For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

So I want to start handpainting soon and the more I research on brushes and paint the more confused I get.
What brushes do I need, is there like a kit somewhere for cheap that covers the basics?
Should I use Mr. Hobby or try to convert to Tamiya because all the basic colors for Mr. Hobby seem to be out of stock all the time?
Can I topcoat metallic painted parts matte or should I go gloss?

>>

Okay, so, just get yourself a simple set of detail brushes; nothing too complicated. I believe Tamiya sells a three bush set that should cover the basics.

Don't hand paint with Mr. color.

And always topcoat your metallics clear unless you want to more or less make them non-metallic anymore.
>>
>>5771181
Non-H is truly a magical category.
>>
>>5771157

I've been hand painting with Vallejo and it seems to come out pretty well most of the time. Just make sure if you use Vallejo to get their thinner, alcohol makes the paint stringy and water doesn't work very well.

I'm not a great painter so I may just be full of shit.

This is handbrushed. You want to get yourself soft brushes so the brushstrokes don't show up. I'd recommend sable brushes but it might be worth your time going to an art store and having a feel of them first to make sure you get the right thing.
I've not much experience with other paints but i tend to stick with vallejo model color, thinned 1:1.
I'd also gloss coat metallics but it's ultimately down to personal preference I guess.

I draw the lines on with a pencil and ruler then use some dymo tape to use as a guide. Score it with a hobby knife and then use the scribe. I use a set of chisels I got from samueldecal for scribing.

I've been building these for nearly twenty years now. At first it started as just trying to snap these together as fast as I could back when I was eight. I soon found the selection was rather lacking and pricey at my local Toys'R'Us. I moved on to hobby shops and getting better stuff.

I tried painting a couple gets but I had had brushes and had paint and knew NOTHING. Your posts have inspired me to step up my game so thank you. I'll be using the guide to do the best I can. I'm not getting any younger and I want to really wow people with these.

In the early releases with the English translated boxes they wanted to make it more like other US model lines with difficulty levels.

For most models this is a measure of how difficult it is to put together based on factors like gluing, painting, and small parts or photo-etch.

For gunpla it was based on the number of parts.

If you're in your 30s and used to build kits, the MGs now are retard-proof. Even the manuals take extra steps and assume you have no spatial orientation or knowledge of left vs. right.

Seems fairly straight forward though, just needs time put in. I'm nervous about sanding though, never built an MG kit, had what I think were HG? Didn't know how visible the nubs would be if I didn't sand properly. I'm assuming they keep them fairly out of sight on the finished product?

I'm looking for something that could fit on the MG zeta plus, I know the p-bandai exists with the extra parts but I have the regular release already unbuilt - I was looking at the SD zeta plus with all the parts for all variations including the HHC I'm just wondering if even that would work instead of attempting anything in styrene. I've just put my first kit together, an HG Kimaris I got from Barnes and Noble, and I have a couple questions. First, I kind of want an action base for the model but looking around I've seen a couple different types. Is there a way to know which one is the right one or will any of them work? Second, the weapon is very heavy and pulls the hand down which looks retarded. I wedged a piece of paper in the wrist so that it doesn't pull the hand down but I don't like how ghetto it looks. Do any of you guys have better solutions for an issue like this?
>>
>>5773608
Action Base 2 or the GP Base will fit 1/144 pegs, but the GP Base needs a screw to tighten the joint since it's weak as shit.

>>5773608
If you put superglue on the hand ball joint and let it dry, then put it back in and then it should get tighter.

Finally decided to build a few of these.
Super easy to just snap fit together but some parts are really bad about popping off. May get some modeling glue or something to fix it.

Best way to keep them together?

Gundam is not my kind of series, so I've not really touched any model kits before, but lately I've been getting into FSS and I'm starting to feel intense urges now that I know they don't have actual action figures.

But on the other hand, the designs from FSS all seem very intricate, so the kits look like they'd be very easy for an inexperienced builder and painter to fuck up. Is there anything I can start with, or should I buy something else to practice with?
>>
>>5773698
>should I buy something else to practice with?
Yes, get SD Gundams.

Just so you know, most FSS kits are resin. The few plastic kits that exist (Volks IMS and Wave 1/144) are expensive and require a moderate amount of skill to assemble, painting isn't optional. Stay the fuck away from Wave's 1/100 kits.
>>
>>5773640
Too big.
My first project involving lots of right angles is going to be a small box for my tools, like masking tape and so on, and I need something to check the angles of a thin box and separators inside it.
That kind of square is too big for the job.
>>
>>5773654
>>5773652
I think I will buy them for my Kabakali and Kämpfer.
>>
Should I get the Kampfer Amazing?
The reason why I'm on the fence is because I have like 11 kits in backlog. The main thing I'm worried about is that when I do want him he'll be out of stock everywhere.
>>
>>5773719
How much painting are we talking here? Gundam kits don't seem like they require much, so would I really be getting my money's worth if I bought those just to practice with?
>>
>>5773748
The Wave KOG is molded entirely in one color, understandably. That's the only one I can comment on, though.
>>
>>5773750
All that needs painting are the hands, waist, eyes/visor, speids, and some joints.

