For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

Anyways, I come to you guys with a bit of a conundrum I posted last thread. I may have gotten my hands on a Daibadi/Dimension Diver Aphrodite A garage kit. A couple of other dudes in the Daibadi thread also want some, so I'm trying to find recasters or the like so we can get some copies and distribute them to the guys interested.

If any of you guys know any recasters, or have skills in this, do tell or visit the thread sometime.

Pretty sure it was one or two guys who really disliked the fact that the thread was 95% gunpla

>gunpla are kiddie toys
>no skill required
>gunpla discussion all day erry day
>no one ever answers non gunpla questions
>non gunpla posts were very quickly drowned out
Were some of the arguments brought up.

Shitposting happened and the dude forced his Scale Model thread with "no gaypla allowed" in the OP. More shitposting occurred when the thread was deleted, and then the moderate faction created what was to be the current Scale Model general and it stuck.

Personally I was against the split, but I guess it worked out okay in the end.

It was the first RG so bandai didn't really know all the problems that would arise from a 1/144 inner frame. It's basically a grenade.
If you wanted a decent 1/144 RX78, I'd probably suggest the hguc G30th since it has all the panel lines from the RG.
>>
>>5788273
>It's basically a grenade.
What does that mean, parts fall off? Could you just glue lose parts in place?
>>
>>5788228
A couple of guys got mad about the low amount of non robot posts and how few people were responding to them so they complained and started their own threads. Then they had their own division as it turned out they were being started by a guy who actively hates gunpla and would shitpost anything he percieved as not belonging in his thread.

what do you think of pre shading your kit ? do this really help to have a more realistic kit or this is kind of overplay ? i dont see a lot of modelist using this technique in "classic" modeling. thanks

I've come to like doing it. I don't necessarily know about realistic, but it certainly adds more depth to the model and looks cool. And once you get the hang of it shading/highlighting only adds like a night or two of extra effort to the painting process.

What do you guys think of this?

I honestly haven't been excited about any kit for the new Try OAV. This just looks kind of boring to me.
>>
>>5788479
No. The point of preshading is to create realistic shadowing in areas that might not be subject to proper natural shading due to the scale. It's like ambient occlusion in games.

Putting it on panel lines is stupid and makes no sense. Corners? Yes. Crevices? Yes. Deep lines and gouges or details hidden underneath something like that Kshatriya's leg armor? Yes. Panel lines? No, especially not if the shading bleeds outside of the damn panel lines. It's become less about realistic shading and more about random detailing.

>>
>>5788878
It's mostly only the limbs that have inner frame nowadays outside of the IBO HG. A revive Zeta would need a substantial amount of new parts. Not saying it's not in the works/on the way, just that it probably won't be reusing Scramble gundam runners.

Wouldn't the ZZ be less fragile since it's a partsformer? Then again, the last RG with a core fighter was the GP01, and people have mixed opinions on the stability of that, but a ZZ would probably at least be sturdier than the Zeta.

>>
>>5788515
I don't mind the colour. I think it would've looked better if the backpack had an extra middle part that formed a bird head in flight mode.
>>
>>5789088
To my knowledge the Revive and the red warrior share no parts. Each of the Revive releases so far have been an all new mold. I think even the Hyaku shiki is going to be a new mold (Using the mega-shiki would mean using the delta plus runners, which are several years old now, use the old polycap tree and layout, and would have a ton of superfluous parts wasted).
>>
>>5789096
I think the Red Warrior was the prototype for the Revive RX, some aspects are similar but improved.

Thanks for using my Ez8, GG.
I also tried spraying Tamiya acrylics thinned with their own acrylic thinner and Mr Leveling Thinner, and here are the results. The left is acrylic thinner and right is the leveling thinner and each has been cured to for 24 hours. It looks like both still scratch off about the same. I haven't tried straight up lacquer paint yet, but I'm guessing all paint will scratch off probably. Good to know of thinner options though.

Primer and topcoat help a lot for scratches, also if your acrylic is water based you should let it cure for longer, like a week

I primed the spoons with Mr Surfacer 1000, and even with primer and topcoat, paint scratching still occurs. For example, my Ez8 in the op image, you can see a big spot of scratched paint on its left bicep near the should bit that would make contact with it a lot. The lacquer primer and topcoat had a few hours to cure as well. I didn't know about water-based acrylics needing a week and after looking up Tamiya acrylics being water-based, I think I'll give that a shot with my next project. Thanks!
>>5789871
That's true, it does look smoother. Right now, I've still got 1 1/5 bottles of Tamiya acrylic thinner left that I think I'll go through first before exclusively using Leveling Thinner. The quality man in me says to switch now, but the value-oriented me is saying to finish what supplies I have right now first.

