Finally got one of my grails for a cheap cheap price.

I'm so happy.

Anybody up for a Mighty Max general ?
>>
Is it complete?
>>
Loved Mighty Max as a kid and often check ebay for the toys, but can't bring myself to pull the trigger ever when I've already got so much stuff and there's so little adult play value. Still some of my favorite toys ever, like the big lava guy that opened up into a playset.

>>5837154

Yeah, complete ! There's lots of those on ebay, but they're usually either barebones or go for 90+ $

An excellent bargain. Same seller also had pic related. Also complete.
>>
>>5837162
Aaaayyyyy there it is. One of my favorites. Probably gonna go get one now baka
>>
>>5837160

The horror theme in mighty max just speaks to me. Also most of the playsets are relatively small and the range didnt last for years and years so it's very easy to collect. Some of the later waves stuff can be hard to obtain (the second series of shrunken heads and those pointless sets that couldnt open) but I can live without those.
>>
>>5837162
I recently moved house and found most of that big fucker in a box.

Sadly half the little pieces were missing so I got rid of it. Really wish I'd kept better care of my toys as a kid.
>>
>>5837199

I also have an incomplete one, maybe I could've completed yours ! Heh.

I keep all my incomplete mighty max stuff in a box, never know when it might come in handy...
>>
>>5837130
thats a grail? i have one. missing almost everything though...
>>
>>5837768

It is for me, I am a man of simple tastes. Mighty Max is the only "childhood line" I actively collect. And finding one in perfect condition for cheap is such a treat.

To be honest I could've bought it a million times, but I didnt want to spend a 100 euros on it. Minor grail ? I dunno, it fucking pleases me though.

Now to get more doom zones and horror heads !

Like I said, do not get hung up on the "grail" term, I use it for any toy that I've been wanting for a long time but never got for whatever reason. Cybertron Optimus Prime also falls under that category, it's not crazy rare... But I want it someday.

Also, due to the nature of mighty max, the chances that it's incomplete are pretty high.
>>
>>5837130
A shop near me got a bunch of MM stuff a few years ago and was selling everything incomplete but priced at current values, then they had a huge bag of misc. parts for sale. Fucking lazy ass shop. I remember buying some mystery bag just to get a part I needed.

Ive seen some people use white whales and grails interchangably.

To me, grail is super rare. Like Many ice man figures are rare. Secret wars, x2 movie ice man, bobby drake x-men classics. Funny how ice man is rare so often.

A white whale is just out of YOUR reach, you are hunting for it, but others may not care.

If Baltan is that Ultraman Monster (I can't into ultraman), then that's a 66 action figure I think.

>>5839819

Persks of having an extra incomplete magus : I was able to put 1 in each leg (I'm fairly sure that was the plan at some point during the design of the toy, since there's indentations to place the bike in both)
>>
>>5840628
It was the plan, but the second bike was ditched in order to have a place to store Norman. It was explained years ago by the designer in a Mighty Max forum.
>>
>>5840835

Thanks, I wasnt aware of that. I never really liked having Norman rattling around in the leg. I just shove him near the prison. It's a bit tricky to do though.

BTW, speaking about miniature placement in the playsets. Where are you supposed to stick max and warmonger in skull island ? I can't seem to find a spot to park their asses.
>>
>>5842597
Skull island? Do you mean Skull Mountain? Max has a place to be attached at the left of the eye catapult, but as far as Warmonger goes there's nothing as far as I know. I remember searching for it several times when I was a kid to no avail.
>>
I love Mighty Max. I've only recently gotten back into the line, but the amount of detail/easter eggs in each set is just exciting to find.

Too lazy to look up all of the correct names, but so far I have Dragon Island, zombie hand, man eater (shark), and Terror Talons/Dead Starr.

I really need a Skull Dungeon as that was my favorite as a kid.
>>
>>5843626
>I really need a Skull Dungeon as that was my favorite as a kid.

That was the first one I had as a kid, still remember my surprise when I discovered the hidden trap door. Good times.

