Here's what I know.
Hasbro first made the Transformers toys.
These were based on the Machine Robo popularity. Hasbro saw potential in transforming robots and made their own.
They licensed the designs to European toy companies. From here the Japanese made knockoffs of the toys and marketed it as Diaclone. Hasbro also realized how to sell their toys with a cartoon series.
They wanted to sue Takara at first but realized how partnering with a Japanese toy company could be better in the long run. They settled with Takara and that was how Transformers got legit in Japan.

Yeah, I'm going to be going Takara for this one. Hasbro's deco overall I think is superior, and I like their Brawlcone, but Takara's just put more effort into theirs overall. Hasbro's flying brickjet is easily the worst thing in the whole CW Deluxe line, honestly, even if I do like the other molds they used.
