases like these use tempered glass, which is much more durable. I won't lie and say I don't worry a little, but my concern is with temperature fluctuations.

Well, that and how my new case doesn't have metal shelf supports. The shelves rest on tall, plastic caps screwed into pre-drilled holes on the glass sides. It's not like I'm putting statueshit on them, but still.
>>
>>5860176
glass looks nice though. maybe not detolfs honestly, but for $65 each it'll do.
>>
Does anyone know what figure is on the bottom right shelf in OP's pic?

There are people that keep sideshow premium format and 1/4 scale hot toys on standard detolf shelves. There's a pretty high chance that yours will never break if you put it to together correctly.

Should I be concerned about how thin the gap between one of the panels and door is in the center? I had it for about a year and I did notice this when putting it together, but I was never able to fix.
>>
>>5885010
I'm pretty sure that's normal. There should be some gaps between the panels and the door (they don't need to touch each other exactly).