I guess my favorite was Doom Dragon.
>>
>>5842763

Indeed, skull mountain. Got my big playsets mixed up. Can't believe I missed that Max spot, been looking for that for hours. I guess Warmonger will remain a mystery.

>>5843626

I really need to get my hand on Skull Dungeon too. It's just great. I really think the biggest flaw with a lot of doom sets is the lack of "vertical" areas, and I think this set has some of the best in the entire series. And "the Hand" forever remains one of the coolest.
>>
>>5839725
I remember the spring for the tongue of the maggot thing being crazy powerful.
>>
>>5844704

Well if it's similar to the mechanical hammerhead shark in Skull Mountain... It's pretty bloody powerful. First time I tried it it sent Max Flying across the room. Thought I was going to lose it !

No wonder these are hard to find complete !
>>
>>5844783
>>5844704

Guy who owns both Skull Mountain and Dragon Island and posted pics here, I think the Mecha Hammerhead spring is a bit stronger than the slug one. I remember how much it hurt when that thing hit one of my fingernails when I wad a kid.
>>
Awesome finds, OP.
I just bought Skull Mountain and Dragon Island a few months ago, never regreted it.
If this thread is here Friday I'll post "The Conqueror," one of the smaller sets and the only non-island I could find with Max, Norman, and Virgil.

As much as I fucking love Mighty Max, there was some baffling, worthless shit in the line.

The set I like the least for now has to be Freako.

The figures are, ok I guess (but I wish we got the titular character), but the playset is fucking awful. Why is a VERTICAL scene represented on the horizontal plane ? What is up with the guys on the top part ? What's with the gash on Freako's face that doesnt even pay off when the set's open ? What's with the colors ????

Just shit.

Yeah, the show episode was pretty cool, but the playset was garbage. It's like they didn't even try.

He looks half asleep and has a weird posture. His left hand is molded so he's supposed to be touching the floor, which only makes him look sillier.

Right hand holds a flaming sword of DOOM and is a missile. His "hair" turns out to be a lava thingie.

>I don't know if I'll ever get used to that "white whale" term. Not nearly as catchy as "grail". I do not keep up with terminology.

They have different meanings in literature. Just think of their origin. A white Whale has been attributed to current wave stuff or a few years old and then becomes older. Maybe its rare, maybe not, but out of your reach and you still long for it. A casual collector may pass it up, cause it's not their white whale.

Grail should really be rare. Like laser beast battle beasts rare, or different colored light saber star wars toy rare. Just....impossible. A complete skull mountain DOES sound rare though, because of all the little pieces can go missing. It's not super holy grail status, it can be white whale, it could be both.
>>
>>5854559

There's quite a few complete ones on ebay right now. They're just too expensive for my proletarian wallet.

I understand the difference, it's just that... I dunno. White whale does not speak to me. I'm not even sure it has an equivalent in french. Maybe that's the problem. All in all, it's not all that important, isnt it ? It was mostly an excuse to start talking about awesome mighty max toys

Nice. Do you have a shot of the inside, just out of curiosity? Love me some skellingtons.

I rewatched the series on Kisscartoon recently--the other head you've got there, Spike, was some sort of Norse zombie who couldn't be killed. A little surprised it got a set with no figure. The guy took a branch straight through the head and kept on going, even broke off a smaller limb and rammed it up his own nose, shouting, "YOU CAN'T HURT ME NORMAN. FEELS GOOD!"
This whole series and toyline was a beautiful orchestration of nightmare fuel and badassery.

I feel compelled to share some of my favorite sets. Here's Dino Lab, which is by far my favorite doom stone out of the ones I currently have.

Outer shell looks pretty neat, even if the triceratops horns are comically small.

I feel it really shines in the inside though.

Comes with a standard looking max, Fat mad Scientist, Velocyraptor (tail becomes horn when closed) & Pterodactyl (beak becomes horn when closed).