And for anyone that wants to thin Tamiya with Mr. Leveling Thinner, the ratio is the same as if thinning lacquer paints with lacquer thinner, 1:2, paint to thinner

Tamiya acrylics are synthetic acrylic. With lacquer thinner you're going to get near lacquer qualities and shouldn't take a week to cure. The reason water based and weak acrylics take long to cure is because the moisture needs to gas out in a dry environment but lacquer thinner evaporates rapidly.

Few things to note. Even with a primer you need to prepare your surface. That means washing thoroughly and preferably giving it a good sanding with a medium grit. This is just basic surface prep and even a little bit of oil or grease can ruin adhesion. To put this into perspective, surface prep can make the difference between a few lbs of strength on a superglue weld vs a dozen lbs, it's huge.

After your prime you should check if it's smooth, you don't want it to be grainy and textured but you don't want it to be like a gloss coat, sanding here with a high grit may help. Mechanical grip counts for a lot. And keep in mind lacquer takes at least a day for a full cure.
>>

Ah, then good to know about what Tamiya really is.

Before any serious painting job, I always be sure to prep, soaking all my parts in soapy water for hours and leaving to dry for pretty much a day.

The pieces feel smooth enough to the touch after priming, unless Surfacer 1000 can't achieve the amount of smoothness you're saying by itself. I've read many sources giving what is the curing time for acrylics and lacquers, with the general consensus being that acrylics take 24 hours and lacquers 1-2 hours, but I'll try 24 hours each and see my results.
>>

>The pieces feel smooth enough to the touch after priming, unless Surfacer 1000 can't achieve the amount of smoothness you're saying by itself.
You want it to look flat but without any rough texture. If it's glossy or semi-glossy it's not ideal.

It does look flat and does not have a rough texture then.

hey friends. I've been working on some Zoids lately and before I start working on my Command Wolf and Liger Zero (Jager CAS, complete box) renewal/re-release I wanted to grab a couple of customize parts.

I looked through a few lists and I've got the part #s, but does anyone know a good place and/or vendors, etc where I can actually buy them? Amazon and ebay is mostly new Kotobukiya HMM, or really, really old Tomy (which aren't peices I'd want to use), and the big three easy mode (amiami, 1099, HLJ) just have a single part (which is one I'd buy and muck around with, but not much for selection).

Any advice or suggestions?
>>
>>5788229
I really, really like Mur. Surfacer 1200 and 1500. It thins very well (I was lucky and found a bottle of the drying retardend+lacquer thinner and Mr. Surfacer in the same store), lays down very well, and sands very nicely. My only regret is that I used it all up and now if I want to do a good job I need to buy more.
>>
>>5790511
Its probably mandatory to buy a stand for it with how top heavy it is. The stock wing innerframe isn't probably able to handle having that.

I got some Mr. White Putty tried filling some seam lines for the first time. Squeezing out a dab onto a toothpick and spreading it, I found that it started clumping really quickly. Am I doing something wrong, or is that just how it works. Also, should I have gotten tamiya or some other putty instead? The Mr. Putty was cheaper and the Chinese guy at the counter said it was "most popular brand"
>>
>>5790893
GSI is pretty popular. If it smells like solvent I'd try using a teeny bit of thinner and turning it into more of a paste.

I think I have a tube of Tamiya that I've never used, but my favorite filler is Mr. Surfacer and Games Workshop's Liquid Green Stuff (which is an acryl and can be thinned with water and brushed on). I have a tube of Testor's putty that I used on a Command Wolf and that was a big fucking mess.
>>
>>5790893
I use Mr Dissolved Putty (for some things anyway) and you can thin that with lacquer thinner so I assume the same thing applies to the non-dissolved version.
>>
>>5790893
Mr. White Putty is trash imo. I prefer the Tamiya putties and Mr Surfacer 500.

I have two tricky Z-related painting questions for you fellas.

1. I want to paint the internals of the Zssa gunmetal, but want the missiles to stay red. What is the best way to go about this?

2. How on earth do you paint in those white lines on the Zudah? Crazy good hand control?
>>
>>5791171
I'm not sure myself, but maybe next time you should ask questions like that before you buy. Just a tip for the future.
>>
>>5791194
Yeah I normally check this kind of thing but I really wanted to finally get this kit regardless of flaws, and loose joints are fixable so I should be fine. Thanks for the tip though.

For the white lines on the Zudah, I think they've got a bit on an indent on them. So just follow the lines and don't mess up.

Noob question I guess

So I'm building a Volks kit that requires you to cement parts together. Most parts are loose fitted and fall out the moment you move the kit.

I plan on painting the kit, but how do I go about painting if I need to cement parts together? Do I just have to mask off sections that require different colors? Obviously I can't spray paint parts individually then expect them to hold together with cement.

What do you guys do when a kit requires you to cement parts and paint? What would be the path that would cause me the least grief? I've been putting off this kit for months now because I'm afraid to proceed with the next step.

