Honest question, its been years since touched lego anything.

I just found the first set of bionicle sitting in an old toy box, still in their tubes, manuals squished to hell, pieces intact.

Are these honestly worth anything to anyone or am I better off donating them to charity?

It's nice to see so much creativity put into Bionicle. When I was a kid I really loved them. Thing is, I loved to disassemble them,and build new things. So I ended up hating myself for the giant box of mangled pieces I created, and ultimately I kinda forgot about them. I'd really like to start collecting them again, but the last generations aren't exactly at my liking. Any suggestions? Recommendations?

Depends on the sets. A lot of the big sets or some rarer pieces like masks will fetch a good price, but most canister sets go for cheap. If you want some cash out of it you could try to split them up, but that's up to you!

If you don't like the recent ones, start with G1 Bionicles. Basically buy the ones you liked the most as a kid. There are checklists somewhere, so you can basically see every set that was available.

That's how they look before I clean them of the excess resin. I just leave them if they end up being flawed beyond usefulness (if there's a bit more dye than there should be, it can come out gummy, or sometimes there's just a giant air bubble ruining something).

Kind of tangentially related, I'm trying to decide pricing...

Mask of Water casts - $2 each
(The first Mask of Water mold had been re-purposed from a flawed method I initially built it with, so the remnant of a flawed sprued system has slightly mishhapen the middle fin on the back of the head. Also, the eyes and vents could be better - pic relates shows the progress from sprue to press method)

I'm trying to figure out what to do for dupes of masks that exist in mask packs. A lot of those are still pretty cheap. Guess I shouldn't bother with more common things, like blue kakamas and such, seems pretty dumb, even to pay $1 for something that is inferior to the original in every way - when the original is only $2.

In that vein, do you think people would be willing to pay $5 for a fake of a rare part? It seems kind of a steep price, but I want to make this worth the time... I guess it depends on the part.

For the pricing, I don't know how much work goes into them so I can't give too accurate of advice. I think as long as people know about you existing, bionicle collectors will be willing to pay 5 dollars for any reproduction rares, if not more.
I don't really see much purpose in selling masks made with a faulty mold, if you can just as simply remake the mold as you would to make any new ones, but if you mean that you're selling masks made with a good mold that come out bad, you could probably do that, as long as they attach and won't fall apart or anything.
In terms of mask pack redos, I'd say only offer them if they were much cheaper than authentic ones, but at that point it may just not be worth making them, unless they're very rare (like miscolors or masks that were rare to begin with)
And along with that, I guess always just leave the option for commissions open probably. Just charge them for the price of the mask to make the mold and cast as well as extra for the hassle of making a special one.

Good points. I figured $5 was a good price point because that's about what the modalt people charged last I saw. There's the mold making, which takes a good bit of time, varies depending on mask complexity. Then the clean-up, which also varies, but at the longest is... about fifteen minutes per the most complex masks? I haven't really timed it. Transparent resin takes at the very least, two days to cure if the part isn't too thin or complex, so that's something else.

The ones from the faulty mask of water mold are all solid, it's just the little idiosyncrasies on them that make me feel they should be worth less. The only bubble masks I've made so far were done with that mold, and I did hear people say they would pay for those, so... I will be making a better mold for that design, of course; it's just that I already have about 7 completed from that mold. But yeah, if there's anything I'd consider inferior that still happens to be passible, I'd mark it down.

It's kind of funny, when I think about $5 per part, it doesn't seem like much from the perspective of someone doing the work, but for my perspective on the buyer side, it seems like a lot. Then again, I tend to be stingy about these things. The $5 price is less of a turnoff for me when I think about really rare stuff though, and I think many others would feel the same way.

Easy. The skulls got axed because they weren't parent-friendly, the torso was a temporary piece, the core removal stuff was changed because the line already had a black dude with a staff, the kneecaps were removed because they were unstable, and shoulder pad was changed because the set looked unevent without the trophy belt.

Yeah. One thing I liked about the Chima ultrabuilds was that even though the system sets were silly caricatures, the ultrabuilds looked more brutal than what we're used to. The bad guys looked like baby-eating berzerkers. I'm confident that a CCBS Nexo Knights line would present a worthwhile representation of the technoknight concept. Plus Hugebricks would make a bouldertits Lavaria. That'd be awesome and funny as hell.

I'm noticing Lego is turning into a company who's main focus is to churn out licensed lines first and foremost above all else. Everyone knows Lego and everyone wants their IP to be made into Lego. Anyone else just ends up with the other brands like Megabloks.

You walk down the Lego isle nowadays and the original lines start to become lost in the sea of Disney, DC, Minecraft, Lotr, etc. Even the newest magazine is like 3/4ths licensed shit. Not saying original themes are getting phased out, but rather Lego seems to be putting most of its energy into licensed shit, City, Friends, and whatever singular boy theme is in season at the time. Right now being Nexo Knights. Ninjago and Bionicle are on the back burner. Everything else is instantly a lesser priority and as such is barely seen/heard of.

Yea, the combiners weren't that bad, but those horn pieces used as tail, just felt so wrong for me, I had to do my own tweaks.

The lack of promo material lately really is baffling, though. We got a whopping FIVE exclusive masks last year (even if one is nigh unobtainable), yet this year all we've seen is the Russian cape polybag, and good luck finding one of those for under ten times what they're worth.

That is the most I can make out. Aside from the Takanuva set you already mentioned.

Yeah. I'd use the list this anon >>5678454 gave and start by trying to rebuild as many of them as you can. If any of them are complete, you can sell them for more than just the bulk lot.