The Raptor cage can be opened and closed, and there's some nice usable vertical space, which is always one of my favourite features for a doom zone to have. Dr Zygote fits nicely even on the shallow platform topside.

And the other play features are pretty neat. The volcano (the last horn on the triceratops) opens to reveal technological gizmos and a laser cannon for Max to use !

I also love the hand coming out of the puddle under the bridge. Just a neat detail.

Please contribute some of your favourites too !

I bought a luggage bag filled with these from a yard sale on the cheap. I was so excited. Now they're back in my basement probably going to a yardsale of my one. I have no room for them!
>>
Not exactly /toy/, but I wish they'd release the show on some form of disc, bluray or dvd.

That'd be neat. The vhs rips on youtube are quite awful.

If you were a frenchfag I'd make you an offer on the spot

>>5866527
I'd potentially be willing to buy them off you if the price is right
>>

Today's haul.

Nothing too great, but Kabon has a neat design.

Reminds me of the final boss from Splatterhouse.

Won an auction for three horror head and 4 shrunken heads and the seller was nice enough to include, free of charge, the warthog scalp and a near complete set of heroes & enemies figures.

Now that's a pleasant surprise !

Removed Menasor & Bruticus to display some Mighty Max Sets for a change of scenery.

Dude, that's awesome. The raised platform, the way you layer the sets behind one another, and posing Skullmaster and the Mighty team around the mountain make it look like a purposeful display, rather than a bunch of toys just left in the open.

Incidentally, what sets have that Skullmaster, Max, Virgil, and Norman? They look so much livelier than "Holding his fists up for some reason" Max, "I wish I were home, my feet hurt" Norman, and "Silently judging your penis" Virgil like in most sets.

Thanks

They're from one of these "Heroes & Enemies" figures set. Set N°6 I believe.

Here's a potato quality pic of the full set. It was given to me for free as a bonus with an ebay auction, it's only missing the cobra guy on the right.

I found a bag of like a half dozen Mighty Max playsets at a church thrift store. Turned out it was just the playsets and only like one villain figure.

That's the biggest problem with collecting mighty max, a lot of them are very incomplete.

A few years ago I bought a few lots of incomplete sets for cheap to mix & match and complete them as I go, but lately people on ebay have been selling them for god damn fortunes, even if they're grossly incomplete. Remember when you could buy cheap stuff on ebay ?

I love how all the sets have a hidden lizard and other things in the mould!
>>
>>5854860
how was the storyline different?
>>
As a kid I remember later sets were really uninspiring, but in hindsight it was basically since Mattel took over and we got the cartoon "accurate" Max. The first few Mattel sets were pretty decent even if not as imaginative but later ones they were pretty bare.

These toys had tons of gruesome details sculpted in, I'm surprised they flew back then.

Not dure if any of you can help me here but when I was little I remember having two Mighty Max esque toys.

Not sure if they were actually mighty max or one of the knock off toys that followed.

One was a snake about the size of a standard mighty max toy, can't remember the playset inside too well.

The other was a triceratops skull that opened into a archeological site if I remember correctly.

Any help identifying them would be great. Please and thanks.

Pic unrelated.
>>
>>5893047
I should mention it was a snakes head, and not the full body one seen above.
>>
>>5893047

You know what, that archeological site thing does ring a bell... I'll think about it.

Btw, when I was a kid, I had a weird mighty max knock off that was pretty cool.

It was the shape of a SNES controller, and when you opened it, it looked like Blanka's Stage from Street Fighter II. Came with a E.Honda & Ryu... But I have faint memories of seeing one with Chun-Li and some other character I don't remember.

Slays the Dragon and Blows Up Mutasaurus
>>
>>5893128
Negatory on both of those.

The triceratops skull actually looked like a triceratops skull color and all.

And the snake was very reminisant of a diamond back almost.

Although I did actually have Slays at one point, so thanks for the trip down memory lane m8 :)

Okay I found the Triceratops.

Turns out it was a Micro Machine playset done by Nat Geo.