My best guess is that a standard model use sized alligator clip weighs about as much as a paper clip (because my food scale does go that low I don't have a gunpowder scale). In one pound, we have roughly 906 (+/- maybe...10?). In eight pounds, that's somewhere around 7,248 alligator clips. Hmm I wonder if I can find them by the pound somewhere.

Do you know how to make HIPS or ABS slurry? It's a little dangerous since you'll be mixing scrap plastic with a solvent but it should create a plastic slurry/putty that will bond with the same kind of plastic.

HIPS + plastic cement = polystyrene slurry
ABS + acetone = ABS slurry

Keep in mind there's always a risk that your kit will get damaged

I got some bad news for you: it doesn't work like that. None of the things humans do with their hands work like that.

Unless you are a literal robot, you can't just "load" a skill into yourself. You can have the most detailed step by step guide on earth and your first attempts will still look like shit.

Getting good at a manual skill like this takes practice which takes time AND money, more importantly you HAVE to enjoy the process of trying again and again in order to get better with each try. This is why folks here are saying it might not be a hobby for you.

One more point, if you are really into something, you want to know more about it and you find all sorts of information on it pretty quickly. Waiting passively on people to spoonfeed you means you are probably not that interested in that thing in the first place and you won't have the motivation to go through with it anyway.

Think about it.

Tamiya acrylic thinned with mr.color leveling thinner. Alclad II or mr.primer for primer.

>>5777577
Different kind of plastic. The bag won't melt. And it's probably for convenience. He can just toss the bag out when he's done instead of fussing with cleaning plastic out of a jar or dish.

>Tamiya acrylic thinned with mr.color leveling thinner. Alclad II or mr.primer for primer.
I've been told Tamiya acrylica with lacquer thinner isn't as tough as an actual lacquer. It was decent with their own lacquer thinner
>>
>>5777767
In my experience using it and mr.color paints, mr.color is more durable, but not by a huge amount and it requires more thinning. Tamiya is also easy to strip if you fuck up by just putting the part in windex for a few minutes. Both are fine though and it really comes down to preference.

So completely inconsequential? Decently tougher? Saying it's not tougher by a huge amount still sounds like it's pretty tough.
>>
>>5777829
Noticably tougher. Plastic on plastic rubbing will still scrape it off.

It's also worth noting that technically mr.color is also an acrylic, although P on P will scrape any paint off eventually.

So, I've been using dalong as a reference for years. But today I realized that I've been turned off to some actually very nice kits by dalong's decidedly yellow-tinted photos in the early days and heavy-handed panel lining (yes, I know he does it on purpose and why he does it).

Basically, are there any other good sources for straight-build reviews that have a pretty large catalog of kits? Preferably with better photography.

I have an idea for a zaku II in Darth vader /TIE colors and a corresponding TIE in Char colors, but would an ordinary TIE better represent a Zaku II or would a TIE advanced be better since it's Darth vaders custom?
(the ordinary TIE would be easier to paint though)

>money is something you'll have little of in this hobby.
Aside from the outlay on an airbrush and compressor, this is by far one of the cheapest hobbies I've ever had. Unless you have a crippling addiction to snap building 3 kits a week, this is actually a really cheap hobby.
>>
>>5778764
Comparatively to say Warhammer or hell even Train collecting, yeah it is a pretty cheap hobby.

>one of the cheapest hobbies
>airbrush and compressor
>vacuum pump
>vacuum chamber

>>
>>5778804
You can get good resin casts with just a vacuum chamber. Pressure pot is for perfect casts for clear resins but for this hobby almost perfect resin is acceptable. It'll be better than what e2046 gives you anyway.

You can get a vacuum set for under $200. If you do want to get a pressure chamber, a good pressure pot for under $200. A dedicated compressor for the pressure pot will be $100 to $150. And a little more for additional parts like fittings, hoses, etc. You're looking at about $600. Resin AND silicone from smooth-on will maybe cost the price of a single MG. Maybe $50 to $60. Oh, and more apoxie than you'll need in your life for this hobby is $20. For under $700 you're basically getting the ability to limited mass produce custom made parts with the best casting quality you'll get as far as your skill will allow.