I was considering the very same kit, and was turned off by the need for cement and the tiny parts. I'm far from expert, but it seems to me that the best way would be to build it and stop periodically to paint after segments are built and are recognizable, but before completing the entire model.
Unless you're really focused and have tons of time, in which case you could paint first. But that would require some rather extreme patience.

they do vary in height depending on design, most sit between hg & mg in size, with some exceptions. The older ones are definitely better value for money than the new ones (the next & variable infinity series are the best). They seem to be getting smaller & more expensive with every release. >>5792938
Ok yeah but how does glue fit into the equation? Is it ok to cement 2 parts that have already been painted? Won't that fall apart because you aren't bonding the actual plastic but just paint?

What about in cases where 1 part is opaque and the other is translucent? Once painted, the translucent part will just look smudged from behind once you cement it, no?
>>
>>5793038

just checked, they reissued the normal alliyah and the alicia unsung, nineball seraph, lahire stacis & the noblisse oblige. They seem to restock every couple of days if they go out so koto is still on the production run. With kits that good on reissue it makes it hard to justify buying the new tiny ones.
>>
>>5793074

it comes down to common sense. sand joining surfaces bare before gluing, in the case of transparent parts, use transparent glue designed for clear parts, your call if its easier to pre paint the opaque parts before assembling or assembling & masking the transparent parts off after.

Usually got the best engineering and it's just a great design. I'm wanting to get a Mega Size RX next. The amount of display in Gundam Front sold me on it regardless of how much of a large HG it really is.

Looks alright if a little boring. Line it and put some decals, or just a simple stripe of color would improve it.
>>
>>5793401

You've missed a nub on the top of the right chest vent, it could do with some panel lines, but otherwise pretty good for your first attempt.
>>
>>5793401
looks aight. I'd panel line and sticker/waterslide that bitch though. It's going to give it so much more depth with just those two simple things.
>>
>>5792986
Can you imagine it? Their Formula skell kit might be too small to accommodate Frame Arms parts or the koto option sets?

You think it might be plausible?

If they were compatible I would grab those two other FA kits and make a Verus knockoff.
>>
So guys, when you store custom mixed paint into a jar, how much acrylic medium and/or retarder do you add in to make it last a couple weeks?

And the other thing: How much solvent(99% iso/distilled water/vallejo thinner) do you add in compared to thinning it for actual work?
>>
>>5793458
I use 33mm jars with gaskets, so I seal that shit as tight as I think I can. I haven't painted since last fall or something and everything is still pretty useable, at least looking through the jars.

It really depends on how air tight you can get your containers.

>>
>>5793801
Lightning Saix is cool. My friend built one in front of me.

I think it's probably got the best articulation of the toes/claws that I've seen of the felinid/vulpid Zoids. I haven't seen a Gun Sniper in person so I can't compare it to the dinosaur types.

My original RHI-3 (white) Command Wolf was also excellent out of the box. The only reason progress on that has stalled is because I lost the jaw and melted a "shoulder" pad.
>>
>>5793726
Engineering speaking I'd say that the graze ein is actually one of the worst Graze. The closed fists it comes with look like shit, the feet aren't on very secure and are very easy to see becoming loose as hell and falling off easily over time, and the pile drivers on the arms love to fall off.

It's otherwise solid though and I love mine.

Anyone tried using a Frame Arms architect as a 2nd frame for a 1/100 Gusion/Rebake?

I picked up the 1/100 version for the Rebake specifically, but it seems a waste to not use the Gusion armor for something.
I have a couple sets of Ballden arms, but I was wondering if anyone had attempted something similar with one of the bare Frame Arms frames. The ballden arms parts don't look sturdy enough.
I'm sure I'll end up doing lots of cutting either way, just looking for good posability once I'm done. Thanks in advance.

Sloppy, sloppy most-of-it-was-built-from-midnight-to-3-AM build.

I like how blacked out and stealth it is, though. There aren't even any decals beyond a small sheet of Brad's little rose that are optional.

I might go back and detail it later.
>>
>>5794169
should've bought this.
someone said that the connection in the torso snaps very easily that's why I bought Saix
>>
>>5794179
I can see that happening. It didn't feel super secure, but that's where the articulation is.

I'm not the type of person to continuously pose and play with my models, though; I like to get them set once or twice or three times and that's how they stay so I'm not super worried about it.

I wish I had a quality painting station set up so I could airbrush comfortably. I've got 1.9 Command Wolves, Zero Jager, and some Tamiya models I want to work on but only if I can get them just right.
>>
I wonder what they will come up with if IBO kits get into build fighters.

>>5794397
We'll probably see various custom grazes if BF gets a third season, we definitely won't see any during the OVAs
and by custom I mean its colored differently. I feel like a black gusion might also show up at some point, probably glossy.

It's frustrating how there are so many great designs in the Gundam mangas but everyone seems to want variations of the same suit over and over. Thunderbolt f.e has introduced a lot of great designs past where the ONAs end and it's sort of disappointing to seem no English speaking people even acknowledge them.
